Because of reasons.
Remember, the U.S. army has tried twice now to replace the M4. The only reason we still use it, is because nobody else can or will sell a new rifle to the DOD for the same price that we pay for an M4($250-$500per unit)

You can have a 99% accurate G36 clone in the US. Just buy a SL8, a G36 parts kit, and send it off to somebody who can weld the rear receiver of a G36 onto a SL8. It will cost you though; a fully converted SL8 will run you around $5k in total costs.
I'm currently building one. My second SL8 is going to be a XM8 clone.

No just like the M4 it was build with light weight in mind and just like with the M4 it needs above all a heavier barrel and H&K had already thought of that in the form of the (L)MG36.
My guess is because the US has been looking into different calibers the germans and french have been put off of adressing the issues like the thin barrel or shitty sights of the G36 or the FAMAS necessity for steel casings.

This "problem" was manufactured by the German government. Not only are the test results bogus, but they specifically changed their original contract with HK to use lighter barrels than HK recommended. The rifles the German military has on contract are unique to them.

Also the current defense minister is a cunt that wants to make a move for chancellor. Going after HK for problems that are the MoDs fault to begin with would make it seem as if she did something to clean up the MoDs clusterfuck of a procurement history/process. It's a lot easier to go after a small arms company than it is to go after a giant aerospace and defense contractor. Like if the US went after colt/FN/Beretta for some small fuck up but left Lockheed Martin alone for the F-35 cluster fuck(only the Lockheed part has actually happened)
