On that same note, you comfortable with carrying a sheath on your belt, Leatherman Wave or Charge multitools, infinitely useful, best money I ever spent.
Poor? Go to Walmart and get a cheap Buck or CRKT brand knife, generally higher quality than Gerber.
Less poor? Kershaw makes great knives.
Intend to stay away from Gerber, they aren't terrible, but they are all over the board.
Rich boy? Benchmade or Spyderco. Expect to drop 100 plus, but they are exceptional quality.
Need a fixed blade for all your innawoods oper8ing? Becker BK7 or BK9 are really nice. The company Ontario makes really good military issue style knives like bayonets and such. However, if you are looking to do things like batoning wood for a fire, stay away from the bayonet or KABAR style knives, they eat up the batoning log with their false edges.
