Japan didn't have the resources to make them useful then.
Missiles made them obsolete.
They couldn't fit in any US doctrine between then and now, nor would their abilities affect doctrine in any real way.
Moving toward the future, though, it's important to remember that nuclear subs are loud and nonnuclear subs are logistical nightmares.

SSBN aren't going to get conventional capabilities because their entire purpose it so do nothing until ordered to destroy the world.
SSGN are cool beans travel the world in the Octopus' garden, but a dedicated guided missile sub is unlikely and don't have tube and warhead limitations of an SSBN.
Even if you built the next boomer or boozer to serve as a VTOL/STOVL or even helicopter/tiltrotor dock on top of its duties it would be a failure.
Going back to the drawing board and looking for any possible use, maybe there are some hypothetical options. In reality no, not with the current or foreseeable future.
