I live in just north of Lancaster City, 5 minutes one way and I'm in the city, 5 minutes in another and you're in the middle of nowhere, I love it.
Where I live there are many options besides BK after 6pm, the city itself isn't giant, but it is definitely a city and not just some crummy little town, we have a baseball team, conference centers, and some gangs but overall it is pretty safe. There are also neat little towns like Lititz and Mount Joy, each is fun to visit.
The food here is the best I've had anywhere on the country due to the close proximity of farms, and you can goto markets or stands on the side of the road for local food. For food, we have everything you talked about. We also have some outlets, a decent mall, and plenty of good ranges and gun shops.
Now that I think about it I wouldn't want to be anywhere else, but if you wanted to look at an area closer to Philly I'd look at King of Prussia.
