they went to have the marines test them, they're mostly worried about interface issues at this point. Marines were literally too dumb.

mules/donkey/horses are expensive.

they have to be trained, they need a handler trained, caretakers, grazing land, feed, water, medical care.

they can still be difficult to work with when trained. they don't do airborne/air assault/amphibious operations. they make a sanitation problem.

a robot is a lot simpler for soldiers in the field. it either works or it doesn't. it doesn't get spooked by loud noises. it follows commands. you can tell it to go home and it will. robot doesn't care if you toss it out of an airplane, helicopter, or a boat. robot doesn't poop and piss all over the bivouac site. when it isn't in use. You can just put the robot in a connex.

Everybody associated with this project fooled themselves into thinking they could make a whisper-quiet load-bearing robot with the ability to withstand the rigors of a combat patrol.

I applaud the ingenuity of the folks at Boston Dynamics, but they took a very simple problem -- lightening a soldier's load -- and developed a needlessly complex and costly solution to it.

The money spent on that robot could have gone toward developing featherweight Level IV plates and some kind of laser rifle that takes lightweight rechargeable batteries.

>>28383854

>60 pounds of bullshit you have to carry

That's also a problem, but there are ways to lighten that load.

Tell other engineers to figure out a way to do just that with the millions of dollars that DARPA gave Boston Dynamics, and you'll get a solution that would be far better than a four-legged robot operating by way of an internal combustion engine.

>>28383634
PU-238 ain't that expensive.
Heat is how it produces its power

>The power density of polonium is unique and made it attractive as a power source. One pound of polonium-210 occupies a volume of approximately 3 cubic inches and produces heat at the rate of 3.6 x 108 British Thermal Units (BTUs) per minute or about 64 kilowatts of electric power. With a thermal energy output of 120 watts per g, polonium-210 was selected initially for use in the RTG.

This would work
You would have a new po210 "battery" to swap in every 30-60 days or whatever, when the old one is running low.

>I carried some shit in the sandbox!

Join the club, kid.

Stop thinking like a grunt and start thinking like a problem-solver.

You have to carry three classes of items on a patrol: armament (weapons, ammo, armor), sustainment (food, water, clothing, medical), and mission-centric (commo, GPS, optics).

Some of these classes can be lightened by way of engineering.

I'll bet you the price of DARPA's Big Dog contract that we could reduce the weight of the armament and mission-centric item classes by at least 70%.

All the tech is in place and in use.

Small insectoid robots that can autonomously and stealthily hunt both soft and hard targets would be fucking scary.
Doubly so if they can go into hibernation and attack when detection is imminent.
