iirc, it was also because it kicked the case to the top, so it was "common" to get brass up your face when firing it, so the side grip was used for that.

Back then in the late 1800's someone saw bulletdrop. He discovered that if you turn your gun by 180 degrees, the bullet fist goes up and then down, wich means less need to compensate for bulletdrop.
Thats where topfeed guns came in to indicate the shooter if he is holding the gun properly. Now we dont have any need for that because on all modern guns the barrels are by default build in by 180 degrees rotatet.
The need for holding sideways is from the 1970's sniper era when wind from one direction was so strong that you could not even zero it with your sights.
But today its pretty useless, yes.
Apparently the original bergmann smg manual from 1918 instructs on keeping the gun sideways and using the recoil for a sweeping fire, but I couldn't find one online right now.

When I was using m16a2's for mout, they taught us to tilt the rifle sideways, place the buttstock on top of our shoulder, and place it on burst. All due to its length.

I would rotate my M4 90 degrees counter clockwise (ejection port facing up) when shooting at night under nods + peq.
