Dear Sirs
I today would like to propose to you a new replacement for the typical infantry soldier's main arsenal
As we know, the rifle has been part of the infantryman's core weaponry for centuries now, yet it is my belief that it has become outdated and should be replaced by weaponry that:
A) requires less accuracy
B) has a greater killing range
C) has a greater moral shock
it is my belief that war is heading towards a "war of saturation" where, due to the sheer size and volatility of modern weaponry, the typical breakthrough will be proven impossible
Instead, war will be fought like an iron curtain, where armies will only go as fast as their counter measures, and victory will be based on the sheer amount of saturated fire a nation can bring to bear on his opponent
disintegration by saturation
As such, My aim is to introduce a weapon for infantryman that increases the saturated effect, namely, the grenade launcher.
The American Milkor MGL has an effective combat range of 400 metre, an effective harming range of up to 9 metres, and it's ammunitions can be used for riot control, concealment, and saturate fire. equally, due to it's parabola effect, and arc fire, it can be used to fire directly over the heads of advancing troops, and as mortar support, surrounding the enemy on all sides with damaging shrapnel fire. Not only this, but the psychological effects of concussive force on an infantry soldier has often been indicative of shellshock, so the sheer suppressive rate of the weapon should not only kill the enemy, but potentially paralyse it psychologically as well.
meanwhile, the infantry rifle for the British army, the SA 80, has an effective individual range of 300 metres, has an effective killing range of direct impact, and requires sections to flank to avoid friendly fire due to the bullets direct trajectory.
I would la 12 man section to be comprised of a fire team equipped fully with milkor MGL's, as fire support and with small rapid fire side...

...arm for close quarter combat.
Now I shall go over the issues with the grenade launcher
>ammo capacity and load
I would like to stress that with every early weapon innovation the first weapon has always been rudimental. it is my belief that that, like the maxim gun or aeroplane, the grenade launcher can be developed to become an assault launcher, with increased round capacity and reduced weight as development continues
I would also stress that with development the range of the grenade launchers would also be increased.
please now inform me of any issues surrounding my theory
For cqb use smaller charges. Also I wonder how much 000 buck you could cram into a 40mm shell? Or 40mm fletchets/ tungsten slugs.

Or I can slap an underslung grenade launcher on a M4 and have a combined loaded weight of half that of an empty Milkor. We're also planning on fielding the XM25 CDTE next year.
Suppression with a 40mm, good luck.

There's an existing buckshot 40mm cartridge but it kinda blows, not nearly as good as a regular 12ga shell. Not sure why though, seems like they really underloaded it.
>>28443792
That sucks they under loaded it. I'd love a good 60 pellet burst of 000 buck at my disposal. But I suppose they didn't engineer the 40mm to be a high velocity/pressure cartridge.
The point target effective range of an m4 carbine is 500 meters. The soldier is qualified up to 300m away, but that means they're expected to hit everything in that range atleast 60% of the time (infantry of course are held to higher standards by their first line leaders, and are closer to 90%) past 300, its more likely they miss

No, the future is airbursting grenades with a few XM25s per platoon and every guy currently equipped with a 40mm launcher being equipped with the new 40mm SAGM for dealing with shit closer up. The XM25 is going into service late this year/early next year and the SAGM a couple years after that. The average rifleman's job will move from maneuvering and destroying the enemy to providing suppressing fire so that the soldiers equipped with the XM25 and SAGMs can destroy the enemy. Don't be surprised if 5.56 gets replaced soon with something smaller that would allow the average soldier to carry even more ammo to better fill their new role.

4.7x33 caseless ARs when???

The future of war is getting obliterated from the air and the survivors trying to live in a world with a shattered global economy and rubble for infrastructure and no way to get the food where its grown to the majority of people who live in the cities.

C-can we just have a grenade launcher appreciation thread Instead OP?
N-no? Okay then.....

I'm not too impressed with typical 40mm grenades. There are a lot of design concepts and prototypes that are much better but just not implemented.
Look at the size of the fuse/safety on the one you posted, frigging huge. An electronic fuse would be a fraction of the size and weight.
There's a patent from 1972 on low pressure burning propellant that wouldn't require the heavy case of a hi-low pressure system. It might even allow plastic cases which should work fine since low pressure results in much less heat. By "low pressure" I mean like 3k psi for grenades compared to over 50k psi for rifles.
And muthafuckin bounding grenades. I have a love-hate feel for Russia's grenade launcher design. Some times I think it's rad as hell, sometimes I think it looks godawful to use. But I am really impressed that their VOG-25P seems to get issued fairly regularly. The US has a bounding grenade but from what I can tell it isn't used much.
Anyway enough bitching, I'll post some grenades

40mm grenades use a "high-low" pressure system which lets the barrel be thinner, and lighter. An M203 is basically a mortar you can put under a rifle barrel because of the high-low system.
If it didn't use that system, the barrel would have to be so thick it wouldn't work as an underbarrel system.
A 40mm buckshot load meant for an m203 would probably have to be relatively low pressure.
AGLs are weird
found pics of the buckshot cartridge. M576.
just whipped this into a webm
Armyfag here. You know, the guy who uses this stuff. The buck stops with me etc.
There is so much wrong and retardation in this thread its not even worth going over. The idea of throwing out so many fundamentals and incorporating so many into doctrine is asinine as fuck. Sage, and good day.

I think It's beddy bye time champ.

> the future is airbursting grenades with a few XM25s per platoon
no. have you ever been in the military or been in combat?
>>28447829
thank you for your service.

Why do they have to use such a predictable fabric for the seat? Go with an emerald green on black brocade or something.
