Hello /k/,
I have a UV-5R5 Baofeng radio due on Tuesday with a programming cable.
I heard someone mention something about CHIRP and programming threads, I didn't see anything in the sticky pertaining to radios. Any information you guys can provide to me that would be useful?
Chirp is fine, just make sure you install the drivers for your radio, I think they are available on youtube somewhere
Don't use channels other than FRS/GMRS. I would ideally recommend buying two radios so you can troubleshoot them and verify that you are broadcasting correctly.
If you live in a populated area, avoid unnecessarily keying the mic, just as a general precaution.

Good luck, the vast majority of the programing cables have a Chinese knock-off of a Prolific chip in them and the drivers won't play nice. You'll spend the afternoon rolling your drivers back to program your radio and never do it again.

On the other hand, if you do it right and find out the local used frequencies, you'll never do it again anyhow

Hey OP
Bought a baofeng 3-gt and had problems programming it because of the cables PROLIFIC chip. Dont update to newest firmware, download older version.
When programming, set to frequency mode on a dead channel.
Always verify correct COM port
Verify programming cable fully seats into port on radio
Just before syncing, turn off radio then turn it back on to full volume

How hard is it to get a ham licence?
I am interested in science but went to a rather poor public highschool and have no memory of electronics.
I am however a pretty quick learner.

This thanks anon
Can the Baofeng be programmed to pick up CB signals? I just want to listen to truckers when I drive.
>>28338598
Looking again I realize how fucked up her kit is.
genuinely curious, what's the purpose of having one of these radios? I kind of want one, but I'm not sure why
>>28343193
Listen to the local lumberyard/police/ems/port/ ect. Also stuff far away on calm nights. And play/study for HAM licence
>>28341891
It's verrrrrrry easy to get your Technician (lowest level) license. Google "ham technician study guide" or something, and there are plenty of good sites designed to prepare you for the quiz. To get the license you just need to pass a simple quiz, which includes basic questions regarding HAM and its usage. I'm currently working on mine, and hoping to have in the next couple of weeks.
>>28343193
Like >>28343285, you can listen into places, and tinker around with HAM users. Another usage is using them as walkie talkies or in conjunction with walkie talkies. I know I lot of preppers, airsofters, and some PMCs use radios like these for communication.
