Very obscure and he only has one impressive feat, but I just love Fritz Christen.
> On the morning of September 24, 1941, Christen and his anti-tank battery were engaging Russian targets north of the village of Lushno. In an initial engagement, Soviet skirmishers killed all of the other men of the battery. While exposed to artillery and small arms fire, Christen manned his 50mm cannonalone, holding on without supplies or provisions for the next three days. When a counterattack by other Totenkopf troops recaptured Lushno, Christen was credited with having knocked out 13 Soviet tanks and killed nearly 100 enemy soldiers singlehandedly.

Admiral Sir Walter Henry Cowan, 1st Baronet, KCB, DSO & Bar, MVO

"During World War II he was given a job by his old friend Roger Keyes, then head of the Commandos. Cowan voluntarily took the lower rank of commander and went to Scotland in 1941 to train the commandos in small boat handling.[1] He served in North Africa, where he saw action at Mechili and at the Battle of Bir Hakeim. Having attached himself to the Indian 18th King Edward VII's Own Cavalry, he was captured on 27 May 1942,[1] having fought an Italian tank crew single-handedly armed only with a revolver. He was repatriated in 1943 under an unusual agreement with Italy whereby some 800 Italian seamen interned in neutral Saudi Arabia from the Red Sea Flotilla were exchanged for a similar number of British prisoners of war. An unusual feature was that there was no stipulation about the men’s future activities and they were free to return to action so he rejoined the commandos and saw action in Italy during 1944. He was awarded a bar to his DSO. He retired once more in 1945. After the war he was invited to become colonel of the 18th King Edward VII's Own and visited India to receive this honour, which he considered the greatest he had received."

Continuing the theme of "badass dudes with Sabaton songs about them," Witold Pilecki. Fought in WWI, then resisted the Soviets in 1923 both as a part of the regular army and the Polish partisan forces. Then in 1939, the Nazis invaded, and he was a cavalry platoon commander (and later divisional second-in-command) and led his unit in heavy fighting near Lviv, until the Soviet invasion led to Poland's surrender. But that's only the beginning. After his division was disbanded, he returned to Warsaw with his former commanding officer, Major Jan Włodarkiewicz, and formed the Secret Polish Army, the first of what would become many resistance groups. Then, in 1940, he went to Auschwitz, under a false name. At the time it was believed to be a POW/detention camp, and his intent was to collect intelligence and try to start a resistance movement. Not only did he accomplish that, but he passed documents along to the Polish Home Army (then forwarded to the Allies) detailing camp operations and the Holocaust.

Since the British and resistance wouldn't stage a mass breakout or assault on Auschwitz, he then fucking broke out while assigned to a shift at the bakery outside the camp with two other men, stealing a pile of German documents on the way. Then he linked back up with the Home Army, assisting them however he could (and starting a preemptive resistance movement against the Soviets) until the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Being fucking badass as all hell, he proceeded to fight as a private, not revealing his identity or rank until the loss of many officers forced him to step up and take command. Pilecki's bastion on the outskirts of Warsaw held for two weeks under heavy German attack, continually harassing their supply lines. After a time in Italy with the Polish army-in-exile, he returned to Poland to gather intelligence for the government-in-exile. Eventually captured and executed as a spy by the Soviets, his final words were "Long live free Poland!"

Another good one from the same-ish era, John III Sobieski, king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Most /k/-worthy action took place during the Battle of Vienna in 1683, in which kebab was removed with extreme prejudice, breaking the threat of the Ottoman Empire in Europe. The Ottomans were laying siege to Vienna, digging mines and other assorted bastardry, when the Holy League reinforcements arrived. For some reason, instead of fighting the relieving army, they continued trying to breach the walls of the city, leaving their flanks open and vulnerable from the rear. Sobieski took advantage of this in a ridiculously magnificent way, leading an 18,000-man cavalry charge to smash through the Turks. And of course, this was in the era where kings went to war in person, so Sobieski himself led it at the head of a formation of 3000 Winged Hussars.

This is so typical British army it pisses me the fuck off.

I'm an officer atm so I can tell you, the amount of times retarded orders have to become reality because nobody will second guess them and there is nobody around at the correct level in the chain of command to countermand them or change the plan in order to be more sensible.

I guess this is a problem in every military though
