My uncle owes me a rifle, so he's about to order me a ruger hawkeye. This gun will be for deer hunting btw. Maybe other small varmits. He has a scope we're going to put on it.

Not much to complain about with Ruger DESU. They make really good guns and their customer service is top notch.
I own a Gunsite Scout in .308, which is basically an M77 Hawkeye with a different stock and slightly modified barrel/receiver assembly. I love it.

I was thinking about getting one in .308 but I'm honestly lost in terms of what rifles are worth the money.
Budget is anywhere from 500-1000 for a rifle with scope.

.30/06 is a better round for elk than .308. You can easily find factory loads in the 200-220grn range and your average .30-06 can handle fucking hot loads
