Just got my first sks for Christmas and am about to start into removing the cosmoline. Anyone have any quick tips on the process? I've done some homework and I think I get the idea but any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the club anon! What country/factory and year is yours?

I use mineral spirits on any metal parts, soak them for 24 hours then just wipe them down and oil appropriately. The rectangle Chinese food containers are great for this process, they'll fit most parts. For the stock, heat is the best way to get it to come out, either heat it up with a hair dryer/heat gun, stick it in a black trash bag in the sun and just wipe it down periodically, or if you can fit it in, use an oven at a very low heat and just wipe it down every so often.

There's a stamp on the top of the receiver that says 1951 under a star. I'm in Canada so my fiancé and her family put money together to get me the rifle. It was advertised as Russian made and I don't really know how to determine factory of origin.

Thanks for the info too, that's roughly what I'm intending to do in order to clean out the cosmoline. Good to know I'm on the right track.
>>
>>28339656

The star is the Tula Arms Plant. So yes, it is a Russian SKS, made at Tula in 1951, two years before mine at the same plant.

Good to know! All the serials I could find were matching too, for what it's worth
>>

This shit is making me wish I had one.

But I have an AK....

Although it's not a slim, sexy Simonov...

Fuck...

Am i fucked?

Not entirely, the age of the cheap SKS is almost gone, but you can still find Chinese models for $300 in some places. They may look beat to shit but they'll still shoot great and make a good project gun if you wanted to work on the stock.
>>
>>28339729
you can get a really nice yugo from Classic Firearms for 429

Is there any reason to get an SKS if you own an AK? A local pawn shop has had one on the shelf for a couple months for like $300.

What do people use as a wood conditioner after baking or lengthy heating?
>>
>>28340419

I never put anything on mine, but I know some people use boiled linseed oil.

Apply a fresh coat of very thinned denatured alcohol/shellac.

I don't have a picture with jus my SKS. It's a Chinese type 56.

Any recommendations on sources for non tapcoshit stocks? I have a type 56 Norinco, but it's a pinned barrel. I kind of want to swap it out for a yugo beech wood stock, but I think the Yugos are threaded barrels?

Anyway, I really don't like the Chu wood. I'm in the process of refinishing it into a non-shit color, but I just don't like the quality of the wood. It's too "light" and I have doubts on how it will hold up innawoods.

My 1950 Tula. It "clicks" back and forth a few millimetres in the stock, so a kind guy on Facebook gave me a free Chinese stock. I'm probably going to sand the shitty finish off it to show off that sexy blonde Chu wood, throw on a vented gas tube and a scout mount/LER scope.
Not sure what I should do about fitting the blade bayonet in a spike slot. I was thinking
>Mark and dremel blade slot
>Find similar wood
>Pack, cut and glue around blade slot, sand to match
Does that sound right? Anybody else tried something similar?

Also, my rear sight is slightly canted. Can this be fixed?
>>
>>28341861
I lied, it's actually been about 2 weeks. waiting on some stuff to come in the mail before I head out to the range, including 1000rds of x39.
>>
>>28341192
Yeah, but these seem to all be Norinco stocks, which I think were all Chu wood. :( Was looking for a beech wood yugo stock.

Thanks though Anon, I appreciate it.
>>
How do you guys like the Monte Carlo stocks? I'm being sent a cheap one that someone bought and didn't like.

Got this one at cabelas for 1300. It's chambered in 5.7x28 though, that's why it was so pricey.
