So my question is this, I'm thinking of joining the military, and to be clear, I am not a pacifist. I am not against killing people under the right circumstances. It is my duty as a Christian to rid the world of evil. If you read the bible it is literally packed from cover to cover with hardcore men of war who fought, and died, for what they believed in. I am debating on if I should join as 11X or 03xx, or apply for a Chaplain position. My college did not offer an ROTC program, but I did all 4 years of JROTC and honor guard. I cannot seem to find much information on Chaplains in modern military service. I know they exist, but what do they do? I dont want to be locked in some administration building baptizing recruits newborn babies in a sink, or driving a desk, or being a glorified counselor. If I am in that position I would like to be in the shit with the men on the frontline, and again, I am not opposed to picking up a weapon. I am in good shape, and experienced with the AR platform already. Is there suck a thing as a "combat Chaplain" or something of that nature?

I know very little about this subject, but I'm pretty sure if you're a chaplain you will not be in combat, as that could be a huge blow to morale (and/or it could be played up by the enemy) if you are killed.
My guess is that if you want to be in the shit join as the obvious combat-oriented positions. Being very involved and informed with your religion is great, but I doubt it will get you anything special in the military as a foot soldier.

If you want to do some kebab removal, don't join as chaplain. They aren't allowed to carry firearms in any capacity thanks to international treaties. If you still want to do some work that combines the two concepts into a paladin-like job, try going into religious assistance (don't know the job code, sorry). They were allowed to carry firearms and be the chaplain bodyguard, if you want to think of it that way, and also able to help in any religious capacity for the forms of worship.

No. Don't know about the US but generally chaplains stay out of combat to heal wounds of the spirit. They don't carry weapons like neither do doctors or ambulance drivers or such. According to international laws you aren't allowed to kill medics, doctors or chaplains/imams unless they are carrying weapons so generally they aren't issued weapons.
Killing a chaplain during war is considered a warcrime.

Chaplains serve more as a militaries version of field psychotherapists. They'd probably use they real deals but carrying those couches and armchairs around while moving with the troops and going on for hours about every single family relations every single soldier in company isn't really efficient now is it?

This is the navy version, they are like 10% body guard 90% errand boy but they avoid normal chain of command hassles. You really only have to answer to the chaplain you are assigned to and you get a good amount of travel so you see a lot of different things.
You might even get some operator tier training but you'll never use it

Counselor is the main role I saw our Chaplain fulfill.
Maybe 10% of the guys in my Battalion attended the services provided by our chaplain, most of us could give not one shit about religion.
Nonetheless the Chaplain fulfilled an important role.
-He helped guys having difficulties with family back home
-Helped guys who were having difficulty with it all
-He helped out when we lost guys
He would make periodic visits to our COPs/PBs (morale visits) usually when the CSM and Batt Commander were doing their rounds. He also accompanied our command on a goodwill meeting with the local political and religious city council after a particularly bad market bombing.
Most importantly he was a friend you could talk to in private, where you may see official channels and actual medical counselors elsewhere.
I'm an atheist, but our Chaplain was a good man who helped out more than a few guys I knew who were having various personal difficulties.
Never heard of "combat chaplain", but you might really be romanticizing.
Chaplains are also very common in CSHs and out of theater recovery hospitals like Landstuhl where I was sent. Mostly for the same comfort and counseling service.

Don't be discouraged by what others are saying. There's always a place for faith within warfare. Just keep your mind on the bigger picture - that no matter how small your role, you're doing your part to make life somewhat better for someone being oppressed or kept down.
