why? I simply mean if anything were to ever happen, a glock would be the easiest to find parts/spare mags/etc for and it would be wise to be comfortable shooting and working on them

Most of that also applies to M&Ps and other stiker fired guns. Glocks are great guns. But glock fanboys piss me off. I will agree with you that everyone should own a full size polymer striker fired gun. One from a reputable company that is. and in a common caliber like OP said

I think they're pretty nice. I thought the 226 had a really fat grip, I wasn't a fan. Someone told me the legion line has a thinner one so I'm going to check it out. If not maybe the 229 will feel better.
I can't hate on the shield, its a solid carry gun. One of the best compact options imo
