I am seriously considering buying a Tikka T3, but there are so many options I am just not sure what to pick.

I am leaning towards a compact tactical in .308 winchester.

Of course, a Hunter in .223 would be much less expensive up front a well as the cost of ammo.

The tactical just seems too over the top, but perhaps it would be fun to get into longer range shooting, as in >500 yards

.308 is more versatile.

What is your major reason for getting it?

Hunting and long range: .300 winmag

Varmint and plinking: .223

I have two rifles for Varmint and plinking, a Moisin and a .22, so I may as well get a decent long range rifle and save up for some optics as well.

so

.308
.300
or 30-06

.300 winmag

dem fuckin' ballistics

I have the lite 308 and love it. I don't know if I'd pay $400 more for the ctr; at that point I'd go for a ruger RPR if I was just doing long range target shooting. I think the tikka' really shine as a hunting rifle; light, accurate, well priced.

I'm still trying to find a decent heavy barreled 7mm rem mag.

I thought the tikka ctr 308 is around $800-900?
As much as i slobber over the 10 round mag, i know for sure that'll cost $100+ each. And many on here have already pointed out the ultimate pointlessness of such a thing in a hunting/long range rifle.

So ill just get a t3 lite for 500-600 and spend the remaining on optics.

The Compact Tactical seems like an excellent rifle.
>A multipurpose rifle that adapts to any given situation.
The Tikka T3 Compact Tactical Rifle introduced a 10-round steel magazine to the Tikka product line. This rifle comes with a durable aluminum trigger guard and a magazine release lever that enables rapid magazine changes. Its compact size, Picatinny rail, Teflon® bolt and 20” semi-heavy barrel contour with 5/8x24 muzzle threads, make this rifle a reliable tool for all training and hunting purposes.

The heavier barrel, steel magazines (not the the old plastic ones are bad, but still) and quick release just seem like excellent quality of life improvements. If I had the money, I would buy the CTR, and then a scope down the road.

But as it is, I think I am going to get a hunter stainless in .300

Why 300winmag? If you're not doing .308 for ammo price, you may as well go 7RM for much better ballistics.

OP youre thinking about it wrong.
Get the Tikka T3 Lite in 30-06.
I own it and love it.
Owned by sako which is owned by beretta, just buy it.
>>
>>28361001
And dont get the retarded fucking tact one..
>>
>>28360794
Youre buying a hunting rifle why the fuck do you want all the stupid shit?
>>
>>28359379
I've got the T3 Forest in .30-06 for big game. Love the action. Ruger copied it in the American if you're looking for a cheap alternative.
>>
What do you guys suggest I feed a t3 in 308? I can get a hunter for $500 because of where I work and I thought I should jump on the deal while it's still available. I could just shoot the cheap stuff until I move to an area where long distance shooting is more accessible but that's not what a good rifle deserves. I was thinking Remington core-lock
>>
>>28361533
Perfecta $15 a box
And Federal is better than remington
>>
>>28360110

.308 for regular long range work

.30-06 for heavier bullets for bigger game but not as accurate

.300 winmag when you have the money to burn and want both.
>>
>>28361764
>Not as accurate
I call bullshit.
>>
>>28361533
I think that the Perfecta and ZQ1 are just (X)M80 ammo (147gr 308) that's used for machine gun and should not expect better than 3MOA. After that you pretty much get right into the match stuff at ~$1rd.

You can pick up M80 for <50cpr right now online (SGAmmo) or at walmart. I've got 1,000 rds of M80 that I'll be reloading once I order my press/kit.

Use Federal Vital-Shok 180gr Nosler Partitions and you can do elk with .308 perfectly fine.
>>
>>28361805
Not him, but I've heard damn near every source say that there's a (near negligible) inherent accuracy benefit that .308 has over .30-06. Personally, I don't see the point in '06 these days. .308 does everything it can do and cheaper. Neither perform great at 'long range' distance.
>>
>>28361860
>>28361710
Thank you for the info. To clarify, I work at an Academy sports, and though we have some extremely cheap 308, I wouldn't be getting any kind of performance out of it. We have the core-lock for $19 which comes out to about $16 a box for me. Is the federal worth buying over the Remington when I won't get to shoot beyond 200yds for the next few years?
>>
>>28362149
Yes. Remington makes dirty ammo. You can still shoot longrange and what not with any of the ammo, specialty ammos imo are kind of a waste of money since you're in reality arent going to be taking 600yard shots at a deer.
>>
>>28361887
Yeah if you reload it, .308 isn't legal for all animals and its a tacticool round...
25-06 is far better if you want to get into that catagory.
