Thoughts on sporterized milsurp weapons?

I always thought it's a shame when you see a beautiful weapon and piece of history get turned into a polymer covered turd with an ugly Bushnell scope on it. Seeing shit get bubba'd is never fun.

It's usually a waste of time considering how cheap hunting guns are now. Doing it to rare weapons is tasteless.
>>
>>28318858
this. for the price of mutilating a historic weapon of war, you can just go buy a used Savage/Remshit/Mossman/Sako, or in same cases even a brand new one, and use it for hunting instead.
>>
It made sense in like 1952 when a milsurp Mauser or Arisaka would cost like 15-20% of what a decent hunting rifle would cost.
But now a even cheap milsurp like a re-arsenaled nugget costs like 150bucks, and you can get a solid used hunting rifle for 200 or 250.
Or you could get a low end new production rifle for like 300 bucks.

Sporterizing milsurps now is retarded.
All it does is destroy a piece of history and lower the value permanently.

I've got two moist nuggets and they're great rifles. Price has jumped in them in the middle of the states though. Had one for a year, at the time for $160, and just bought one for $190, which sadly was on the cheaper end of what most shops were willing to sell to me for.. I guess they're drying up in the middle of Kansas/Colorado/etc

Do not add scopes. Do not cut down stocks or barrels. Do not change the sights. Do not sand and refinish. Doing any of these things ruins all collector value. I don't care about "its my gun I can do what I want" FUCK YOU sell me your rifle and go buy a savage or something.
>>
>>28319130
What i dont care for them.
What if i really like the look and feel of a scope on a milsurp rifle.
>>
>>28319130
Besides it's only a 200$ or 350$ gun and its my money to waste.

>Be Finnish SVT
>Serve proudly
>Be bought by Globe Firearms
>Be mutilated and rechambered for .303 Brit, since that was a more common cartridge at the time
>Somehow wind up in my grandpa's hands
>Bring home a few durr, then sit innacloset for a few decades with little to no maintanence
>???
>Be given to me to restore
I'm gonna put it in a Scout configuration, once I find someone who can make the mount I want.
>>28319466
It was only one company, and they were known for that, apparently. Thankfully they only carved up about a thousand.
>>28319527
More common and cheaper in the years after WWII.
>>
>>28319607
wait a fucking second, so you're telling me you have a .303 Brit Fin SVT? Tell me moaarrr!!!
>>
>>28318858
>>28318882
this has not always been true, when most of these were bubba'd milsurp was a dime a dozen, and there was no concern about the history of something made in the millions that were in abundance

Not much else to say. It was one of two guns I inherited. It's very light, about half the weight of an SKS. The mag is altered, obviously, and they're known for chewing brass and ejecting it hard. Like, "I found my brass embedded in a tree" hard.
I refinished the stock, now I'm looking to see if the locking screw on the side from a proper SVT will work better than the odd tube of rolled metal it had. Then I'm going to have a mount that replaces the rear sight like pic related made and roll it in a Scout configuration with a good LER scope. Oh, and it needs a sling, and I may look into getting it accurized somehow.

Not much else I can tell you-it isn't ready to shoot yet.
>>
>>28319701
A few weeks ago I saw an m1941 Johnson rifle on GunBroker mutilated in a similar way just because some fudd wanted to put a scope on it. He also cut down the stock and barrel.
