poorfag here
I got a 30-06 Savage Axis I need to zero but I don't want to spend too much money. Is a cheap bore sighter worth it or should I just throw fmjs downrange instead? I'm looking to go first time deer hunting next year.
>>
Even with the laser bore sight thing, you still need to fire a box of ammo through the rifle just to get it zeroed and make sure it stays there for a couple shots. Especially if it's new and you've never fucked around with this rifle before. Those things are for getting you on target, I wouldn't consider them precise enough to zero with.
>>
>>28296314
You can do the exact same thing for free by pulling the bolt and manually bore sighting the rifle when you get to the range.
>>
>>28296344
I wish my rifle came with iron sights but most hunting rifles just don't have them. It is difficult to sight a 30-06 without going to a gun range.
>>
Why would you zero it now for next year's hunt? It'll lose its zero by then and you'll have to go do it again anyways.
>>
>>28296314
it takes as little as 5 rounds to zero a rifle
>>
>>28296379
Just for practice. I barely shot the gun.
>>
>>28296359
This
It'll get you on paper, and you can take it from there

>>28296379
How?

Fudd logic.

7/10, you got replies.
>>
>>28296314
Spend that money on ammo.

Pull out your bolt and bore sight it like a normal person by looking through the bore using your eye sight.

Then shoot the gun at 25 yards on a large target. Adjust the scope so it is dead-on at 25 (should take maybe 3 shots if you're an idiot) and then sight it in at your desired range.

Buying a tool to do this is retarded since no matter how much you spend on bore sight, you'll still need to put it on paper.

Waste of money....just learn to hold a fucking a group
>>
>>28296379
No it wont, unless it gets banged up as fuck between now and then

Takes 3 shots to zero a rifle. Google sniper 101 zero to find a video.

>>
>>28296314
a cheap bore sight will get you close on paper. Different ammo will group differently, and 99.9% of cases it will not be in the same place the bore sight says.
>>
>>28297307
>implying a temperature change will permanently fuck over your gun
The only case I can think of is if you chuck it into a furnace or fire. Metal won't (or at least, absolutely /shouldn't/) deform significantly for a temperature change of +- ~10deg C.

+1 for this.

Also
Determine maximum point blank range
Get a ballistic calculator
Determine closet zero
Get a decent rest, you don't have to pay $200 for a lead sled, but you still need a decent rest.
Sight in at closets zero, then shoot at the longest zero. To confirm ballistic calculator numbers.

dont get the bore sight, take out the bolt stand a foot or so back and look down the bore while aiming at something far away thats small and precise and then zero your scope to that, that gets a rough estimate zero close enough and then go to a range and shoot a couple rounds to fine tune it

Something wrong with 30-06? It's the most popular sporting caliber for a reason.

When I go hunting, I only take my 30-06 or 308. Why? Is it because they have great ballistics with amazing knock down power capable of taking any game you're going to meet in North America? No, though they do. Is it because ammo is dirt cheap? No, even though it is.

It's because of ammo availability. About 10 or so years ago, I got invited to a friend's deer camp. I was so excited because up to that point I'd only hunted public land. I get my truck packed up and make the three plus hour drive to BFE NC up toward the VA border. I'm unpacking my stuff and, what's that? I forgot AMMO! I'm SUCH A DUMBSHIT!!!!!

But you know what? Three other guys had plenty of 30-06 ammo to share. If I would have brought a more esoteric caliber, not only would no one else have had some, but I probably would have had to drive at least a couple of hours to the nearest sporting goods store to get some.

Just saying, bro. 30-06 is okay in my book.

>Is a cheap bore sighter worth it

Don't bother. I got a cheep one off Sportsman's Guide years back and the laser isn't visible in any light outside of a dark basement.
>>
Also, fuck lead sled. I made a couple of nice shooting bags with an old pair of jeans, my wife's sewing machine, and 10 pounds of dry rice. It doesn't look super pretty or anything, but it works fine and wasn't fucking 35 bucks
>>
>>28296314
OP you don't even need to spend money on a ''bore sighter" to zero in your rifle.

You do if you can't take the bolt out of your gun and look down the bore.

I could just take an old t shirt and fill it with some pebbles from the nearby elementary school to save myself 55 dollars.

A Savage should be bore sighted from the factory if bought with the scope as a package
>>
>>28296412
poor people do not pay for quality scopes or mounts

expecting your amazon scope and chinese rings to be in the same location a year later is optimistic
>>
>>28302621
A Weaver Kaspa literally costs 100 bucks. It is Chinese but it will still hold zero
