I just acquired pic related, and I want to change some things to get the best out of my rifle. So, how can you make the ptr 91 a better gun? How hard are the mods, and how expensive?
>>
Match trigger from hk and an optic of your choosing.

IThere's a few out there.

- You could try to get a trigger job done or a match trigger drop-in.

- Some people replace the plastic trigger housing with surplus steel ones.

- If you got an old button-only mag release model you could look into installing a paddle mag release that some people do with surplus parts or the tac-latch.

- The extended charging handle is a good one which makes pulling the handle a lot easier.

- Recoil buffer if you think the rifle kicks a little too much.

- barrel muzzle if you don't like the design

- Furniture if you prefer something else.

... I have owned an A3R for a few years now and don't see the point of most modifications people do with these guns. I have only bought a surplus sling and an extra mag for mine. Haven't decided on an optic yet. The money is better spent on ammo in my opinion.
>>
>How can I make the PTR a better gun?
By selling it and buying an FAL
>>
Cool, thanks for the input. The thing I'm considering most is the trigger job. That seems like what would affect the function and accuracy of the rifle the most.
>>
>>28299968
Check out HKparts.net and RobertRTG.com

There are lots of mods and they're all easy, however they can get expensive due to supply and command.

Go shoot it a bit before you start buying a bunch of parts for it; get to know if you like it or not. See how easily you can access the controls. For instance, I thought I'd get a converted steel lower for mine until I handled a C91, and found that because of the thicker plastic grip over the steel frame my thumb couldn't reach the selector when I had the rifle aimed at the target.

OP, I recommend getting a wide hand guard if you plan to do any mag dumping, the slim ones are nice, but get pretty fucking hot after a couple of mags. Plus, you can get a bipod for it if you can ever find one at a reasonable price.

Why though? You don't need a dozen mags. You don't even need a single extra one. If someone deems that they only want one extra mag for their shooting, what's so wrong about that? It's their prerogative. I'd assume you autists would prefer it that way since that mean more mags for the rest of you.

Because it's just surprising, that's all. They're probably the cheapest surplus mags ever. I wouldn't even accept money from someone who just wanted a single mag, because they obviously need it more than I do.

Picatinny rail for mounting a scope. Be wary of the length of the scope. Anything over 12" is a no-go due to interference with the charging handle. Different brands will run you for different amounts. You could also purchase a set of rings that use the claw mount.
Easy to install, just make sure to torque evenly and use loctite.

Replace flash hider with compensator and improved buffer for recoil mitigation. This costs about $90 and $150 respectively. Getting the original flash hider off takes considerable effort, the latter is fairly easy.

Install a bipod. Yankee Hill Machine makes a small, threaded swivel stud you can buy for like $3, then you just need a corresponding nut from your local hardware store. You can epoxy the nut into place in the forend, install the stud, and then mount a bipod. The mounting accessories cost like $10 overall. You could also buy the aluminum forend and mount it using the modular rail if you want an easier approach, but it is much more expensive.

Buy a surplus strap for roughly $20.

If you want to, you can spray your stock and forend. Just prep the surfaces properly and something like Krylon can form an extremely solid bond. Incredibly easy to do, and adds a personal touch.

If you have baby hands, you might like the paddle mag release.

A port buffer would also be a good purchase the PTR munches brass.

Wood stock and handguard. I got mine from HK parts. The recoil spring and buffer in my surplus stock was fucking trash, so I recommend just removing the wood stock from the surplus back plate, and using the PTR's.

FYI if you do go this route, the buffer in the surplus stock is NOT just a drop in. It is attached from the other side as well, so just take the butt plate off the stock and unscrew it from the rear as well.

A bit heavier, but god is it beautiful. The condition of yours might be shit, so if you want a little DIY project, refinishing the stock is another option. You can go the lazy(bad) route of just bleaching it, but i recommend using a stripper and restaining/finishing the wood.

Another thing: If you just bought it and hate the trigger, you might want to put a few hundred rounds through it before switching it out. When I first bought it, numerous people complained about the trigger. This past Sunday, the same people had all changed their tune. Definitely smooths out over 5-600 rounds.

For clarity: I have a PTR-32 (hence the AK mags you see in the pics above).

I have some before pics that I'll post after work. Really it was just darker/rougher.

Also, if anyone does buy surplus wood and wants to refinish, feel free to ask any questions. There are some things I wish I did differently.

I swapped the factory furniture for a surplus German set. The factory hand guard did not have a heat shield. Plus it looks cool. For $15 why not.

I bought a RTG 104 mag beater pack and came out with 102 good mags. Sold half for the cost of the 104.

I got a model with a welded rail so I cannot speak for the different claw mounts. I put a PA 5x prism scope on mine. BDC seems to work well.

Then I put a RTG clipped and pinned steel lower on. This is aesthetics only.

I've read some good things about them. People were buying em here in Maryland because it was an easy way to bypass the "NO PTR-91s or G3 Clones" until the gun was explicitly banned a few months ago.

If they're legal in your state though, I'd just save up another $200 and get a 100% brand new PTR-91, instead of dealing with surplus barrels and bolt carriers etc.

Sometimes it really hurts to be retarded. I'm gonna send it on in, I could probably get away with buying a new bolt head but I'm sure that'll just give me more problems in the end.
Feels bad, man. That thing's fucking fun to shoot with a bipod.

General consensus is yes, Century has a reputation for some pretty janky work, and really bad welding.

Purely anecdotal, but while I've never handled a CETME, 2 of the 3 C93's that I've held had visibly canted sights, and horrible welds, which was enough to turn me off to century's roller lock guns for good.

Is your cocking handle flopping around loose? I accidentally forgot to put the spring for it back in after a disassembly like a retard, and had that same problem. The bolt can't travel all the way if it's loose.
Maybe yours broke or something.

Nope, it even cycles manually just fine.
I honestly have no clue what it could be, maybe a headspacing issue somehow. I'm seeing some slightly bulging primers.

Nigger that's not even a part to an HK gun.

I've got that rifle. The c308. It's CETME surplus parts paired with a ptr receiver. My first 308 but it's badass to handle and shoot. Lighter than my dad's m1a. It'll accept G3 parts. Alpine green furniture on mine. C308 doesn't have a heat shield so a surplus one for like 10 bucks is advised. Eats Steel and works in the cold.

I'd save up.

I always imagined a SHTF scenario would only end in a firefight if you got cornered in a house or something. I'm picturing a Bosnia-style SHTF...
>>
>>28323608
>cornered in a house in Bosnia
They would burn you out or blow up the house. Honestly you're more apt to survive with food and water alone, having a gun doesn't necessarily increase your chances or survival. SHTF in Bosnia wasn't just running around getting in firefights, if that was your objective you didn't live long at all, you'd be lucky to make the first year.

That is a 10/22 bolt release/catch
Fucking annoying in the stock form, that mod has made my life easier.

I know sir. What I meant to convey was firefights were super rare, and not a good idea at all. In fact guns and ammo are valuable to trade (along with medical supplies). I love the idea of a SHTF that /k/ has been selling. But I know it would not be gunfights and killing bandits 24/7

Is a carry handle a worthwhile investment? I plan on getting a port buffer.

I think I may just grab a wood stock and hope for some more handguards to come in sometime in the future.

They are West-germans and the cammo is a Splintertarn smock worn by the SS during WW2 some units got them as cold(war)weather clothing.

True
>the cammo is a Splintertarn
False, but close. Not the exact war-time pattern, pic-related is the postwar pattern in that anon's pic
>>28324115
>smock worn by the SS
False, the SS and the Heer had their own separate camo patterns, that is not an SS pattern camo.
