Is a makarov a worthy carry piece? I know its heavy, and mag size leaves alot to be desired, but they are cheap and seemingly reliable.

Its a god damned bullet proof pistol. Tula makes ammo for 12-14 a box that is perfect reliability. You can't go wrong with a mak. Mines east German.
If you're buying one for self defense, get a CZ82. There is no reason to have the capacity of a 1911 in 9x18 makarov, so get the one with 12 rounds. Then replace the spring with a 19-pounder and shoot military pressure rounds (major manufacturer is buaffalo bore +p+).
I prefer cast lead, because there is debate of whether you want expansion (jhp) or penetration, but since it has polygonal rifling, you have to clean it more often after shooting to avoid lead buildup, which could lead to a catastrophic malfunction.

Carried one that I bought illegally when I was stationed in Germany 5 years ago. It was a good little pistol. I never had to draw it, but it was sufficiently accurate, easily concealed and durable enough that when I sold it before returning stateside, it was still in very good condition minus some holster wear.
I'm planning on buying one for stateside use, but mostly for the nostalgia. I like my M&P shield better.

I got mine as a Christmas present to myself and just took it to the range today for the first time (and took pic related). Took a chance on it since I'd never fired one before, but I have to say I like it. The sights are really difficult for me, but with some practice I think it'll work out. It's also just so damn sexy.

With a new extra power spring, the recoil is significantly less than a .380, with very little muzzle flip. Only downside is some people can't effectively manipulate heavy recoil springs. If you can, the gun is fantastic.

Have a $200 P-83 I got last year. Has been reliable as fuck, plan on buying some 9x18 XTP and trying that out.
Am considering carrying it but the lack of holster options has me looking at possibly getting a $300 mak.

Nah man, you have a double action pull and a heavy one at that, there is NO reason to have a safety on.
Plus, it's a slide mounted safety, so it's a bit of a reach meaning not and instantaneous draw/fire, which is what you need in a carry gun and what you HAVE in a Makarov if you just leave the safety off.
The most popular carry gun in the world doesn't even HAVE a manual safety (LCP).
Hell, you can't even be certain when it comes down to it you'll even switch off the safety.

Marschal's grips are great, I have them on mine as well.

Just got mine in from Top Gun Supply. Fucking unissued quality mang. Power is less than a regular 9mm, but comparing them out of an equal length barrel, the difference is neglible. The real disadvantage the round has is a lack of variety. +P rounds are like hens teeth and you can forget any notion of fancy boutique HP rounds. The heel mag is tricky at first, but you can put a key ring or some para-cord on it for a handy place to pull on. In all it is a rock solid gun that does exactly what it is designed to do.
