The Soviet partisans are depicted as untrained rabble who are never present when actually needed and have to rely on child soldiers. When the lead is shown entering the forest with them, at long last obtaining the goal he's wanted since the beginning, he's depicted as vanishing among a sea of nameless faces, likely to die an ignoble death. The Japanese were terrible to everyone during the war. They didn't adhere to any of the accords on combatants, POWs or legal war. They executed prisoners, experimented on prisoners, used prisoners for slave labor and just about everything between.
The reason we have international law about what constitutes war crime is to prevent an aggressor from genociding a loser after they performed terrible acts. Japan acted without remorse and is extremely lucky the US didn't put their entire population in internment camps and salt their earth after the war.
