Need some help deciding, /k/, just turned 18 in Florida and wanted to go out and treat myself to my first rifle (since pistols are restricted until over 21 years of age). I'm trying to decide between an M1 Garand bought online or an AR-15 bought in-store, since I only have money to buy one.

I love the look of the M1, and I'd like to have one that was actually used in WWII, but at the same time the AR-15 seems more versatile, since I can change out the upper receiver and have an entirely different weapon and caliber in an hour. Also, never shot 30-06 before, but I have shot 5.56 and .223 so I'm familiar with the handling.

Any opinions on what should I go for?

What is intended use/ purpose of the rifle you wish to purchase?
>>
>>28295667
Garand first. AR's will always be floating about, and can be built piece at a time over weeks/months.
>>
Garands are cool and only go up in value. I built my garand so I didn't care about resell value.
Like he said.. What do you want. If it's going to the range.. The m1 is expensive to feed. Mine is 308 so it is cheaper to feed plus I was reloading my own for while. At 18 I don't think you will have the time to commit to reloading, or funds to feed your m1.
If you want to throw a shit ton of parts at it.. Go with the ar

It would be for going down to the range for target shooting, yeah. The expense of the ammunition is a factor, I suppose.
>>

If it's your only rifle and you're not going muh 'shtf rifle' both would be fine yeah .308 cheap shit is about .60 cents a round vs 5.56 .33 cents a round but hey i still love my FAL

Look at the price of 3006 and see if your ok with that. 308 for my m1 is like 11$ a box and that's super fucking cheap. On a good day I may shoot all 4 of those boxes Or more.
I dont feel guilty shooting my ar at paper since its like 5-7$ a box.

M1 Garand. I had a chance to buy one a few years ago, but I had just bought a gun 30 minutes before it popped up on a gun trader group on Facebook. My buddy ended up buying it, but it was a steal, I haven't seen one for less than $1200 ever since.

tl;dr you'll always be able to find AR-15's, buy the rare gun first.

CMP nigga

Get a Garand from CMP, but don't wait too long to assemble an AR.
>>

That's actually something I'm concerned about, with all the shit the left's been pushing regarding gun control. I want to get in on the ground floor before they start outlawing it.
>>
>>28296101
ARs are safe years to come, man. Nothing will be able to touch them until at least Democrat Congress + Democrat President, or totally Democrat controlled Congress. Nothing can happen til 2018 at the earliest
>>
Off topic question, how good are the Eddystone 1917s? I can get a good+ condition one from my LGS for 400 before tax
>>28296101 If you are worried about legislation for ARs, just buy a stripped anderson lower and assemble one later, they can be had for sub 50 bucks online if you search for them

Outlawing isn't what should be your concern.
>>
>>28296162
Really? Any sites where I could potentially find one of those?

Do it, or at the least give me directions to your LGS

I would avoid an Internet purchase of an old gun like that.

Anything you can't finger fuck first shouldn't be bought.
>>
>>28295667
The Garands don't have a lot of kick that's a non issue. Issue is ammo, and you can either buy a big box of Priv Garand ammo or get the garandgear.com ported gas plug. Garands are a magical beast, so I would buy that first.

If you want an AR, just get a lower right now and build up later.

>I haven't seen one for less than $1200 ever since.
>mfw remember walking into big 5 with my dad in 1990 and seeing an entire rack of m1s for a max of 200 each
>mfw those days are long gone
>mfw I'll never own an m1

Anon, do not make my mistake. If you have a chance to get your hands on an M1, do so now. You will regret not getting it. I had an opportunity several years ago to get one and I passed it up. There will be many many year of regret. Your art of smyoi don't.

If you in a good money situation, buy the garand, buy a stripped lower and slowly build your AR out over a year.

Bought mine at a gunshow the day after Sandhooker for 650 with a bayonet.

>everyone was looking at ARs and AKs
>ignoring a table full of good priced and great condition milsurp
>>
>>28295980
Good thing the price of .308 is irrelevant to feeding a Garand.
