What does /k/think of my vepr?

It was between this and a psl, and I'm glad you guys convinced me otherwise.

Vepr 54r
23"barrel
Tapco trigger

Stock stained and finished with Amber shellac.

I tried to get it as close to Russian Red as I could. I didn't like the dark brown walnut color it comes in.

I realised the thing i don't like. It's the stock, looks too bulky.

hello brother
>>
>>28359933
It's the stock vepr furniture. It is bulky but surprisingly comfortable and lightweight. The recoil is very soft compared to a mosin. I have a 91/30 with an archangel stock, and this is 200% less fatigue inducing. I can throw an entire spam can down range without wanting to put it down like I would a mosin after a couple packs of ammo.
>>
>>28359617
you should watch this video

>>
>>28359978
I couldn't justify getting that one. The stock, although pretty, is super expensive and not really necessary.

If you really want an svd style stock, get the one with the tapco trigger, flash hider for 959, and get a ironwood svd stock that not only looks better, but is as close to the real thing for about the same price or even a little less.

http://ironwooddesigns.com/IWDVEPRSVD.html
>>
>>28359978
Also it shoots great. Everyone who has fired it has fallen in love with it. The recoil is very manageable, especially when compared to a mosin.

Very accurate too, out to 300m with ease. I've only had 4 jams in about 750rds where the case lip catches while feeding and causes the case lip to warp and get stuck in the chamber. It will not chamber all the way so no damage is caused other than to the round. It's only happened with the 10rd sgm mag. Stock 5rd is flawless.

PSLfags on suicide watch, hows it feel paying more for lower quality rifle that can't shoot as wide a range of ammo?
>>
>>28361108
Feels bretty gud being a member of vepr master race desu.

The only thing that makes me smile bigger when I shoot it is a saiga with a slide fire stock =)
>>
>>28360098
Thanks for the suggestion but I already bought it and it's waiting to be shipped.
I like getting myself something nice for Christmas every year and my budget more than allowed me this toy, even with the PSO scope. cant wait to shoot it.
>>
>>28360455
A Romanian PSL was a tempting option but after some research I found the same complaints. Can't really go wrong with the VEPR.
>>
>>28361298
It's a blast. On mine the irons were off considerably of the box but it comes with an adjusting tool in the cleaning kit. I had to set my irons at 700m to hit anything, but now that they're adjusted I can ping a 6in ar500 gong 9/10 with lps surplus at 150 yards. I'm still fighting the scope into zero.
>>
>>28361353
It sure is a pretty gun and I love the way it looks, but just like you, after research I figured 1k for a old most likely worn out surplus rifle, or 1k for a brand new stronger, better, chrome lined gun.

The decision was easy one I got over the ugly stock. Now I wouldn't go back even if you paid me. The hand hole grip is super comfortable.
>>
>>28359610
Damn, looks great OP! Wish I had one, though...
>>
>>28360158
Yep, got an extra set of 5rd mags since I'll be shooting from a bench all the time.
>>
I own a square cut vepr in 308 with a 16in barrel. Love the thing to death...feed it tulammo 308 all day without a problem. It'll never be a precision rifle but it makes a hell of a shtf gun.
>>
>>28360435
I'm suggesting that no aks in a full cartridge cost 500 bucks, so why would the psl other than when century is importing and dumping them on the market kindof like they did with the $500 aes-10b rpks some months back too
>>28361108
pretty good actually, sporter rifles don't do it for me and it's never let me down in terms of accuracy or fun
>>28360455
> can't shoot anything heavier than light ball without risking major damage
sure, but I've used heavy ball 54r in other guns and it's fairly unimpressive other than busting ice for fun, and 99% of surplus ammo is light ball anyway. I disliked it enough that it's only got 1 job, and busting ice is it. I was hoping it'd at least bust mud noticeably better, but nope.
> pencil barrel whips like a dick
it does? I realize it could be effected somewhat by heat, but I'm not dumping mags of 54r as fast as I can pull the trigger so it's never happened to me.
> paper thin receiver barely holds up
they use rpk receivers too mr smart guy
> any psl you'll get today is either built off an old used parts kit or had been owned for an extended period with no idea how it was treated.
mine was new when I got it, built in cugir, not one of these very hit and miss kit builds you saw at the end
>>
>>28362008
Your right that ak's have gone up in price as well. But the increased price of an AK in the last six years is a lot less than the psl's double or triple price hike. Its just not a $1200- $1500 rifle, especially when you compare it to the vepr. Nothing wrong with owning one if you enjoy it, but if someone asked which is the better buy today, it easily goes to the vepr.
>>
>>28362119
Veprs are certainly the better bang for the buck if you strictly want a 54r rifle nowdays.
I have a couple of calibers of vepr and love them, not a better built ak out there, but god damn do people love to overemphasize and/or regurgitate every overblown rumor ever said about psl rifles. Or just make shit up like mr thin receiver guy up there.
It's downright annoying.
>>
>>28359610
>vepr 54r
Are you an African?

Just kidding, it looks good man. I'd love to have one of these.
>>
>>28362219
Ya, two of my friends and I bought psl's back when you could get them for under $600, so I know they're not complete shit. We've all sold them since, one guys actually broke. And your right that most of the shit talk comes from people who never owned one.

One of the pins in the receiver kept falling out. Don't remember exactly which one it was, but we weren't able to fix it with new parts. Basically the hole in the receiver was now too big and the pin slipped out with use. But it was from century, so color me surprised

Veprs wouldnt be so bad if the 54r version wasnt single stack bullshit leaving 5 round mags or 10-20 round massive mags.

https://www.legionusa.com/ak-russian-svd-rifle-vepr-7.62x54r-23-barrel.html I wish I knew about this one, before I bought my Vepr. This furniture is beautiful. I wish to replace the Hotdog bun with a tri-rail, but they seem to be out of stock.

This is op.

I cut a couple vent holes in mine to give it a slightly better look. Still not 100% svd, but I think it looks ok. Better than a hot dog bun lol

Broski! Looks good! I have a thing for Veprs. I have to polish my bolt like that, but haven't set the time aside to do so.
>>
>>28367621
Polishing took like 10 mins. I went over it lightly with a dremel and 320grit sand paper to get the paint off, and finished with 1000 and 1500 to get that sheen. I tried going over it with polishing compound that came with the dremel but it didn't make any difference. Probably only take 20 mins with sand paper alone, I'm just lazy lol.
