Why do military rifles have sights so fucking far away from the bore? What's wrong with just using a leaf sight on a smooth barrel?

Also rifle looks actually pretty decent for a bullpup, what's the price supposed to be? If under $2k I would be tempted to get one and put a drum on it
>>
>>28381568
The L85A2 sits pretty low when you hold it, the sights are pretty close to where the majority of users head's will be when aiming down sights.
>>
>>28381503
Take away all the memes and jokes of the rifle, it is without a doubt one of if not the best current issued IW in NATO.
>>
>>28381503
Unreliable and took Germans to make it function acceptably.
>>
>>28381503
but how do i get one in the us?
>>
>>28381503
It's okay on trash but if a skrake or FP shows up you better pull out an AK or SCAR to burst them down
>>
>>28382554
You don't. only a few where imported as samples and besides that none are sold commercially. Its okay though just buy an Aug or a Tavor, they both function better anyways.
>>
>>28382593
>function better anyways

And this is coming from the person who's used all three actively?
>>
>>28382662
Obviously. This is /k/. Do you think anyone posts incorrect information without first hand experience?

>>28381503
Sounds like a new fag with a hard on for Elle.

Do yourself a faver bro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3q6inq5eGU
and buy an Tavor ($1750), Steyr AUG A3 ($1800), or heck even a Kel Tec RDB ($1545 its not out yet >_<) before you buy yourself a stovepipe L85
>>

A good rifle by the accounts of those who use it. I want one.

>using the AK12
Save your dosh and jump directly to the SCAR.
>>
>>28385453
Well I know it's because BAE doesn't export them, but I am curious as to their reasoning behind that decision.

I can't imagine there is any secret britbong technology used in them
>>
>>28381503
It's one sexual looking gun. Although the newer variants are even better looking.
>>
>>28385497
Because they're machine guns, almost every first world country except Switzerland bans machine guns for civilian ownership.
>>
>>28381503

I can't speak for all rifles, but I can speak for the ar15.
This also isn't the best picture
Look at these two rifles
Ar15 "military style rifle"
Ruger 10/22 "safe rifle that doesn't kill babies"
On the ar15, the stock and receiver are in line, like on the l85 in ops pic, but the optic (and although they're folded down, the irons) stand tall.

On the ruger, the receiver is above the stock, but the irons are close to bore.

The reason why this happens is how your face is set up. Your eyes are above your cheeks. Your cheek connects to the stock, making a cheekweld, since your eyes sit above your cheeks, your optics must sit above the stock.
>>
>>28385516
So they don't want to go to the trouble of making a semi auto civilian legal variant?

Given how much demand for semi auto sporting rifles there is in the USA right now seems like it would be a sure way to make money, especially if they partnered with someone like Century who would handle the logistics of importing
>>
>>28385581
Interesting, thanks. Only semi rifles I have are a Mini-14 and 10/22, rest are lever actions + a Model 70 for deer

Is there any mechanical feature that mandates this, or is it supposed to be better ergonomically?
>>
>>28385618
Supposedly so, considering that only soviets seemed to ignore cheek wield and instead made their stocks at an angle. And now Russians like to slap aftermarket cheek pad on it anyway.
>>
>>28385592
Most military style rifles were banned in 1989 by George W. Bush. And Clinton strengthened the ban in 1998.
>>
>>28385659
The fuck are you talking about.....
>>
>>28385689
You obviously don't live in the U.S. I meant Bush and Clinton banned military style rifles from import.
>>
>>28385698
Then why do I see fuckloads of them on Atlantic Firearms?
>>
>>28385698
Than why not an arrangement where, say, Century buys everything except the barrel and receiver, builds a receiver + buys a barrel from Green Mtn + puts on enough furniture to meet reqs, and sells it?
>>
>>28385717
That's because these guns are also partially made in the U.S.

They're brought in as "sporters" and they're converted with the required amount of american made parts to satisfy 922(r). Not only that, there's like 50 guns banned by name that cannot be imported just because of their name.
>>
>>28385755
They could, but AFAIK there are no L85 part kits. and knowing how bongland is they won't allow there to be any part kits.
>>
>>28385780
I wonder if we could track down someone working in the factory, and pay them to put together some parts kits and ship over?

I imagine it would be a risk on their side, but not ours provided the parts kits are 922 compliant
>>
When I was doing security on a pier a royal marine had one, I asked about it and he just took the Mag out and cleared it handed it to me. He said its more accurate than the m4 but it's harder to control. He said shooting the m4 was nothing and he liked how easy it was to take down and clean. Idk but I thought it was a solid rifle heavier than a m4 but I think it's about the vanity of not having one that intrigues people.

On ar15s, its because the buffer tube needs to be inline with the bolt carrier group, which needs to be in line with the chamber and barrel, so go ahead and make the whole damn thing level
>inb4 ares scr. That shit wasn't around in the 60's
For most bolt guns, I dunno. That height over bore is only an issue at close range when dealing with cover and obstacles as far as I am aware.
>>28385645
Russians aren't the only ones. H&K g3 and variants have stocks lower than the receiver
I think fals do too.
>>
>>28386018
If no barrel it had better be close to $500

I bet we could design an 80% receiver, get it formed, and assemble ourselves

Barrel would be super easy, just get profile and send it out
>>
is that a famas
>>
>>28381503
A better HK gun than the G36.
>>
>>28381503
Heavy, inaccurate and all round unfunctional.
You know it how it got a button safety?
>Be 70's
>Gun is more or less finished in design sense
>Scientist shows Colonel in charge
>Colonel says button safety is better
>Scientists change design
>New Colonel takes over
>Design remains

That gun is a pig and I'm fucking sick of the safety always falling off.

You talk an awful lot of shit.

the whole front sight above the bore came out of ww2 experience, if you do a mag dump you heat the barrel and the heat can cause mirage waves obscuring the front site and since the front site is more important than the rear site needed to raise it to clear potential heat mirage. also makes for cooler looking rifles and we all know how important that is :)

Prexis Parts Kit.jpg

>>28382554
Prexis sold a few uppers with unfinished lowers a few years ago. They somehow got a hold of about 100 l85 cadet rifle uppers. You needed a gunsmith to install the barrel, bend and punch the lower, and basically assemble the rifle with the appropriate licenses.

Pic related is a semi-finished Prexis parts kit. They were super expensive, and collectors basically bought them up before a casual buyer could get in edge-wise.

>>28381503
Love it, it's a great weapon to use and really works well in horrible conditions, yes I've used it.
>>
>>28390654
Damn. Was it possible to create a facsimile with the appropriate parts? Your rifle looks super close to being "there". What would it take to finish it to make it a clone? Looks like charging handle, mag well, BE Meyers flash hider and a DD rail system to complete the look?

>none of the parts were org l85.

Were they air-soft replicas? What parts? Hand guards and stuff?
>>
The A2 is about as good as a small arm is going to get at this point. The Brits designed it, the Germans fixed it. Works fine in all combat situations. Accurate, handy. Not particularly light or well balanced, but that doesn't turn it in to a bad weapon.
>>
>>28381503

the handguards, trigger, front sight, plastics are all airsoft.

Thats what I hoped to do but the machining was so shoddy (possibly unsafe) that I didn't think I could salvage it.

I still plan on building one starting from scratch and an airshit l85 oneday
>>
>>28390760
The only gripe I can see being legit is the placement of the safety. Other than that, it's a battle proven bull pup ar-18. The A2 upgrades from HK seemed to have worked really well, and the modernization with the Daniel Defense rail system and Elcan Spectre or Trijicon ACOG optics to replace the SUSAT sight make it fully modern.

>>28390654
By the way, slick AUG.
