JF-17. Chinese fighter developed for export. I doubt there's any original MiG-21 parts still on it, but it started out as a MiG-21.

Redesign to have a bubble canopy. Thrown in modern avionics and flight controls, HOTAS, modern radar, a modern turbofan engine possibly with thrust vectoring to compensate for its Cold War tier manuverability, and to top it all off add some modern missiles.

Boom, it's got another 35ish years on it.

They actually tried to make a new version based on picrelated, but ended up with so little left of the original plane, they said fuck it and made a whole new one altogeter (MiG-23).

I never said otherwise. Picrelated is what they ended up with. All that were left of the original MiG-21 were vertical stabilizer and some parts of tail section, everything else was made from scratch. This made little sense, so they dropped it and went with the variable wing geometry that was the hottest shit back then.

The real driving idea behind the MiG-23 was shorter takeoff and landing rolls. They looked at two concepts for it, one with swing-wings (the ultimate production version) and one with lift-jets.

Never seen your pic before. Any designation or sources for it?
>>
>>28389946
Nigger the point is that they would have literally had to replace everything in the cockpit. Everything. You think the the original MiG-21bis had CCRP? Twat.

Dude, that's the fucking point. They had to rip the avionics out of every jet and change it in a massively expensive project for limited gain. The point being that it would probably have been easier and more worthwhile to invest in another aircraft than use the same old airframes.

>Dude, that's the fucking point. They had to rip the avionics out of every jet and change it in a massively expensive project for limited gain. The point being that it would probably have been easier and more worthwhile to invest in another aircraft than use the same old airframes.

This argument is fucking retarded becuase almost every fucking airframe in every service has served through multiple massive avionic upgrades. You have any fucking clue how long the F-15 has been service? Or how long it's planned to STAY in service?

The real issue is that the plane is a pile of fucking shit, and for reasons that have fuck-all to do with avionics. There's no ROOM to put in half the modern avionics they'd like to. If the airframe still had potential, maybe, but the Fishbed is a pile of shit and always WAS a pile of shit. THAT'S the fucking problem; new avionics is just polishing the turd.
>>
>>28390433
I Gotta agree with this. Modern aerodynamics call for highly unstable wings so that the plane is very manoeuvrable. Easier to start with a new plane.
>>
>>28390433
Again, THAT'S. THE. FUCKING. POINT. They had the money to do this shit to a MiG-21. I am trying to say that to do these kinds mom modifications is pointless. Using the F-15 as an example is moot because it is a massively capable jet fighter that performs multiple roles and is still world class. The mig on the he other hand was obsolete in the 70's. If you weren't so fucking thick you would realise that that is what I am trying to say. You fucking stupid cunt.

>>
>>28390753
You know I never thought People this stupid existed but you are acting like the capability to do these things and the changes required to use them are simply bolt on. Also going from a simple AtA radar to PGM capability is massive for such a simple and obsolete fighter
>>

>i'm putting words in your mouth because I implied 80s era avionics are as hard and costly to install as 20XX era avionics

sorry I meant "twat"
>>
>>28390864
Actually that pod and the associated avionics required to use it properly are 20xx. If you knew about the lightening pod you would know that. You are continuing to be a twat by comparing it in the same light as a legacy system like Pave TACK or Pave KNIFE. Twat.
>>
>>28390262
>The real driving idea behind the MiG-23 was shorter takeoff and landing rolls.
That has a lot to do with takeoff/landing speeds and I remember reading somewhere that the new wing on MiG-21I reduced that quite drastically. Though I kinda agree that variable wing geometry was a better choice at the time.

>Never seen your pic before. Any designation or sources for it?
Picture looks like a scan from some book. I got it here: http://www.testpilot.ru/russia/mikoyan/mig/21/lsh/mig21lsh.htm
The plane was designated as "27-11". It was never built, only blueprints and scale models were made. Doesn't seem like there's much more information about it anywhere.
>>
>>28390764
Because the radar that uses 98% alcohol to cool itself (insert random drunk ass ruskies joke) is just perfect. Gets you about 30minutes of pure runtime. Also has to heat up before you can use it. Last but not least, it can only look below the aircraft, not above.
>>
Taking it apart and rebuild it into a f-16.
>>
>>28380651

Does the MiG-21 have the ability to use air-to-air missiles or is it limited to guns?
