Trivia time.

That harness was originally constructed with more lames in the skirt, shorter tassets, and fully enclosing cuisses, following what's seen in the English effigies it was based on.

The original owner had it modified after his first jousting session. The changes to the skirt and tassets makes it easier to sit in the saddle (possibly eliminating a bit of a gap, or a spot where a gap could pop up as you move around), without affecting protection on foot to any real degree. It's also a change that happened to English armour in the years following when the effigies used here where made, as the knights of the time noticed the same issues, so it simply changes the dating a bit.

The enclosing cuisses made it harder to ride, as contact with the horse was greatly diminished, but provide useful protection when on foot. So here we see the harness being changed away from the primarily infantry configuration that the English usually went for, to a more cavalry-optimised one to fit with the almost purely mounted use the owner put it through.

As few men-at-arms where as infantry-focused as the English, enclosing cuisses are relatively rare elsewhere in Europe.

Now does anyone know of any book that even approaches Capwell's, for the same (or so period), but for German armour instead? Not that it's an issue of it covers Italian and Flemish and so on as well.
