is it really that bad or is it just fuddlore
lot of strong opinions on youtube on both sides. i want to hear /k's opinion
It's harder on your rifle than brass, parts wear, they do so faster with steel. Steel doesn't expand and retract as well as brass and that causes some issues.
All that said it's cheaper and if it shoots well and you don't reload you'll save more shooting steel than you spend on parts that wear earlier than normally expected
>>28376227
not as good for reloading, especially for rifle cartridges
brass is softer than steel, so not really and chance of brass case fucking up steel gun, but there is a chance of steel case fucking up steel gun
generally steel cased shit is poorly made with worth qc because it's budget ammo, so doesn't shoot as well.
hard to reload
It's fine for most anything, slavshit eats it up, but some guns don't like it
>>28376227
Fuddlore.
Very well entrenched fuddlore.
>>28376227
Short version: No it's not that bad
Long verson: Brass is better in the long run, but only if you plan on shooting 20,000 rounds through your AR15 before changing out the barrel and other parts. Some guys did a test where they put thousands of rounds through two ARs, one shooting steel and the other brass. The one shooting steel case did have noticeably more wear, but they did put several thousand round through mind you. Which you probably won't ever do.

>ar15s are the only guns
>>28376299
>buy ak
>shoot tens of thousands of rounds of steel cased until you start keyholing
>buy another ak with money saved on ammo
>>28376299
Well it's AR15 owners who are mostly concerned about steel vs brass. I'm sure there would have been similar results if they used AK's or some other rifles instead.

>not reloading accurate high quality brass ammo for the same price/cheaper than shit tier tula
From what I've gathered it's not the case in steel case ammo that is bad for guns. The only negatives about the actual steel case is it not expanding as well as brass making a poor chamber seal and it's hard on extractors. The problems are in the projectile, powder, and case coatings. The projectiles are usually bimetal which is harder than the copper jacket used on higher quality ammunition so it will wear your rifling down faster. The powder used in steel case is also lower quality which will result in unburnt powder making things dirtier and also short stroking in finicky firearms. I read once that in the Russian ammo they use machine gun powder, which is cheaper, but I don't know if that's bullshit. The lacquer or polymer that they coat the cases in can also stick around in your chamber resulting in stuck cases after build up.
It's kind of a pick your poison thing. If you're shooting something with an easily replaceable barrel then go for it as long as your gun will eat it. With the money saved buying cheaper ammo you can afford replacement barrels and still come out ahead.

>spending precious life hours doing repetitive monkey work to save pennies instead of spending that time enjoying life or working and making an assload more money than you saved
Reloading is for people that want custom loads/SHTF ammo manufacture and anyone doing it for any other reason is a bum.
>>28376378
>thinking people reload to save money
>pretending you're going to be making money in your free time
>pretending making money in what used to be your free time is enjoying life
reloading is a hobby. you shouldn't expect to save money doing it. But if you factor the quality of the ammo you're reloading compared to how much the same quality would cost from factory loads, you'll save a lot.
>>28376242
That is some fuddlore shit right there.
>>28376247
Most likely this,
>>28376395
>>pretending making money in what used to be your free time is enjoying life
Making money to blow on things I like > fiddling with bullshit for hours to save a penny.
I already stated
>Reloading is for people that want custom loads/SHTF ammo
Don't get all buttblasted because somebody shat on your stupid hobby online.
From what I can tell its mostly Fuddlore. The only gun I know that hates it is the M1. I shot 2 boxes of Wolf and it would just bind up and had some issue feeding
>>28376431
if you spend all your free time making money, you won't have any free time to enjoy the things you buy with all the money you make.
I'm constantly broke, but I have a ton of fun shit and enjoy life
>>28376436
A lot of guns can have issues with it due to not being designed for steel cased ammunition
Brass will expand and contract faster than steel, so for instance in an AR you may see people with steel casings stuck in their chambers.
>>28376443
>if you spend all your free time making money, you won't have any free time to enjoy the things you buy with all the money you make.
If I am going to spend my time working on an assembly line in my garage churning out bullets for hours on end to save pennies I would rather spend that time making actual money to buy the amount of ammo I want and have money left over.
You have to ask yourself, how much is my time worth?
If I am going to be working anyway why work for peanuts?
>>28376494
pretty much no one reloads just to save money. it's a hobby. they're enjoying what they're doing.
I just spent hours of my time making a rolling pin. I could have easily just gone to walmart and picked one up for $10 and saved myself the effort. But I did it because I enjoy doing it.
>>28376584
>pretty much no one reloads just to save money
>not reloading accurate high quality brass ammo for the same price/cheaper than shit tier tula
Then people should not use price as a reason to reload
>>28376660
the keyword there was just.
>>28376227
It really just depends on the gun. I've owned a few guns that just hate steel case shit. But i have had others that eat it up. I don't mind running it in my nugget and other Slav guns (especially bolt actions). But im much more hesitant at running it in semi autos. Especially handgun ammo. Right now i can pay 15 dollars for 50 or 25 dollars for 100 of some brass case ammo (american eagle/Remington). Whereas, the steel case shit is exactly the same price. Id much rather run brass case. So unless it costs significantly more I will continue to run brass.
>>28376327
aks are designed with steel ammo in mind. You'll be fine for the life of the rifle, it will probably outlast both our lifetimes combined.
If you shoot brass-cased ammo out of an AK, you are a clownshoe.
>>28376227
Depends on what you're trying to put it through.
>AK
Perfectly fine. You're pretty limited on what you can get that's brass cased anyways.
>AR-15
Depends. Certain ones tend to be picky while others will eat it fine. It is dirtier though and will cause more wear on parts.
>FAL
Fuck no. If you do, enjoy your sheared extractors/kaboom
>>28376227
bad for ARs
good for AKs
Can't stump the Trump.
Please save us, Donny
>>28376227
It's marginally tougher on your extractor and your barrel but with the money you've saved you could buy a new gun after the life of your barrel.
>>28376327

>>28376227
I've shot nothing but 55 gr Wolf--500-600 rounds--out of my Colt 6920 with no problems so far. This ammo is nearly 20 years old.
At least for me, shooting steel is fine. Nothing beats brass, however.
>>28376494
>hours on end to save pennies
No
My m193 clones are 13 cents per round cheaper than the cheapest reman. My m80 clones are 19 cents per round cheaper than the absolute cheapest commercial ammo. I can load about 350 in an hour including brass prep.
Thats about minimum wage.
