Egypt gets the ships and uses it to for various military actions in the Middle East with Saudi Arabia.
The Egyptians are free to use whatever helo they want, their money (read Saudi Arabia).
If France sent the ships to Russia, that'll be a fuck you.
Instead, Russia got a refund and France managed to find another buyer. Everyone saves face. Russia is using the technology and skills they did get out of the sale and build to try and put their own LHD next decade.

Ehhhh, Egypt has never been a particularly large buyer of American weapons. Sure they have Abrams and F-16s but the vast majority of their inventory is still Russian and/or European.
