Can we talk stocks for a moment?

I want to carve my own, but I know little about wood. And since this is my first go, I want to keep it as cheap as possible because I will fuck up.

So, basically What is the cheapest wood to make a functional stock?
>>
>cheap
Just don't bother
>>
Laminated hardwood.
>>
>>28362124

Can you make a laminate, op? Have enough clamps?
>>
>>28362071
just go buy a 2x6. they're like $5. or pick one up on craigslist for free, people throw that shit out all the time. you could probably even use an old pallet to try your hand at making a few.
>>
>>28362158
What type of 2x6? Pine? Beech? CEDAR?
>>
>>28362071
Why don't you talk to a tree trimmer and get some black walnut or oak.

It's doable, but it takes a shitton of patience and moderate skill. Just google blanks, and there's a ton of tutorials out there as well. Seeing as you haven't done even a basic search yet, I'll assume you're a retard and will have a pile of shavings, glue, and pieces of finger all over your bench. Have fun!

oak is good. walnut is good. just get any hardwood and you should be fine. Do you have any tools to do this with though? or are you just going to start hacking at a piece of wood with your kabar brand kabar?
>>
>>28362185
red oak is cheap and can be finished well. look for a 2x6 that is relatively straight grained

you're going to want to use this as an opportunity to purchase a router and drill press.

Start with a 2x6 for a few practice runs. You wont want to shoot with it, but you can get cheap 2x6's (untreated) and not waste a lot of money on practice runs

Thats a good question.

On a semi related topic, if i wanted to change the color of an sks stock, is that possible without just getting a new stock?

Is there a way to leech color from wood, like you would cosmoline? And could i then use dye for desired results?

You won't even be able to choose a wood that will be workable but provide a stock that won't split or warp if you don't know anything about wood. You might get a piece from a good species only to find you ruin it because it's got difficult grain and your hardware store chisels are shitty and dull.

tl;dr you have to be a decent woodworker to make something as tricky as a rifle's stock.

Since it's blackpowder you would have ruined something nice but committed no crime.

Otherwise you would have built an SBR which is very naughty

Jet.
>>
>>28362071
Chippie here. The first thing you ought to do is buy a boatload of ALS/CLS and make a couple of dozen mock ups before you try it on a decent piece of timber. It's a lot easier to work so you can get the hang of your technique, and it's cheap enough that it won't matter when all you end up with is some novelty firewood.

As far as tooling goes, a small bandsaw is a must. You probably could do a lot of it with a coping saw, but that'd be hard going if you're not used to it, and in terms of time it'd be quicker to plant a seed and persuede the tree to grow in the shape of a rifle. You'll want a spokeshave, and some decent chisels - marples would probably be about right. They hold an edge quite well, and allthough they're not cheap (in the UK at least) they're not quite in to the "only worth buying if someone is going to pay you to use them" price range.

Other than that, be prepaired to spend three times longer on it than you expect it to take, measure twice cut once, and allways be mindful that it's easier to to take a bit more off than put a bit back on.
>>
>>28366323

It's easier to lean to use a band saw than to get an actually good panel rip saw and rip your shit by hand. Much quicker too.

Power tools are easier, hand tools require more skill.

it will make his life significantly easier though.
he could just go break a limb off a tree and start rubbing it on some rocks. it would just take a really fucking long time and turn out poorly.
also, they did have draw knives and chisels back then. just not bandsaws.

I've offered to have the stock on my dad's 1100 repaired as part of his xmas present. What's a reasonable price to expect to have this done professionally?

Pic related, there's a crack at the top of the stock where it meets the receiver. there's a small gap on the very top where the wood split, but no material appears to be missing.

It operates fine despite the crack, so this is purely for aesthetic reasons.

It happened when he dropped it many years ago.

If you're going to use hand tools be prepare to fuck up a lot of prototypes. I haven't done gun stocks but I have done paddles and my advice would be to perfect the shape you want in a cheap softwood like spruce, then make your final one out of your desired wood.
>>
>>28366388
This is why you don't DON'T fuck with lathes.

>>28366468

what's the worst that could happen if you mess up?? as long as the gun fits, who cares if the stock is a little chunky and has a couple branches growing out of it
>>
>>28366473
The worst is that the gun doesn't fit, your barrel isn't straight etc. It can be very frustrating as well to mess something up when you've been working on it for a long time. If you are trying to carve a stock and don't know how wood splits because of its grain you are not going to have a good stock without a lot of headache.

Maple. Maple stocks aren't common, but they once were for muzzleloaders and make a nice stock. It's also similar to walnut in hardness (though maple doesn't take diamonds (checkering) as nicely nor as finely as walnut.

(pic related)

Beech also works.

That said, where I live people cut down black walnut trees every spring and summer and give it away. If you read up on curing/drying wood -- and have the space -- you can cut, dry and store your own blanks. If you want to get into it hardcore, a chainsaw mill isn't too expensive and allows you to do a several trees a day.
>>
>>28362158
>>28362185

This guy has never made a stock in his life. A 2x6 is both too narrow and not wide enough.
>>
>>28362283
Oak's grain isn't often fine enough for stock work. The larger grain chips out. That's why you see walnut, maple, beech and even birch stocks, but NEVER see oak stocks.

The guy who said "poplar" might know -- it would make a good practice wood, but wouldn't be ideal to actually be a gunstock.

Essentially, despite how fucking sure of everything /k/ seems to be, /k/ is one of the worst places on the internet to get solid advice on guns and gunsmithing. Try google.

Oh look, I googled this right fucking away: http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/gun-nuts/2012/10/more-wood

Maximum hardness isn't necessarily desirable (keep in mind that increased hardness tends to mean increased brittleness)

OP should buy some clamps and laminate some beech or walnut. Blanks are expensive and you'll fuck up your first one (and probably your second too)
