Just got my stainless upper from PSA. Add to my stripped $55 lower for a sub $500 AR... Cheers
>>
>>28362940
Do you know anything about building AR pistols? I want to have a short upper.
>>
>>28362940
Was there any particular reason picking the stainless steel barrel
>>
>>28362911
Tape external contact surfaces to prevent marring and drive all your pins with channel locks for ease of installation.

Hold the pivot pin detent with a razor blade as opposed to trying to fuck with special tools.

Since you purchased an assembled upper, you don't even need a vise to get the castle nut torqued assuming you aren't a hungry skellington that cant hold the lower between your knees.

Wow that's tough.

I'm picking up the receiver for my pistol build tomorrow. Definitely get a KAK shockwave brace. Gives you a legal "buttstock" for $100
>>
>>28362984
I haven't purchased a upper yet. I was thinking about making a short carbine or pistol. That razor blade idea is genius btw. I was wondering how to tackle that.

>>28362988
You like that?
Where's yours?
>>
>>28362960
Radical firearms has some cheap pistol uppers ~ $230
>>
>>28363039
>pistol-registered lower
I meant a lower that hasn't ever been transferred as a long gun, sorry. There's no actual registry.
>>
>>28362960
I have a 7.5" barrel and broke the gas key off my BCG because I overgassed it. Invest in a pigtail gas tube, adjustable gas block or piston system to save the money
>>
>>28363058
still no
A lower that has never been sold, entered into a bound book, or transferred as a rifle or shotgun.
>>
>>28363005
I wish I had the kind of money to tap this for a full auto.
>>28363057
That's badass. That'll make this a sub $400 build.
>>28363040
I like that. I was also thinking about the "honeybadger" style stock too.
>>28363062
Is over gassing a big problem on pistols?
>>
>>28363100
You mean every stripped lower ever sold. Why are you trying to make this sound complicated?
>>
I'd love to build an AR, just came here to say I love lurking these threads because you ameribros can get all this shit for cheap and not have the government cuck you with literal Canadian-tier gun laws.

Overgassing isn't that big a problem if you stick to 10.5" and up
>>
>>28363198
Gezus that's a nice gun.
10-1/2 isn't bad at all.
>>
>>28362972
It's cheaper, at least from some of PSA's offerings.
>>
>>28363127
Because it is that complicated and as a gun owner it is your obligation to have an autistic level of understanding the asinine laws that govern them.

There can be stupid situations which require critical examination of the law, and not just memorized interpretation and fiddlers.

~10.5/10.3" is the heat for 5.56. Anything less really sacrifices effectiveness in orders of magnitude for not a whole lot gained.

Here is my 10.3" with a 7.5" above it that I ditched for an 8" so I could more comfortably clear the rail for my suppressor.
>>
>>28362972
Strictly to drive up the price a bit. I bought it to resell at the gunshow. I'll put $800 on it and see what happens. I sold a 16" phosphate but last weekend for $700.
>>
>>28363198
What about 300blk? I wanna build a 300blk pistol with a 7.5-9" barrel, but I can find much on gas systems. I do plan on suppressing it and sbr-ing it but that comes later.
>>
>>28363040
that looks fucking retarded. why is there a rear buis? leave it to the french to fuck up a pistol
>>28363106
>honeybadger style stock
not without an sbr stamp you're not
>>
>>28362984
badly need advice on where to find assembled uppers.

best so far has been red barn armory (offers some degree of customization) but that can't be the extent of my options

I'm looking for a 16" threaded/mid with top/bottom rails only. Is keymod/etc my best bet?

Lastly: need some solid BUIS
>>
>>28364420
How much are you looking to spend on the assembled upper? Are you interested in nitriding or chrome lining to prolong your barrel life, or is the budget final where such considerations are not an option at this point?
>>
Check out these places, they are good to get started, especially on a budget.

>>
>>28364544
I'm hoping 400-500 will set me up nicely (complete upper including BUIS). Willing to spend more on optics down the line but that's probably about it.

Can you summarize some of the treatments (CL/nitriding/etc) and where I might want them (barrel/BCG/etc)? Willing to invest in these things if it'll make a difference
>>
Speaking of 3 selector locations, is it legal to have a 3 position safety if you don't have anything in the FCG or LPK that needs it?

For instance, you have your standard AR LPK, but you changed to a 3 position safety but have no third pin, burst/auto disconnect, or DIAS. Is it legal?
>>
>>28362911
Cry like a baby because you paid too much, then kill yourself for those cringeworthy fire selectors. Seriously, OP...

Nice, this summer/fall I did a cheap psa build for about $450, plus rear sight, magazines, cleaning kit, it came out right around $500. put a couple 1000 rounds through it of various ammo with no issues. Contemplating putting on some drop-in quadrails or just saving up for a whole new upper...
>>
>>28364339

>>

Nitriding is a surface hardening process that will preserve the dimensions of the barrel from prior to treatment (an accurate barrel stays accurate). It is more corrosion resistant than chrome lining, but not quite as hard so chrome lining is still the winner when it comes to ultimate durability for either high round counts or high abuse (mag dumps, full auto, etc).

The important parts to put your money on an AR are the barrel, bolt, and if highly accurate fire is a concern, fire control. Everything else is just jewelry.

Fancy bolt carrier coatings will not necessarily make your rifle perform better, but many are easier to clean. Look for carriers that are either chrome lined per mil spec or nitrided. A standard Phosphate finish for the exterior is fine.

Look for bolts that use a Carpenter 158 steel which is per mil spec, or 9310 bolts (which is a slightly harder but more brittle steel) are becoming more common and seem to perform well as an option. Either way check to see they are High Pressure and Magnetic Particle Tested (HPT/MPT) per mil spec.

If you are going to be shooting irons for a while, invest in decent ones you can grow with. While they are not my favorite (I am used to the look of a standard front post), the Magpul MBUS work well enough for under $100 for the pair and will tuck away if that is your preference once you have an optic.

Stepping up slightly in price you can grab "surplus" Matech and Knight's Armament 200-600m rear sights off of ebay for $60-80 and pick a front sight of your preference to match. Those two rear sights will offer adjustability not often found in less expensive BUIS if you will be shooting irons at range.

Earlier someone recommended Palmetto State Armory (PSA) for their uppers. They build their uppers in waves so you may not see something they have listed you like in stock. Chances are if you check back over a few weeks you will see it come back into stock as it enters their build schedule.

>>
>>28364745
also includes $20 for bgc for lower and transfer fee
>>
>>28364761
<- Cont

Their Premium line is good as they use chrome lined FN manufactured barrels and mil spec bolt carriers, but may be just outside of your price range.

You will see they offer what they call their Freedom line as well which is less expensive since they use a different barrel manufacturer, but they do offer Freedom uppers that are Nitrided/Melonited, as a lower cost option these are recommended.

can confirm about PSA stock, changes pretty often, so be patient. has been pretty low since xmas sales and stuff but stuff is starting to come back in stock. also, if $ is an issue wait for free shipping and save $20, free shipping happens quite a bit. sign up for their email deals thingy so you dont miss out.

>>28364785
bcg/ch wasnt included with the psa $200 upper, I got the bcg from AIM for $80 and a $14 charging handle from amazon, free shipping on both. no regrets. rear sight is a diamondhead knockoff for $20, just needed something until i get something better here soon

Built an M16a4gery
>Anderson lower
>PSA LPK
>ALG QMS trigger
>KAK A2 Industries stock kit
>PSA Premium CHF 20" upper
>Anchor Harvey carry handle
>Surefire M951
>KAC M5 RAS
>KAC Broomhandle
>OKC-3s bayonet

Will either get an Acog down the road or just settle on an aimpoint.

Planning my next build
Either an A2 (because I have a spare A2 stock kit and LPK)
or
M4gery
or
neato tacticool side charger carbine
>>
>>28364884
or
Mk18 Mod 0 pistol that I'd SBR eventually

different anon here(specifically >>28364745 >>28364859): in all reality, unless you are building a higher end setup and need something fancy for best accuracy/reliability, any bcg will work fine, just comes down to your personal wants/needs.
this is the one i have, am very happy with it.

thanks anon. I may be selecting a BCG from options given to me for an assembled upper

Is it worth it to completely assemble your own upper vs buying an assembled one? I feel like ordering it piecemeal from more than one site can stack shipping costs making it rather expensive
>>
>>28365135
For an inexpensive upper, the pre-assembled units are often your best bet. When you are building a higher end upper though, building your own allows you to select the exact components you want and you will usually save money on individual high end components versus a pre-assembled high end upper.

Interesting. I bought an upper like two years ago and I don't think it's been in stock but one time since. Funny how they kind of rotate their selections.

Where can I get an anime meme lower?

then leave it to some inbred codkiddie to think that red white blue STRIPES means murrica while his BUIS are as functional as a walking dead prop gun.

Hardened arms any good? Complete upper at a budget price. Contemplating that over building one since I lack tools and experience.
>>
>>28363005
What's the legality of an auto sear, assuming lower is registered?
>>
>>28367029
They are already legal. My M16A1 came with all full auto parts. I just bought a new FCG so I didn't have to fuck around with the FA parts. It's the lowers that are the registered part. A full auto lower is like 20-30k
>>
>>28364720
Yup.
>>
>>28367306
Remember, possession is intent in the eyes of the ATF.

If you have the parts to make a machinegun, (and they find out somehow) they will fuck you until you cry for mercy.
