The Blackknight Transformer will be the first military aircraft in a long time that enlisted personnel will be allowed to fly. Its similar to the mall toys called quadrotors.

I wonder why that is.

http://www.popularmechanics.com/military/a12968/the-real-life-transforming-army-helicopter-16883148/
>>
The Black Knight has eight boxer-configuration four-cylinder gasoline engines with seven-foot, two-blade rotors that connect to the body of the helo via A-arms. The engines drive the rotors directly, with no conventional helicopter transmission, swash plate, or tail rotor. To remain stable, Black Knight uses differential thrust between opposing sets of prop-rotors controlled through Advanced Tactics' proprietary stability control software.

"It takes away the mechanical complexity of a helicopter and moves that complexity into the software," Jehangir says. "All the stability and control is done via high-speed computerized feedback."

The engine-rotor combos connect to a boxy fuselage on wheels, which houses a gasoline-powered automotive drivetrain complete with transmission, steering, and brakes. When the Black Knight transforms into drive mode, its engines and rotors fold up against the fuselage to yield an 8.5-foot-wide ground vehicle. Interior cargo volume is on par with the Army's UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. And, Jehangir says, "you could fit at least three or four of these under the rotor diameter of a Black Hawk."

>The Blackknight Transformer will be the first military aircraft in a long time that enlisted personnel will be allowed to fly.

You'll have to be a warrant officer at least, Same as helicopters.

The army has no reason to just start handing out expensive new tech to semi-literate idiots.
>>
>>28390558
please tell me this is just an early concept vehicle prototype. because that thing looks ridiculous as it is now.
>>
>>28390595
Its CASEVAC, it doesn't need to move quickly or have armor. It drives like a truck to and from secure sites back to whatever FOB it is based out of.
>>
What powers the drive wheels? A 9th gas engine? A whole separate electric setup?

That thing has to be slow as fuck.

It looks like something I would make in Besiege.

That's market speak for "its cheap as fuck". It is used after security is established. It means you aren't wasting UH-60s that could be used for more important things if you need a dead/dying/critical Talib or friendly out of there.

....What If
I just bought more blackhawks?
theyve been making them for a while, eventually they get cheaper, right?
>>
>>28390558
Isn't this mostly going to be used to free up logistical tasks the airforce should otherwise take care of?

Moving supplies from and to locations when they are classed as non-critical situations.

So its like a big fucking box they attached trailer wheels to and put roters on top because look we can fly. This is fucking stupid. Looks like some guy just wanted a big quadcopter.

That undercuts the mall toy above and doesn't require the time/efforts of a warrant or commissioned officer to pilot it? Not happening.

The Black Knight is great because its an unmanned gurney (when flying) that can be driven down the street by an 88M or 3531. And it costs WAAAAAy less.

Seems neat but I have no idea what they're trying to use it for.

>Casevac?
Judging from the size and description it holds just as many litter patients as an FLA but with decreased off road capability. Yes it can fly but what are you flying to? Not from a patrol to the fob because this thing looks like it'd crumple from a pothole let alone fire. FOB/COP to base/airfield? Maybe if you're close enough, but that isn't the case often times.

I feel like this would be good for ferrying supplies and personnel between adjacent FOBs and COPs. Anything else and you're limited by space, weight and range.

Imagine you got your shit fucked up and you are laying on your back.. Your buddies telling you that you are going to be okay. And then you hear this mall toy buzzing above your head. Your buddies lay you inside along with a dead Talib and you feel the structure flex under your weight. Since its unmanned, you'll be the only one riding along.

So you get to hear that horrific whir for the next 10 minutes and hope to fuck the adversary doesn't notice your fucking loud Kneenex box hovering 100 feet off the ground.

You need distributed propulsion to really benefit from the reduced mechanical complexity of multirotors.
