Friend of mine was with the UN in Kosovo.
Apparently there was an issue with giant packs of wild dogs roaming the countryside killing livestock and attacking people.
My friend and another guy got sent out with local "hunters"(slavic rednecks with guns) to put an end to it.
They were issued ancient Remington 870s and was sent on a two week "mission" with the locals where they basically hiked across the countryside killing dogs. Every time they got to a new village the locals would offer tons of good food and moonshine. The locals would also refuse to let them camp in tents so they'd be invited in to spend the night with families.
According to him it was the best two weeks he spent in the military, and when they got back their company CO complimented the two men on their good work and said that they'd helped build up mutual trust with the locals, and that he'd talked with village elders that were all overjoyed. That same CO later recommended them both for promotions. All that for wandering the countryside drunkenly shooting dogs and spending the nights in villages getting shitfaced on moonshine while eating smoked meats.

Had a nice dog that ran around the FOB and barked at the non white people on the base. (Mexican looking guy got ribbed by everyone because the dog thought he was an Afghani and would bark at him).
Anyway one night the dog is hiding under some benches. When we finally manage to get it to come out and find that someone dumped a glow stick on him and freaked him out.
Now I will admit it was funny, but still the poor dog was traumatized by it.
We spared that dog from the purge when we had to kill all the animals on camp. Round up as many of the dogs and cat that we could, put the cats in sand bag and shotgunned them, tied the dogs to spikes and then headshot them once they laid down to wait.
Never though that I was that guy. Not 'That Guy'. But that guy that would be fine if he had to go and shoot like 50 camp pets. But I guess I was.
Still we spared the dog that got glow sticked, by chaining it up to a chunk of concrete on the other side of the wire and kept him there for 2 days while the great purge took place. Who know that barking at Mexicans could save your life?

I was stationed at Camp Zama. There were cats that hung around on base. I don't know if they were strays or someone's pet.
There was one cat that routinely went in and out Gate 4. It just walked up to the gate and the Japanese guards would open it up for the cat.
Some other cats liked to hang out in my barrack's parking lot. To make sure there were no cats under my car when I started and moved. I kept cat good in the car. I would then put some cat food down a few cars away. So all the cats would be out of the way.
There are also these huge crows/ravens on the base. Noisy fuckers sqwaking at 0430 when the sun rises. Any of them that were too close to a car in a parking lot. They were suddenly jumped by two or three cats and then dragged under a car.

I was on a Marine patrol base in Sangin. I wasn't allowed to have a dog. I wasn't even allowed to wear white socks, or a boonie cover inside the patrol base. My command could've njp'd me for having her for a day. Someone was wounded every single day. There were more concerns to deal with than processing my dog back to the states, like supplying us with ammunition, explosives and returning our casualties gear/belongings back stateside.
