A friend sent me an email about these Hell cannons with some fear mongering about them being built in the US. Basically they are home made mortars that a welded together from plumbing and propane supplies.
I was curious about the payload used in these homemade mortars... So you know I can help the ATF be on the look out for baddies that dont love Merica. And like science and stuff.
I am guessing they use black or smokeless powder to launch the round, but I'm not sure how they detonate the payloads. Also in the following images that have a white powder mixed into the "hell cannon powder"

It's both not part of the propellant (they've used everything from homemade black powder to high-order explosives to basically a giant "potato cannon" fueled with propane) and probably not an explosive, considering how they handle it.

Ammonium nitrate, at least in a usable form, is a dark grey, wet mush due to the [random petroleum product on hand at the time of manufacture].
Nitrated ammonia prills are white, but are so fucking water absorptive they have to remain in prill (horsepill-ish) form and coated until mixed with whichever oil is on hand to make the explosive. Same deal with AN/AL, still has to be wet-mixed with a petroleum product to keep it from absorbing water and deactivating.

If the logistical network does not exist to produce proper munitions on a large scale, then the logistical network does not exist to supply propane tanks indefinitely. If you watch videos of them being used (I've watched a lot), they do score direct hits with them and they can be quite devastating. If you have time and security to set one up and start dropping canisters on the enemy, you can destroy an enemy position and even buildings. If you have time to fire a pretty large number of shots. They're a fine weapon for largely static urban front lines like you see in Syria

At 5:15 I'm guessing there should have been better bracing/counterweights in the rear. This one also looks relatively lightly built compared to the others, which use heavy castings such as transmission housings as well as structural plate for their frames.
This can be seen in 7:36: there would have to be a fuckton of weight to the rear to keep the launcher from sliding downhill, since the wheels aren't chocked. Don't feel like doing the calcs on it, but I'm guessing each of these launchers weighs at least a ton.
The one at 7:35 is interesting in that it seems to have some form of suspension set up to spread out the recoil over time. Don't know how this would affect stability/accuracy, if the shell leaves the launcher before it moves.
Several times, at 2:25, 8:50, 9:05 (falls off the building and rolls around before exploding), the shells appear to have a delay between impact and detonation. Don't know if this is due to a slow secondary charge, or if the detonator somehow is delayed, I would be curious about the details on this. Possibly the operators use timed detonators on some of these, in addition to impact.
As a fabricator I find these devices pretty damn interesting, would be curious about the details on detonators, and propellant/ignition for launching. At 3:30, it appears the operator is lighting a fuse, but it's difficult to tell much apart from that.

The same problem occurs shooting an air gun at around 800fps, follow through/stability is absolutely critical, whereas when shooting .223 or .30-06 the bullet leaves the barrel fast enough the recoil doesn't change PoI

It seemed to me the recoil control was parking a tractor behind it. I was imagining they could do something with truck shocks for recoil control but after looking at video of the French Canon de 75 modèle 1897 firing (first cannon with a hydraulic recoil system) It's barrel recoils directly backwards, doing that on something this imprecisely engineered would seem to be a stretch. I wonder if the simplest thing wouldn't be to use a recoilless rifle like system. Maybe that is what's going on with that last gun.
