It may have started life as a M96 manufactured in 1917, but it has obviously been shortened to carbine length. Almost all like this were modified by the Swedish military in 1938. It is now an M/1938 Short Rifle.

Brake cleaner for metal and paper towel for wood.

take down the bolt and magazine/trigger guard assembly and let them soak in mineral spirits. use a tooth brush to scrub off the harder-to-get cosmoline. if the barrel/receiver has cosmoline in it, 2.5"-3" diameter PVC pipe and glue an end cap on one end. pour mineral spirits into that tube and let the barrel/receiver soak for a good hour or 2. After that, rinse everything down with hot water and blow the water off with an air compressor. For really concentrated cleaning (bolt parts and chamber) I used brake cleaner and a 20ga copper bore brush. For the stock, leave it out on the sun and just use shop rags/paper towel.

I third this. It's weird to say, but I would feel much more comfortable going into combat with it than any modern rifle I've handled. It just feels good in the hand, like in very deep, primitive sort of sense.

When I open my safe to admire my guns, the one I pull out the most is my nugget. I have more expensive guns of better quality that are new enough to be my nugget's great-grandchildren, but I just keep going back to my nugget.
