Is this impact scarring from an RPG/ATGM?
>>
>>28376766
Maybe
>>
>>28376766
Looks like Mohammad had some kebabs that didn't agree with him.
>>
Looks like the coax has seen a lot of action
>>
There doesn't appear to be any kind of hole. Maybe it was plugged already?

Also, the amount of shrapnel hits seems sort of small. Then again, this could be affected by armor angle etc.

Some kind of hit, definitely, but I would imagine a RPG doing slightly larger marks. Maybe a hit from 23mm autocannon or a thrown AT grenade or an EFP? Might as well be RPG, their hits look pretty much like that too.
>>
>>28376880
>RPG
>Hole
All it would really do is scratch the paint on the frontal armor of an Abrams. Even a monkey model. You can kind of see a slight indentation of where it hit with the brownish spot in the middle
>>
>>28376880
>There doesn't appear to be any kind of hole. Maybe it was plugged already?

If it didn't penetrate then there's not going to be a hole.
>>
>>28376903
Exterior plate is steel. Shaped charge will penetrate it without any problems. It was HE or round didn't detonate properly.
>>
>>28376910
I wonder how the impact of an RPG-7 round sounds inside the tank, I'm assuming the inside is loud enough already and the crew has their earpro/comms, but it still seems like something that may cause some pants shitting.
>>
>>28376951
It just sounds like a loud knock.
>>
>>28376766
Designated shitting tank.

Wrong meme
>>
>>28376766
>>28376910

you guys are utterly delusional if you think that's an RPG hit. the outer layer of a tank's armor is little more than steel designed to repel small arms, the bits that actually defeat HEAT warheads lie beneath.

if an RPG hits the first layer, it will absolutely go through. whether it gets any deeper and hits something important is another matter.

it's kind of like a person - there are plenty of things that will easily go through flesh, but you need a much greater amount of force to break bone. pretending that the outer layer of tank armor will stop an RPG is like pretending that skin will stop a knife.
>>
>>28376982
No, because if the armor is dense enough behind it's not going to allow a hole to be made on impact, because no material displacement is taking place. It's not like it punches through certain materials then stops when it hits ceramic. The entire package works together.
>>
>>28377019
You are wrong.
>>
>>28377019
>No, because if the armor is dense enough behind it's not going to allow a hole

How can you be this stupid.

>It's not like it punches through certain materials then stops when it hits ceramic.
>CERAMIC
>>
>>28377247
Not him, but if the steel plate is right behind the composite armor, you;ll probably get some cratering but not a hole.
>>
>>28376766
the precursor seems to have impacted it the wrong way- too close to turret maybe that the jet didnt have the time to properly form.

Yes, but snackbar used anti-personnel grenade, so all he achieved are scratches left by shrapnels
>>
>>28377019
That's not true. Especially with shaped charges.
Don't make statements if you don't know at least a bit about the subject.

Catch up to the 1980s and learn how ceramic works.

>Ceramics

Are 1960s tier.

The 1980s are all about NERA composites.
>>
>>28376766
looks exactly like a hit from a heavy round like a .50 bmg or a heavy sniper round similar.

anti tank weapons leave very different marks.
>>
>>28376766
Probably not. You would expect some sort of hole into the armor matrix
>>
>>28377019
There is almost undoubtedly more than just steel and ceramics. Besides, the entire point of ceramics is to abrade away and strip the penetrator of its shape and energy
>>
>>28380519
You do, of course, have evidence to support this when talking about the Abrams and Challenger, right?
>>
>>28377019
you idiot that is not how heat works
you can think of heat a bit like a plasma cutter with a short lived and very intensive flair.
>It's not like it punches through certain materials then stops when it hits ceramic. The entire package works together.
that is the biggest bull i ever heard. modern armor is nothing like that. it's not an either penetrate or do nothing thing unless it's a bounce from a steep angle. but heat don't bounce like ap.

I wasn't even aware that the iraqis had any M1s. How do they get repair parts?

>be iraqi
>hey akmed you wanna be the commander of this tank
>only problem is we can't get the engine to turn over, no idea what's wrong with it
>abdullah, the problem is the PTO is cracked and it's leaking hydro everywhere, also a coolant hose coming from the tower is missing and there's coolant everywhere also the alternator is burned out and isn't generating power to the massive array of Hawker batteries that we don't even have
>>
Even more, how the fuck do they actually have serviceable CVC helmets, a TOCNET, etc. Half the CVCs in my unit are shit

I just can't see any of the rather fragile, easily deadline-able systems in the M1 or any US vehicle for that matter lasting long enough for a foreign military to take advantage of them

literally all the parts are CNC'd by some depot dudes in like kentucky who make a certain number every year. All the cannon plugs are mil spec and pretty much impossible to resolder. Engine gaskets, filters, pulleys, etc are all made in the US

It's mind boggling that ISIS managed to steal a bunch of seven tons and LVSRs and MRAPs
>>
This is depressing. I hate seeing foreigners riding around in US equipment with their own flags flying, like they have something to be proud of.
>>
>>28380635
> This nigga thinks HEAT melts the armor
>>
>>28376766
i love the shot up black humvees the iraqi's use. idk why but i just love the look, i mean theyre all shot to pieces. i havent seen one with out bullet impacts all over them
>>
>>28386047
HEAT will melt steel easily. ceramic will fare much better, probably survive. Composites will have different results, depending. No fucking clue how DU reacts.
>>
>>28385810
get tank from america
get parts from america
>>
>>28387479
It doesn't melt shit. A shaped charge inverts the cone and tuns it into a fuck all fast penetrator. The cone liner doesn't get anywhere hot enough to either turn into "plasma" or burn through metal in the short time it is in contact with the armor.
>>
>>28387479
i like how many idiots fall for the HEAT meme

>>28386047
Umm... yes, that's exactly how it works. The shaped charge in the HEAT warhead creates a jet of copper plasma that burns through just about anything.
>>
>>28388234
i'm this anon >>28380635

i read some about this stuff and it might be that >>28387508 might be right, in most cases it's not real plasma more like fluid than plasma.

>At typical velocities, the penetration process generates such enormous pressures that it may be considered hydrodynamic; to a good approximation, the jet and armor may be treated as inviscid, incompressible fluids (see, for example,[34]), with their material strengths ignored.

it doesn't mean that on impact it doesn't get hot enough from the mechanical energy to easily melt steel, but actually melting or not melting from temperature or not is irrelevant as still will also act like liquid regardless.
>>
This would be called spalting. Super hot jet of liquid copper that cools shortly after passing through armor. MRAP'S worst enemy
