Was the AR style charging handle a good design? Would it have been better if it used a more standard style charging handle like most other rifles?
It's an alright design, it keeps your hands away from the chamber during manipulation, doesn't reciprocate, and allows the weapon to have an easily usable dust cover, but it also means you cannot slam the bolt into battery normally, requiring a forward assist.
Side charging designs are more intuitive I think.

its what I hate most about the AR, wish it was left hand charging.

AR platform is a shit platform

Shits where eats, etc etc

It's a little strange at first, but once somebody is accustomed to using it, it hardly seems to matter. It's not like it slows down reloads or anything like that.

Pull an AR charging handle back.
Put a little upward pressure on it.
Feel the strain as the receiver and charging handle battle for dominance.
Return it back to the owner.

there are left charging ARs.
I also hate the standard charging handle.

this mostly
i like it, but i have been using ARs for years.
Top mounted charging handle is superior
AR-15 charging handle is shit
AR10 and early 15s had the handle inside the carryhandle, but because of shitswhereeats that was the hottest spot if left open for slot, so it was closed and handle moved to back of carryhandle.
>AR18 had proper cocking handle

no, fuck off
I really like the design and what it allows the rifle to do, but the factory charging handle feels cheap as fuck, I probably won't own an AR without an aftermarket handle.
