requesting navyanon's story about the ENTERPRISE leaving port without finishing maintenance, and sucking up a sandbar that fucked up the reactors cooling system?

i saw this in the humor thread, showed it to my dad (retired navy) he says he was there. any info on this pic? dates/ location?
>>

Damnit, at work on my phone and don't have the greentext. It was my story, crazy shit. Late '05. Don't have time to retype it, but let me know if you have questions, and I'll try to get to you.
>>
>>28295134
I'll keep bumping it until you get home if that's cool? just talking about the old days withmy dad, he was on enterprise on and off from 88-92, mentioned your story and many dadlulz were had. i told him i'd try to find it again. any funny/nostalgic pics you have would be wicked also. surprised you even responded lol, 3rd post no less
>>
>>28295158
Not too busy here, just takes a while to respond. I've got a whole file of nukelulz at home from that POS. I still have stupid fucking dreams where I end up back in the Navy on that tub. I can't wait for them to turn it into razor blades.
>>
Can we include antman into the story?
>>
>>28295198
he was comms repair guy, swears he and his guys invented caller id on that ship. they attached a light to their phone connected to the conduit running from their chief's office. if the light didn't turn on, they didn't answer

Retyped over lunch

The Saga of Muddy Sunday, retyped

Navy terms changed for clarity's sake
Also, this was 10 years ago, so there're probably mistakes. Sue me.
>be new guy on USS Enterprise, 2005
>ship is (once again) in Newport News shipyard
>ship designed to last for 30 years
>45ish at this point
>something's ALWAYS broken
>first (and only) carrier of its kind, for a reason
>instead of 2 properly sized reactors, it has 8 small ones
>overcomplicated, undermanned, and past its service life
>repairs are taking too long, as always
>>shipyard workers are only paid if they are working on a ship
>>whole area is insanely poor
>>therefore, repairs NEVER finish on time
>Pentagon decides to tell Captain (CO) to pull out early, go on sea trials, and finish remaining work pierside in Norfuck.
>Reactor Officer (RO), aka Crazy Joe Creed, who has never left an ass unkissed in his career, tells the CO "no problem"
>>most likely fellated him as well
>Chief Engineer (ChEng) tells CO no way, too much work incomplete, channel not safe
>CO says too bad
>channel down the James River gets dredged and mapped every 2 years
>hasn't been done in 1.9 years
>ChEng calls Pentagon from the flight deck, tells them he can SEE the sandbars in their path from up there
>Pentagon says pull out anyway; the cost per day to stay in the shipyard is just too high
>>shipyard bills the Navy for steam, water, super pure water, electrical, and sewage
>so, the day comes
>stand 2am-7am watch before scheduled pullout
>get off watch, go to my rack, go to sleep
>>
>>28295897
>tugs push boat around into the river, and head back to Norfuck
>boat putts along for a bit
>Announcing circuit kicks in

>"Loss of vacuum, #? turbine generator condensor, casualty assistance team respond "
>stillnotmyjob.jpg
>"Emergency Shutdown (SCRAM), all 8 reactors, all nuclear trained personnel muster in the Aft Bomb Transfer Area"
>guessthat'smyjob.jpg
>roll out of bed, fling on coveralls and boots, head to the mess deck area where everyone's shoving tables out of the way to assemble 2 departments
>find out ship sucked up a sandbar, just as ChEng predicted
>every seawater intake that was sucking in cool river water to cool plant equipment has clogged
>no way to cool and condense steam, therefore no way to pull steam through turbines
>so, the power goes out
>4 massive V-16 emergency diesel generators are in place for just such an emergency
>1 starts.
>just 1.
>they get another going hours later, but the other 2 never play a role
>guess what some work was that the ChEng worried about?
>boat's drifting, dead stick, down the James River, no control.
>Tugs are "racing" back (tugs are not fast)
>only available power is used for the radios, announcing circuit, and reactor coolant pumps
>ChEng saw it coming, so plans were in place, and there was excess reactor cooling capacity available
>>steam generator levels were kept abnormally high, so steam could be bled off and lost without worry
>this keeps the reactors safe, but doesn't do much for creature comforts
>no ventilation in the plants whatsoever
>engine room must be manned during emergency shutdown
>temperature hits 160° in the uppermost level, with >100% humidity
>it actually rained inside an aircraft carrier
>stay times were 5 minutes out of every hour, then you were out and guzzling water
>>
>>28295914
>one Senior Chief who refused to leave his post was wrestled out by his men, up 2 flights of 70° stairs with handrails too hot to touch
>they got him to Medical after he stopped sweating and got crazy. >Medical made him ride the silver rocket
>>they shoved a thermometer up his ass
>eventually the tugs arrive, and the ship is towed back to Norfuck
>power is supplied by shore cables, ventilation is restored
>the work of clearing the condensers begins
>mechanics end up down in the 100° engine rooms opening up inspection ports to scrape out dirty river bottom
>the engine room just REEKS like a pier at low tide
>bilges fill up with saltwater and mud
>they're pulling out dead fish, clams, stingrays, etc etc
>one group even pulled out a live 2' shark and released it into the bilge, b/c lulz
>because of how HARD the day was on all the poor (nonnuclear) sailors, the galley decides to serve an extra special meal
>lobster and crab legs
>mess decks end up reeking with the same stench as the 100° rainy engine rooms
>nubs like me are sent to the McDonald's at the end of the pier to bring back food that doesn't make you want to puke
>>
>>28295920
>eventually, the Pentagon decides to get into the blame game, and attack the ship's leadership
>you know, because a vessel with 8 reactors just lost the ability to intake cooling water while on an inland waterway within the continental United States
>fortunately, the ChEng kept detailed records of every mail, email, and phone call he made
>dead accurate assessment of what would happen saved his ass, and led the Pentagon to drop the matter,
>lest they look like politically motivated assholes who care more about counting money than they do about reactor safety.
>which they are.

I want to say he kept his job, but I can't imagine he advanced much after that. I don't really know/remember, but the only thing worse for your career than an incident like that would have to be telling everyone it was coming and being right about it. Officers are extremely political, and he was only an O-5.

If anything, it just gives us the original, but as said in >>28295934 he was thoroughly intoxicated when posting the original.
>>
>>28296067
>He seems like a good man.
He was pretty bro-tier. Worked his people to the bone, but made sure they got a fair deal, and got them extra time off whenever he could (which wasn't often, but he actually tried, and that counts). He went toe to toe with Security more than a few times when they gave his lower enlisted people shit about their uniforms being dirty/greasy/cut etc. Engineering worked just as hard as, if not harder than, Reactor, but they actually got some fucking respect for it.

The RO, on the other hand, Joe Creed, was just the single biggest piece of shit I ever served under, and he had some stiff competition in that regard. He had us break secondary containment on a reactor compartment in the North Atlantic in winter to replace an instrument, just b/c it had neva bin dun befo. There's a reason for that, asshole, it's shipyard work that should have been done pierside by people who knew WTF they were doing, not ad-libbed by ship's force. But he was leaving soon, and wanted it in his resume. He also let airwing commanders (O-5s vs his O-6) come down and take pictures of the open reactor compartment on their personal cameras, and told them to go ahead and show it to anyone they wanted (hint: those pictures would all be classified Secret), just to score bro points.

Reminds me of an anecdotal story about a nuke enlisted man who got so bored he decided he he was going to start poking holes in the rules.

Stapled together a uniform out of manuals and wore it on watch, because there was not a rule expressly forbidding him from doing so. Went all the way up to the captain, who laughed and told him he was cute. But that he was making a rule, and if he did it again he'd have his guts for garters

Ahh, but not Navy, and not Enterprise, I'd wager.

Enterprise was a strategic platform, not a tactical one, and was the only carrier available. The way things were in the Army do not really provide a good frame of reference.

Wikipedia entry of the event. Kinda sparse.

>2005 saw the ship in for another routine shipyard overhaul at Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. Departing the dock after this yard period, Enterprise ran through a sand bar causing all eight reactors to shutdown, leaving the ship adrift on emergency power for nearly three hours before she was tugged back to her pier at Norfolk Naval Base. It took approximately three days for the ship's nuclear machinists to clear her condensers of river mud.

Unrelated to the Enterprise, but related to the USN.

Was watching a video a few years ago on youtube, had a young Marine SGT being interviewed on women in the Navy. The Marine explains that he was on a RIB returning to his ship (possibly a LHD) during rough seas. He explained that he had to time the run up the swell to the wet deck lest he gets caught under the prop and crushed (I'm Army; no idea what the deck for amphib docking at the stern is called).
In his words:
>"...you have to time your run, or you'll end up underneath the boat when it rises with the swell; the boat will come back down with the wave and crush your boat and this will kill you..."
>"...you have to get your boat on the deck and let the man up front throw the rope. Bear in mind that the water drains from the wet deck as the ship experiences the swell. If you don't time your run right and tie the RIB off quick enough, the swell will drag your boat out of the deck, flip it in the sea underneath the props, the stern will come down crush your boat and this will kill you."
As the story goes;

>Sergeant commanding the RIB times his run correctly
>RIB enters the wet deck
>the man on the bow throws a mooring line
>woman attempts to secure the line
This woman was apparently a well-known sack of shit and had previously boasted "JUST BECAUSE I'M A WOMAN DOESN'T MEAN I CAN'T DO IT" when asked if she was up to the task of securing the line, which you need to be fairly strong to do.
>woman can't hold onto the line
>lets it go, pretty much sealing the SGT to certain death
>RIB starts to slide out the wet deck with the swell
>SNCO supervising on the wet deck races forward, grabs the line and digs in his heels on the railing
>manages to hold the line just as the RIB was about to fall out of the wet deck
>RIB secured, no pers lost
>woman beasted for being a piece of shit
>end result is
"JUST BECAUSE I'M A WOMAN DOESN'T MEAN I CAN'T DO IT.

Has anyone else seen this? I've been searching for it.

Ugh. Kicker is, your cousin probably had legal authority over that dumbass orificer at the time. If it's his watchstation, then it's his watchstation, and the list of people with authority over him, with regards to that specific duty, is very short, and very high ranking. Technically, that pilot probably could have been court martialed for ignoring your cousin.

well when he punched him, on the other hand, that's probably a bit too far.

the proper way is to probably arrest him or get his leadership involved.

I know I'm late to the party but thank you for posting this, going to give me and my USN retired uncle and CG cousin something to talk about tomorrow. My uncle worked aboard subs in the 70's and 80's and is full of snafu stories, wouldn't surprise me if he's already heard of this one. Will 3rd person greentext some stories he relates to me if I can

it still blows me away that F-4's were used by the Navy for as long as they were. Had to have been like owning a Ford Galaxy to drive and park on streets in New York City
>>
>>28309899

the F-14 flew over Vietnam, and the F-15's not much newer than that.

hopefully that puts the "4 GEN IS GOOD ENOUGH 5 GEN FOR FAGS A-10 FOREVER" in perspective.

oh I know, just seems like the F-4 was much less pliable and easily stuffed into overhead compartments, so to speak

Fuck yeah, Navy story time:

>chillin in AVR (where everyone gets their flight deck physicals and flight physicals done)
>month five of deployment, pretty sick of shit at this point
>1MC bellows out "MEDICAL EMERGENCY, MEDICAL EMERGENCY. MEDICAL EMERGENCY IN COMPARTMENT 3-74-2-L. AWAY, MEDICAL RESPONSE TEAM. ALL PERSONNEL NOT INVOLVED STAND CLEAR. PATIENT IS NOT AMBULATORY."
>Sheeeeit, someone probably did a swan dive down into a magazine or tumbled down the stairs
>We grab O2, stretchers, Zoll machine (to shock 'em back to us if need be)
>Haul ass to the forward messdecks, pushing all the FSA bitches out of the way
>Make it down to the patient
>see a fat chick crying on a broken chair
>ask her where the emergency is
>she says she's the emergency
>ask her what's wrong
>tells us her period cramps are so bad she couldn't climb up the ladderwell in time to get in line for sick call
>mfw

I actually left the scene to go back to medical and defuse. My Chief approached me later and asked me why I thought it would be okay to leave during a medical emergency. My response was that she wasn't a medical emergency, but I was very close to making her an actual casualty. That was the only time I received a counseling chit that entire underway, and it was totally worth it.

Epilogue: the fat bitch ended up getting kicked out for being a Suicide Sally and not being able to hack it in V-2, of all places.

Another medical story, for shits n giggles:
>underway on the USS Trashcan
>niggas be droppin like flies from viral gastroenteritis
>we're seeing shitloads of people everyday from dusk until dawn
>dropping IVs and Zofran (anti-nausea med) like there's no tomorrow
>niggas be callin medical emergency for this shit
>justfuckmysleepup.jpg
>chill-ass MM1 comes up from reactor spaces
>explains that he's only been puking, no diarrhea yet
>aight
>give him oral Zofran, tell him that if he can stomach it, we'll give him more and make him SIQ for a day or so
>he can't stomach it
>leans over to puke into bucket I've politely provided him
>between heaves, he mumbles something
>dudewhat
>he stammers out "I SHIT MYSELF"
>chill-ass MM1 threw up so hard he shit himself
>all aboard the IV train!
>two bags of sodium chloride later, his color has returned and he's ready to go back to his rack

I ran into him later while doing that ESWS crap and he signed off everything he could without even mentioning the incident. I guess he was just grateful.

A lot of the times those people are the same ones that squeak by in boot camp and "A" School, then make it to the fleet and look for any fucking way of getting out of work, up to and including getting knocked up.

I consider it a form of malingering, but who the fuck is going to listen to an E-5 in the age of political correctness when he argues that women getting pregnant on sea duty is the same as someone shooting themselves in the foot?

jesus christ that's not what I'm saying, it just amazes me, given how space efficient today's carrier aircraft are, that something so bulky was used as effectively as it was. That's it. I'm not saying one thing is superior to the other, I'm not debating shit. I am >>28309899 btw

The pizza hut is a step up, but the staff there are horrible. They give zero fucks.

C9 and devary court is usually a better place to go on base. Five guys, subway, decent sushi place.
