Why is Brazil's military so nonexistant?

They're the 7th largest economy but their main fighter is F-5Es from the fucking 70s
>>
>>28294569

When your country is a shit hole, its hard to have the nationalism to defend it.

Brazil literally is only good for liveleak videos, and ladyboys if youre into that sort of thing.
>>
They're buying Gripen (E's I think) and they'll have them before 2020. Just 36 of them for a start but I imagine if they like them they'll buy more
>>
>>28294569
Because basically every president since 1994 hates the Armed Forces for their action during the military dictatorship, and pure and simple revenge.
>>
>>28294593
basically this, the right wing, that suposedlly would argue for a bigger military expense is inexpressive and all the government is a bunch of gun-grabbers

>When your country is a shit hole, its hard to have the nationalism to defend it.

Russia seems to do just fine.

because no one in south america had anything even resembling a half-decent military for decades. the only stuff they had to deal with was drug runners

however venezuela has been buying up russian stuff with their petrodollars lately, which forced brazil to upgrade too

originally they were interested in the super hornet(with potential carrier applications), but after the us spying scandal they chose the gripen instead(not like it matters since all the critical components in the gripen are american anyways)
>>
>>28294638
Russians still think they're great because of their past achievements. Brazilians have nothing to be proud of.

Yepp. Its E's but they wish to lease a few D's direcly from the SwAF untill they get their E's.

It's Latin American country. Generally their armies have been geared up for keeping their own population line, properly oppressed and generals running the country. Due to democracy becoming a thing in last two or three decades armies tend to wither.

Generally no one in South America has had exceptionally strong military. As threat level has been low, everyone has skimmed on defense. Currently only Latin American country with respectable military is Chile. Argentina used to have until last junta got ousted after Falklands War.
>>
>>28294569
And a very non-existent space program.
>>
Because South America is, on a nation to nation level, quite peaceful.

This makes having a cutting edge military a luxury rather than a need. The worst rivalries between nations there are over sports. There isnt any "you killed my ancestors 200 years ago and this part of your current nation belongs to mine" to fuel a war.

Plus nobody in any SA nation wants a powerful military because of men like Pinochet, Noriega, Somoza, etc. To them "military" means "secret police" and they assosciate it with killing their own countrymen rather than protecting them.

There's a well-established rule with latin american countries:

The stronger the military, the more frequent the junta

Even in the European social-economic cultural zone (southern cone, southern brazil), they still have little experience with democracy

Military is mostly for dickwaving these days. But even Chile has a stronger airforce than Brazil.

Brazil is genuinely pathetic.
>>
>>28298119

The biggest military threat to Central and South America are cartels and insurgencies. Police can only do so much against criminal organizations that are as organized and well funded as a paramilitary.
>>
>>28297333
>A huge list of revolts and rebellions
>Apparently you did something in WW1 and WW2

It seems 90% of your wars either involve doing nothing or fighting off your own people.
>>
>>28297884
Russia really got BTFO didn't they?
>>
>>28298138

Dickwaving is what every military is for, that's what deterrence is.

Colombia has Venezuela to worry about, Chile has Peru, Bolivia and Argentina being pains in the dick, the chance of it ever coming to blows is relative to the pesos that go into a)keeping people happy to have their current flag and b)keeping weapons loaded. It's no cold war but it's not EUROPE YES! peaceful. The 'developed world' is the odd one out.
>>
>>28300262
Everyone got BTFO in dollar terms. Europe, Japan, India.
Russia has only dropped 4% in real terms, while Brazil has dropped 4.5%. The rest of the meaningful world has grown about 1-2%.

Only China has remained stronk, and that's actually hurting them because everyone is devaluing while China is at an all time relative yuan high.
>>
>>28300694
Chile-Argie relations aren't as bad as one thinks. Argentina has no ill will towards Chile, only thing that might be a hinderance to relations is their shit economy and retarded politicians (thank god Mauricio was elected, a Kichner puppet would worsen Argentina)

Bolivia might dick wave every so often but they have some respectable grievances. Plus Bolivia can't do shit about it since their armed forces are a mess.

But the big one for Chile is Peru. Ever since Chile won the war of the Pacific its relations with Peru have been like a roller coaster. Even when Chile was willing to give Bolivia some access to the sea Peru wanted to fuck up the process (because according to the peace treaty the three countries hammered out, it has to be involved in all treaties concerning the exchange of land). Recently there's been a row over alleged spying in Peru and relations are bad again. That in turn with Peru modernizing its armed forces makes Chile more weary about them than the other two countries.

Im not totally caught up with South American political news, so if any Chilebros are willing to either correct me or give a more in depth explanation then by all means

Chilel here.

It is true that relations are rocky with Peru, the last Hague court resolution that shaved off a triangular chunk of our previous sea territory to them was generally a shit deal for both sides, on ours, we lost a LOT of fishing and comerce traffic, on theirs, it not only does not fulfill their initial ambition to project sovereignity on a perfectly square area from their coast, it also spent their only internationally acceptable means of achieving it. The Peruvians more or less openly express their desire to get Arica back and will passive-aggressively do whatever they can to facilitate it on the off chance that the possibility ever becomes realistic, though people there are content with remaining Chilean and there's nothing suggesting that could change any time soon.

the thing that Peru is contesting now is a land triangle that runs a kilometer or two of coast in from the border we recognize. The borders are set by lines running from landmark to landmark and the last one before the sea is a nearby bridge. They claim that the line goes from the bridge to a point south from where we do, it's not a big chunk of land, it's not even a good beach sector or fit for a port, but it's gotten to the point there's been incidents there. We had some watchtowers with grunts built inside the triangle that made them throw a bitch fit in the early 00's. This year, a bunch of doofs showed up there and they claimed they were civilians protesting up until pictures showing them with shitty militia uniforms and rifles surfaced. I haven't heard any more but that probably means things haven't calmed down.

in general my country is more concerned with internal affairs, a metric fuckton of corruption cases getting uncovered and a general sentiment of outrage since we're the one place down here that doesn't ROUTINELY has this stuff happen. Damage control in full swing, can't look bad to foreign investors or our economy will nosedive for good.

Oh i've heard what happened in Chile (writing in english so the other guys can understand hueon). My family is originally from there so occasionally I get news from there. Last I heard La Gordi's son was given a high position in a company when he had no experience there.

I forget what happened recently though.

Any news on whether La Gordi has made any moves to get rid of the tax from copper sales that goes directly to the armed forces? I heard about it last year but haven't heard about it since then.

I assume you're from Santiago?

Brazilian Marines are receiving Marine hand me down AAV7A1's and are getting them refurbished by BAE.

http://www.janes.com/article/56801/brazilian-marines-buy-23-aav7a1-amphibious-tractors

What fascinates me about Brazil is that while it is modernizing at the moment, it'll still retain a large number of old and probably obsolete equipment. But since it is such a large country, it could probably use said old equipment for policing within its internal borders while retaining the advanced equipment for (probable) use abroad.

So basically spicy Latin Russia?
>>
>>28302231

Santiago, yes.

the situation is far more complicated, like, a fuckton more.

Avalos(Gordi's boy) buys land, turns out he's doing a tax evasion scheme by intentionally playing with confidential government information, now turns out he has a lot of unchecked money on foreign accounts, and it just spreads from there and the whole goddamn thing is so crooked, suspicious and unaccounted for the entire cabinet is shitting it's pants

there's the Penta case, where a lot of insurance companies linked to the same group also evaded taxes by putting out receipts with altered or fake causes, it also sprawls into everything, it's also touching a lot of important people, it's probably the biggest justice process of the decade.

there's the colusion cases, where it was found a lot of pharmacies, services and even toilet paper companies were artificially inflating prices in an oligopoly, which made everyone joke about how they were literally taking Chileans by the ass

aaaand to your last point, there's 'Milicogate' in which some army officers used up to 500 million pesos in casinos and private transfers from the defense budget that was supposed to go into adquisition of material like more uniforms and weapons. Oh, and somehow drugs were found on a shipment of vehicles(can't name them) that were sent to Europe for refurbishing.

in general we've been hit by a wave of corruption that's been debilitating the country's institutions, government is weak and ineffective, stupid, poorly conceived laws are getting passed, there's strikes on everything, copper prizes are going down to the point we will be at loss if production doesn't get way cheaper soon, and the economic growth is dangerously low. We're getting weak, and our lovely neighbors are gonna take advantage of that.
