Just being in the military doesn't make you an expert.
Plenty of guys in my unit couldn't hit shit with their rifles. Which I don't understand because if you just listen to the instructions, they break down shooting accurately to it's basics, breathing, trigger squeeze, sight picture, etc. If you keep all that in mind, you can easily hit man sized targets at 300meters with iron sights. But then again, there were a lot of idiots I knew too.
Just because someone was in the military doesn't mean they're an expert marksman and heavily trained with weapons. Most people in the Army, let alone in other services like Navy and Air Force are not combat personal.
Personally, if I do get into a conversation with another veteran, if you weren't Infantry, Cav Scout, or Tanker, (lower tier would be Combat Engineer, Artillery), then to me you're not my "brother". Sorry, I respect that someone serves their country in any capacity, but I'm not going to listen to some cook tell me about tactics and weapons.

Only a handful of times have we fired pistols at work, most guys wouldn't know how to clear a stoppage if they encountered one on the range, much less under fire.
Sure there's a bunch of us that are proficient with various small arms and aren't talking out our asses when it comes to firearms, but that's only because we've taken the time to do it outside of work.
This all applies to cops aswell. I know lots of LEO who've only ever fired their pistol for training/range quals and know nothing more than what they've been issued.

I can understand that then. But I would assert that radical ideas can be taken to the mainstream. But as to what I'm arguing about, I just think that the world is fucked, always has been, and always will to some degree or another. There can be periods where there's temporary peace and non-aggression between nations (usually an artificial one), and periods where the interests of various nations or entities clash. While my previous posts do defend the military to a degree, what I should have said was that I don't approve pre-emptive intervention ala Libya and Iraq 2.0, but that measures should be taken in case shit goes down in some way that will affect us. Given that we've kicked around a lot of people, invariably there will be animosity towards us that will not heal anytime soon, but has to be given caution. That doesn't mean I think we should be constantly building bulwarks against everyone, I'm for gradual improvement of relations with Iran and Russia, but at the same time readying a backup in case things somehow go south or shit hits the fan in some unforeseen circumstance. I do not believe in world-peace, but I do believe in periods of temporary nonviolence between nations.
