There was story in one /thg/ thread about Char B1 that attempted to break through German lines and came under heavy anti-tank fire. Maingun was pierced by shell, and turret got stuck after hit from 88mm, so crew just smashed though Pak's with sheer force of armor and engine, crushing anti-tank guns and their crews.
Seeing tank with blood-covered tracks, rolling their way, bouncing off hit after hit, Germans lost their shit and started running away. Tank broke defences completely, and after reaching friendly forces was abondoned, as it had no fuel, neither single functional gun.

Feasibility of 88s as anti-tank weapon was tested already in Spain. It's not like Germans didn't know they may face something too tough for 37mm.
