Why do people hold pistols like this, specifically 1911's? Shouldn't they keep their thumbs out of the way of the slide?
>>
it helps people get a higher grip, reduce effective bore axis, and lower muzzle flip. They're not putting pressure or touching the slide; just putting their thumbs somewhere.
>>
They're not holding the slide. Thumbs are forward not making contact.

It's just another philosophy on firing handguns. If done right, you get a little more stability. It won't hurt your thumb.

It's not like there are two perfect spots to put your thumbs or anything silly like that...

Afaik this is the only proper way to hold a handgun. It's how I was taught.

Don't tell me you're a teacupper, OP.

I prefer GI grip. It's called a HANDgun, not a Hands-gun.

Literally everyone is taught to shoot modern pistols like this. It's not a "tacticool mallninja fad," it actually works.

I think he means something like this.
>>
>>28356402
People hold their 1911s like this to keep their thumb over the manual safety. It provides a comfortable grip, recoil management and prevents accidental engagement of the safety. Same thing applies to every other model of handgun even if it doesnt have a manual thumb safety.
>>
>>28356802
I've done this at the range with a 1911. It has a much slower recovery than with a two handed grip.

Whodathunkit
>>
>>28357080
That stance doesn't really reduce recoil. That stance is for taking a single shot as steady as you can possibly get in a free standing position. More of a competition thing
>>
>>28356434
Consent, I do it too often. especially during a longer shooting, when is a stronger hand little bit tired. I'm helping out with my thumb, I lay it in front of chatch (CZ 75) I have bigger hands so no problem to reach there. In this grip position I managed to achieve very nice converging - even during rapid firing.

> Fucking big disadvantage is the fact that once you give touch the catch - slow down "slider" movement and the gun jams immediately

Chick leaning is great for reducing muscle fatigue and giving you maximum bone structure. Women do it because they have lower muscle mass and they can steady the rifle better, but end up getting thrown around. It's terrible for recoil control, and you're still going to hit what you shoot at with proper trigger pull and sight alignment while leaning into the gun.

>There`s people in /k/ RIGHT NOW that not only don`t know proper shooting stance, but they troll those who do know.

This is gonna sound stupid as fuck but can someone give me a quick rundown of the stance for two handed pistol? I've only really shot one handed because that's how I was taught, my dad was into bullseye shooting. I like to think I'm pretty good, at least on par with my friends when they shoot two handed but that makes me think they suck
>>
>>28356402
I have literally never seen someone hold a pistol like that.

I edc a 1911, and I certainly don't hold it like that.

dude how the fuck am I supposed to take a picture with both my hands on the gun

I guess kind of like this picture

basically right thumb over the mag release and left thumb under (but slightly forward) of right thumb

stance is low forward isosceles

it's entirely possible that this is "bad shooting form". I had some formal education on shooting but that was a long ass time ago, also more with modern compacts/subcompacts vs 1911, this is pretty much how I've been "naturally" holding it since I got it a few years ago.

I guess I don't hold every gun the same way, now that I'm thinking about it. before I made my first post I could tell what was in the picture was 'strange' to me, but I wasn't really sure exactly "how" I gripped it until I went to go pick it up, and then I went to go grab a different thicker pistol and I can see that my 'natural' grip on that is slightly different than my 1911; with the fat doublestack left thumb is further forward and kind of pointing down; right hand in general is in the exact same place as the 1911

For the reasons >>28356416 stated.

Additionally, you will find that the vast majority of professional shooters will grip their 1911s and other pistols this way.

Pic related is Bob Whaley of Gunsite fame.

At approximate 2:16 of the following video you will also see Ron Avery and Travis Haley gripping their 1911s thumbs high. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZE0qk_fX94

There is an older training video where a phalanx of FBI agents advance on a target hip firing 1911s that I wanted to post and couldn't find.

Why the fuck was everyone so terrible at using guns back then?

100 years from now are all of the stances and training techniques we use going to be this obsolete?

Most cameras have timers.

That is a bad pistol grip as the dominant hand's thumb prevents the support hand from getting solid and high contact with the frame.

By just youtube searching "how to grip pistol" you'll find that the OP pic is the dominant method.

>>
>>28359704
Quite interesting, I think I'll give that a try the next time I'm at the range.

Yeah I see what you mean about being the dominant method, I noticed that while looking for the picture since most everything that came back looked like OP's pic when i googled pistol grip methods or something to that effect.

I guess these things change every now and then, and I hadn't really been "following" stuff as much as I had in the past so I was kind of going off of what I implicitly remembered and what felt comfortable.

I'm curious what that will be like for you, I was always taught to hold my pistol high and thumbs up.

I went scrolling through videos and it's the only way Jerry Miculek holds his semi-autos too.
>>
>>28359782
The only real change I've experienced is that I used to always hold pistols with my support hand index finger on the front of the triggerguard.
It felt best at the time, but I stopped doing it and now it feels weird to me when I try it
