The KAI FA-50 is more than capable of holding its own against slav shit and monkey models in the region while being fairly affordable. It has a modern Elta radar, BVR capability and is supersonic.
I would put it on par with MLU F-16s in terms of capability.

The key with the FA-50 is that it's a joint Lockheed Martin/KAI design, they've had decades to analyze and modify a design in the twilight of the 4th generation to give something simple in a small package. It has all the electronics, weaponry, HUD, FBW systems of a contemporary fighter shrunk down a very small aircraft. Calling it a monkey model misses the point of the aircraft. It's definitely one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the region BUT it isn't necessarily the best. In terms of capability its probably closer to an F-16C/D, more advanced but simply lacking the raw power. The FA-50 can pull some serious Gs but it's control surfaces and engine are its limiting factor. It's possible to mount the F414 instead of the F404 engine which would help it a lot, the wizzo is also kind of redundant too.
It's a shame the FA-50 never got the AESA radar it was originally planned to mount.
A fleet of less advanced aircraft that the Philippines can afford to maintain is going to be more useful than top of the line jets that they can't afford to keep flying.
