I'm thinking about buying a Colt Police Positive .38 S&W for $350 as an open-carry piece for when I'm dressed nicely. I like old guns and I don't own a Colt, so it appealed to me for those reasons. I might redo the rubber grips with walnut or whatever wood I find with the prettiest grain.
Can I do better for $350-ish delivered?

Should be something pale, like some variety of spruce.

Damn. Bud's had some as well last I checked, they may have been grabbed up though

Is there a guide on this? I tend to wear dark brown leather so I thought I'd get the grips to match, maybe find a nice marbled walnut or something.

Only guide I've really been able to find is this one:

Do you get the pale wood recommendation from personal experience? If so, what region? Using a soft wood seems odd, I'd think maple or birch might be a better choice.

Don't really know any, just a rule of thumb that it should be classy.
Only seen two barbecue guns, both of them ivory. One old as hell, the other still in that "Looks like shit" phase. It's just not something a lot of people do these days.

That's a damned shame, if you ask me. In my circle of friends, we've been classing up our carry pieces as we tend to only OC in public when dressed sharply, but there's no BBQ gun culture here in Pennsylvania to which I've been exposed.

What's this then?

I'd personally find a nice S&W model 10 if you're looking specifically for something in the .357 diameter range, but if you're looking for a nice colt, I'd look for a New Service .45.
