I am looking to add a pump shotgun to the collection and all my research has shown me is that for some reason people don't like new Remington shotguns. What is the best pump shotgun for the money? It doesn't have to be the best shotgun ever made, just the best quality at a low price point.
>>
>>28406374
Mossberg 500

Winchester 1200

Old Remington, or a Remington Police
>>
>>28406431
So is the maverick 88 a no go?
>>
>>28406374
Ithaca 37.
>>
>>28406479
It's fine, just doesn't have as long of a warranty as the 500. Foreign parts too, but I'm not debating that tonight.

Pretty much anything that guy said on his list, plus used good ones too (i.e. ithaca 37, old stevens, old sears guns)
>>
>>28406374
Got a maverick 88 it shoots burty gud but for some reason when I'm shooting 3 inch hot loads my slide and bolt comes out of battery when I fire
>>
>>28406479
The maverick doesn't have the top mounted safety. The Mossberg 500 setup makes it easy to use for both right and left handers.
>>
>>28406513
I am new to shotguns but I want a cheep one to start. Am I best off going for a new cheap one online or hit up the local gun shops and buy something used?
>>
>>28406579
You can probably find a better deal with the latter, but it'll only pay off if you research what to look for first. Always inspect a used firearm, check for alterations, corrosion, and broken parts at a minimum. Also, never settle for a shitty item when a decent one is only a couple bucks more.

When you're searching for used items, try to be flexible with your price and firm with your standards
>>
>>28406579
Hit up an lgs or a pawn shop. A good pump shotgun with some wear can be had for 350 or less. I've seen NIB Hawk/Pardner shotguns for less than 250.
>>
>>28406431
Fact. If you can get your hands on an old Remington for a good price, especially a police, it wins hands down. If you can't, get a used Mossberg 500.
>>
>>28406655
A gunshop near me (Kittery Trading Post in southern Maine) has a used Mossberg 500 in the 250 range and says its condition is 95% (which is good i guess?) I might go there and check out what they got because they are pretty huge.
>>
I got a mav 88
It shoots well but the slide is a bit fragile.
>>
>>28406678
The percentage is the amount of finish left on the gun.
>>
>>28406709
Oh that makes sense. Will probably check it out tomorrow. Is there any big difference between the 500 and the 590?
>>
>>28406785
590 has an aluminum trigger group and usually a shorter (18.5" or 20") and heavier barrel.
>>
>>28406785
Also, you might look for the two barrel package if you go with the 500. For $325 to $350, you can get a standard tube 500 with an 18.5" and 26"or 28" barrel.

Not endorsing this vendor, but as an example:
http://www.gunbuyer.com/p-17059-mossberg-500-combos-12ga-28-barrel-vr-185-barrel-barrel-wood-blued.aspx
>>
>>28407199
Bitchin, that actually sounds like a sweet deal. I am not interested in hunting or anything so idk how much use the longer barrels are.
>>
>>28407380
If you ever shoot clays, a longer barrel means a longer sight plane, which is desirable.

Keep in mind, the standard magazine tube (4 round and closed on the end) cannot use an extension. There are also two types of barrels used by Mossberg, on that has a nut attached and another that has a ring. The ring type fits over the tube instead of screwing in it.
>>
>>28407529
Oh I didn't think of this. To be honest I think I'll just buy a cheap used shotgun and if I like it allot then I will invest in a higher end one to pimp out.
>>
>>28406374
I bought a brand new Mossberg 500 for $225 from Cabela's a couple years back. It was a "Turkey Thug" model and will take 2.75" and 3" shells. Came with an over-full choke and I got them to throw in a modified choke for free. I removed the pointless rear tabletop sight and have used it for hunting dove, squirrel, rabbit, and some casual skeet shooting with my buddies. It has never malfunctioned and tears down VERY easily for cleaning/maintenance. I can't recommend it enough.
>>
>>28407380
When I was younger I was lured in by the sexy "tactical" 590. Looking back, save the money and get a 500. Cheaper, no worse, easier to find accessories since you don't have to worry about the fatter barrel. If you really want a shorter barrel and the 590 is somehow cheaper in your area (it isn't, you're just not looking if you think it is) then go for it. I love mine but I wouldn't recommend it over the plain 500.
>>
>>28406374
Mossberg 500

you have to try hard to kill those guns, and even then it doesnt work

Rem 870 Wing
Rem 870 Police

Mossberg 500 combo from big 5 sporting goods

>>

Benelli Nova. I picked mine up for just under $400. Not sure why no one ever mentions them.
>>
Well as I'd it hadn't been said enough already, mossberg. I bought the 500 and I love it. The mossberg 590a1, however, is the only milspec rated shotgun in the USA, making it one tough mofo.
>>
>>28416358
Because there are American shotguns at the same price point most likely. The Nova does sound like a good option though

too spacey and plastic for some people. and as much as i love my superdupernova, the aftermarket is garbage.
>>
>>28416412
True, but I tend to not add much aftermarket stuff to my firearms so that doesn't really bother me.
>>
>>28416358
Because the polymer frame. They are wonderful field guns, especially for waterfowl, but they don't hold up to hundreds of rounds a day, day after day, which isn't unheard of in clays.

They also have a odd moment of inertia due to their balance.
>>
>>28416403
Try and stop me faggot
>>
you can buy a hawk 982 (remington 870 clone, better than current 870 express) for like $180 brand new with a lifetime retailer warranty
>>
>>28416583
I wouldn't use a $400 shotgun if I was that hard into clays.
>>
>>28416639
Neither would I, but it is more common than common sense would allow.

That said, I have trashed a couple Mossbergs shooting clays, as well as one 870 Express. I would practice with low end pumps and shoot a Wingmaster or 105 CTi II for score, depending on the game.
>>
>>28416734
I've shot clays with it but mostly just with some friends and nothing really serious. If I was to get serious I would buy a much better shotgun.
>>
>>28406639
This. Seriously, if you want a good old pump action check your LGS's, you'll find something. Everytime I walk into Michigun (get it?) or any store the walls are lined with them.
>>
>>28406537

That's because you have shit form. The trigger releases the slide when pulled, and your candy ass is reacting to the increased recoil by letting the slide arm go when the gun jumps.

>You pull the trigger
>Slide releases, round goes boom
>Gun pushes backward into your body
>Your body is in turn pushes backward
>This momentum pushes the slide out of battery

I see this a lot with guys who only really prove with light target loads. The Maverick is also a really fucking light shotgun which doesn't help the recoil either.

Pull it tighter into your shoulder.
>>
>>28418814
*practice, not prove
>>
>>28406374
Moss 500
>cheap
>reliable
>customizeable
>can beat the fucking bag outta it.
>>
>>28406537
Try to fire a 3" while holding onto the receiver instead of the slide. If it is your form, like the guy above suggested, you won't have a problem and just need to train past it. If it still does it with your hand off the slide, it is probably the carrier that the bolt rides in or the lug.

Posting my Mossberg 500 with a warning.

Are you looking to do tactical shit with it? Fancy shell changeovers with a full tube? The 500's can do it, but not as good as 870's can.
>>
My Escort 20 ga is pretty kickass. Not a bad price either. About $200-350.
>>
>>28420917
Honestly I am not really looking for tacticool accessories. Just a simple first pump shotgun. If I find a nice old 870 I'm actually ok with wood
>>
>>28421361

In that case, ignore me.

I received my 500 as a gift, and I was kind of cold to the idea of a shotgun. Now that I've learned some shit, I love the thing.
>>
>>28421396
I am open to synthetic. But the whole idea is that if I like this shotgun then u want to get a KSG and a VEPR 12 later down the line where ch both are pretty tacticool

OP, get a mossberg 500, 590, or 590a1. Its the best new pump gun on the market.

/k/ doesn't like the remington 870 because remington is part of the freedomgroup that is less pro-gun than ruger. Also they've been having terrible quality control issues and poor fit/finish causing surface rust. Also their extractor design is shit.

The Stevens and pardner pump chinese copies are alright for the price, but not as good as the American made originals.

Anyone have any experience using benellis apparently least expensive model, the nova pump field?
http://www.benelliusa.com/nova-pump-field-shotgun
I've been looking into shotguns recently and came across it and was curious. Coming from benelli I feel like it might be at least somewhat worth considering.
>>
>>28421789

hold it before you buy it, some people just can't get around the ergos of the (super)nova. otherwise it's a solid piece, its a bit on the bigger side, and the nova doesn't have the comfortech stock so it's a bit stiffer.
>>
>>28406479
Is good, I have one for HD
>>
>>28406374
Norinco Hawk pump. Search on slickguns, don't pay more than 200.
>>
>>28421876
"Hold it before you buy it" something everyone should consider solid advice. It's a personal standard for me butbglad to hear it all the same. For guns where people find it worth saying it certainly says a lot.
>>
>>28419497
It would still do it if he's not holding the gun right to his body.

The slight amount of movement back into the shoulder once the slide is released is totally enough to put the gun out of battery.

The recoil from a 3.5" shell fired one handed shouldn't take a Mossberg 500 derived action out of battery, as in pic relader, let alone a 3" shell doing it.

Either he is flinching or jerking like you suggested or his bolt or carrier needs serviced.
>>
>>28423433
Take a shotgun with the slide released (pull the trigger, hit the button, whatever) and hit the butt fairly hard against something ~1/4" away.

It won't be enough to cycle the gun or anything but it'll take the gun out of battery.

It's the short trip backward followed by the abrupt stop.
