My dad thinks handguns are only for shooting people. He's so stubborn about it. How can I convince him that they are worth buying for safety/fun?
>>
>>28425704

tell your dad to grow a pair
>>
>>28425704
Fun is relative and doesn't safety mean shooting people?
>>
>>28425704
You're dad sounds like a big faggot. Tell him to vote for his cuck master Bernie Sanders and stfu
>>
>>28425723
Yeah safety does kind of mean shooting people. But how can I convince him that a handgun is worth buying? If I can do it, he will go in 50/50on a handgun of my choice
>>
>>28425704
You can't. They are for shooting people. Just like a hammer is a tool for driving nails and a saw is a tool for cutting wood, a handgun is a tool for killing men. You own one because you think you may need it and you train with it so that you may be proficient with it when you do but don't ever pretend that it's has as it's purpose anything other than to kill.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>28425740
Well, why is having something that can kill people bad? I would say it isn't, so long as you can prove you are responsible enough to have it.
>>
>>28425737
He's no faggot. Just old in his ways. He's 69. PhD in chemistry. Went to military schools. Grew up hunting and shooting competitively. Used to own many many guns that were all stolen except for his 1100. I don't get it man. He's paranoid like me, we both fear the coming collapse. So why is he being a bitch? He seems like a /k/ommando in every way except for this.

Option 1) Take him to a range and let him rent and try out handguns. Most people that done like them are scared of them.

Option 2) Call him a pretty little girl and give him a pink Walther P22 or a chromed out garter pistol

Option 3) Shoot him with one, and then say "If you only had a handgun..." and then play yackity sax as he bleeds out.

Lol he's owned and shot many handguns. We still have buckets of .45acp in the garage. No 1911 tho :(

Hunting. You can hunt with a handgun. Check local laws. For example in my state there is a limit as to what calibers you can use and you must have a 4" barrel at minimum.

>captcha was 556
>556 is allowed as a "pistol" caliber to hunt with "pistols" in my state

Just settle with a rifle until you become financially independent. Assuming you're a novice, developing marksmanship skills with a rifle is far more important than handgun marksmanship. A rifle is both easier to shoot and more effective at making stuff dead, plus the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship carry over to handguns as well.
>>
>>28425830
>Lol he's owned and shot many handguns. We still have buckets of .45acp in the garage. No 1911 tho :(

Then tell him he has no excuse not to own or shoot a handgun. If he is 69 then I would say get his testosterone checked or have him take DHEA.

No, you're a fag for defending his faggy ideas. Also im guessing youre also a nogunz faggot or underage, since you want him to buy the handgun instead of buying a few yourself then taking him to the range so he can stop being a fag.

>>
>>28425758
Not all handguns are for shooting people. My Ruger MKIII is not designed for shooting people, neither is a competition gun. Neither are scoped .500 S&W magnums (generally). Handguns are used, like all other firearms, for a variety of purposes.

He just sounds like a turbo fudd. My uncle is the same way. Lives in TX, owns about a dozen guns and is a big-time hunter (Has gone hunting at the Bush ranch a couple times) but he thinks handguns are "evil" and only can be used for killing.

Some peoples' opinions cannot be changed. Do what you want.
>>
>>28425943
Over long grip? What's the problem? It fits comfortable
>>
>>28425960
I understand what you're trying to say m8, id defend me dad too but not if he was being a fag. You came to /k/, we fucking love guns, like a lot. You said this person thinks handguns are used only for killing and no one needs them, which is what anti-gunners say about all guns. This is why we (or at least I) think he is being faggy.
>>
>>28426024
I was in a band in high school called turbo fudd.

In all seriousness though, you're right. He's just scared about me I think.
>>
>>28426041
I'm not denying the faggyness of thinking handguns are baby killers. Its lame and he's definitely being a fag about it. I just wanted some advice on how to change mind. I love the guy. I want to be able to shoot with him before he dies.
>>
>>28425967
Way to miss the point. Yes, now that we live in a stable society governed by the rule of law, in which you do not regularly need to take lethal action to protect your life or provide for yourself or your family, handguns - like all weapons - may be used recreationally for sporting purposes. Archery, fencing, and a variety of European and Asian martial arts all utilize deadly weapons for competitive purposes because we have the luxury of playing with our tools instead of the necessity to use them.

I wouldn't use a competition pistol to hunt with or for self-defense, either, but that doesn't mean that guns aren't meant to kill. Quite the contrary, they're still just as deadly, they're just specifically refined to adhere to the files of a particular type of competition.
>>
>>28426030
I'm a skinny skeltor so I tend to gravitate towards really small pocket-pistol style .380s; I'd love a double stack 9mm but for CC's sake an 8-round 9x18 Makarov wins out
>>
>>28426073
I know that feel bro, my dad used to be turbo fudd/borderline anti a few years back. The only guns in the house where a model 10 s&w that belonged to his father and a .30-30 lever gun he shot maybe twice a year while hunting. Once i was old enough to buy guns i kept buying and buying and everytime i came home with a new one hed say the same thing, "why do you need that one" or "you dont need anymore than that". What i ended up doing was taking him with me every time i went to the range. Few months of that and now he has his own collection of sigs, 1911s, and glocks. Even bought an AR after we magdumped a few times and he had a huge smile on his face the entire time. Fugg If you where in Tx id invite you and your dad to come shoot some handguns, maybe he'd see how fun they are.
>>
>>28426210
I really don't see how that affects that they weren't designed for killing. What is the point, that firearms can kill, and are good at it? I never said they weren't. We're in the context of a peaceful society, and we're talking about buying a handgun for purposes that may not include killing others. It's a relevant point.
>>
>>28426247
Ah gotcha. I have monster hands. I need a full.
>>
>>28426313
If I ever find a model of CZ that fits a Makarov profile and doesn't look like a Glock reject I'll die and go to heaven
>>
>>28426249
Thanks bro. That means a lot. I'm gonna take him to the range as soon as possible. He used to be so into guns. He would really like to get back into it. He needs a rekindling
>>
>>28425960
Have him help you buy an AR.

The pistol will come soon afterword. Especially if he is just performing a standard integrity/maturity check.

He might just want to make sure you aren't going to act like an idiot before admitting that he is thinking of getting a handgun or before helping you get one.
>>
>>28425704
tbqh handguns are for shooting people, sure some of them have been perverted into other "purposes" but no, your dad is correct.

So what happened that made him change his mind? I know you mentioned most of his guns where stolen, care to share the story?
>>
>>28425704

Your dad is not wrong.

Instead of convincing him that they're not for shooting people, try to convince him that sometimes people deserve to get shot.

or

You can point out that not all guns fire bullets and that some people have successfully used their guns as less-lethal weapons or as deterrents without ever firing a shot.

But if your dad is being stubborn for stubborn's sake, I don't think there's much to be done about that.
>>
>>28425704
maybe you are the stubborn one OP, show your father more respect, by simple experience alone he is naturally wiser than you.
>>
>>28426391

Not much to tell. Having kids probably changed his mind too.

> living in Cincinnasti
> some nigger kids stole like 11 guns
> all the guns were chained together
> rolled the guns up in carpet and took em
> dumb kid didn't see the Remington 1100 12 ga. Leaning against the wall

That Remington was my dad's first gun he bought for himself when he was 16. It has a pretty low serial number. Still have it and it's beautiful.

A) the police in the US is ridiculously ineffective.

B) not having an effective weapon means the person with more muscles and training at beating people to death.. will be able to freely beat people to death.
A gun creates the opportunity for normal educated person, not spending his/her days beating people to death for fun, to have a fair chance of survival on such an encounter.

C) The police usually arrives after a crime has happened, not when it happens, and the uniform does not mean they are better people than the average Joe.
Many in the police force are great and are doing the Job because it involves helping people, but others might have mainly been interested in a profession because it might involve killing humans.

You, like most gun owners, only want a firearm to protect yourself and your loved ones from harm, not to harm someone.
And considering that there are so many guns out there in the US, not knowing how to use them properly is a severe lack of general knowledge.
A semi-auto pistol, revolver, shotgun, bolt action, and AR type should be something a person living in the US should at-least be familiar with, it's like riding an elevator, making coffee or knowing how to use public transport. .. you might not plan to do so, but if you have to, being completely clueless will be much more problematic than it is with the other things mentioned.

No. A firearm is a tool. It's designed to control an explosion which slings a projectile forward.

Intent is another discussion. For the record, it doesn't matter what the designer intended.
