It's also suprisingly complicated and hard to maintain. The Ma Deuce was a good HMG seventy years ago, but it's mostly carried on now through institutional inertia. As far as HMGs go, I'd take a DShK over it any day.

I've had plenty of problems with the m249 and Mk 19 as well. The 240 however, has been just fine for me.

Not the guy you are responding to but there are some clapped out M2s out there. I remember being issued one with wood grips and made by AC Spark Plugs back in WWII, and it was the nastiest MG I ever came across, and refused to shoot without a light coating of LSA and anything more then 5 cans or so and it would just slower and slower until it became a single shot/live fire malfunction drill marathon.
There are probably some reliable M2s out there but Iraq lasted 12 years and AF is still going on, there are garbage MGs every that have been getting scrubbed by 19 year olds with steel bore brushes for a decade in daily service.
