Is an M9 a good gun first gun for someone who's never fired one before?
M9/Glock 19/43

I don't see why not, the military chose it to be used by the stupidest people imaginable who aren't expected to have had any firearms experience. Just make sure your hands are big enough to wield it before buying it.
there are better, there are worse. unless you have baby hands you should have no problem using it.
Go to a range that rents firearms. Find one that peaks your fancy. Rent. Shoot. Dislike it? Repeat.

This is the right answer for every handgun choice.
If u are really worried about getting used to shooting just rent a .22 and then try higher calibers.

M9 or a P226.
I have a P226 and it seems perfect.
I've never shot an M9 but once I held one at an LGS and it seemed small for a "full size" pistol.
But it seemed comfortable and well balanced, not heavy either.
It will be my next purchase for sure.
Pretty easy to shoot one decently, it's heavy enough and fun to shoot. You can do a lot worse.
Plus it looks pretty cool and has a bit of a history as a movie and military gun so people like it.
I have a 92G I paid $200 last year and it's been great. I had a 92F before that as well that I liked.
