There's not a lot of things to talk about with swords vs guns, especially since the initial buy-in is just about the same for anything decent.

For only 26 oz more (than the M9 bayonet), we can arm every soldier with a rapier.

Why haven't we done this yet? Combat effectiveness would be drastically improved.
>>
>>28293606
real life is not mount and blade warband
>>
>>28293620
If I thought it was mount and blade I would have suggested we arm all soldiers with heavy chargers and couched lances.

>>

This.

>>28293606
1. 26 oz is a big difference with bayonets.
2. Not multifunctional.
3. Long, can cause problems going in doors and stuff.
4. Very few people get knife kills anyway.
>>
>>28293606
Because even if they weighed the same the bayonet would be more desirable to use

That said, I love guns and swords pretty equally. Love both of their craftsmanship, history, and the arts of using them in combat.

Don't really get why people would dislike either after getting to know both well and studying them.
>>
>>28293626
interchanging them is equally as ignorant, that's the fucking joke. There's a hell of a lot more you can do with swords and other HEMA weaponry than slicing bottles, same as with guns.

the difference comes with the fact that hema shit is not meant to be sturdy or effective for combat. All that shit has blunted ends and isn't necessarily pretty, the other option is sturdy hand forged works of art and high quality steel that can be trusted with your life in CQC

the good shitâ„¢ at base quality price is usually 5x-6x more expensive than the cheap shit. oh and you could hang it on your wall too

pic related i would say is more in the middle of the spectrum

>Like that
Patrick barta, Peter johnsson. Have fun spending multiple thousands of dollars on one and being on a wait list for several years.

Affordable stuff that don't look anywhere near that good include the Hanwei tinker and Ronin katana viking stuff, which are decent budget. The tinker has the better blade and the ronin has nicer scabbards and fittings.

Albion's are excellent, but will be around $1000. Darksword armory is shit. Never buy from them, valiant armoury is good, I don't know of they have a viking though. Avoid deepeeka, windlass are ok and their deal of the day through MRL can give you the best budget sword out there. Don't know about del tin, but I think they're considered to be alright
>>
>>28293973
im looking at albion right now, thanks anon these look excellent. no cheesy screws in the pommel, looks like nice period looking leather grips. i think this will do nicely as a wall hanger/fun sword/historical reproduction , i am very impressed by their selection, they must have like 20 different viking patterns

Bishnu Shrestha took on a group of train robbers with a kukri. Some had pistols, most didn't. He killed a few of them and made the rest drop all their shit and run. There was at least 15 of them
>>
Is hanwei as shitty as I know deep down in my soul it is?

I don't want to spend a grand or two on a sword and find I don't like the thing.
>>
>>28293606

Because training someone to use a sword effectively is much harder than training someone to shoot.
>>
>>28292495
iirc some enfield sword bayonets are literally swords that attach to the end of a gun
>>
>>28294103
Depends on the models, the tinker line and some newer ones are decently balanced. Older European style ones used to be pretty bad. (the high end chinese and japanese style types are quite nice though)

... if you don't want to spend much and are fine with re-profiling a horribly sharpened edge and tip Hanwei it's a decent choice for a "sports" grade euro.

Of course compared to an albion they are shitty...
Valiant Armory is right in between the two, or at-least they were when I bought my bristol..

Hanwei: "Ah I see.. thats how a sword should feel like when moving it around... interesting, but damn I can't get rid of the feeling that it was build by someone usually making cutlery for ikea"

Valiant: "ooh, that's a nice looking one ... but somehow it doesn't really feel much more solid than the hanwei... "

Albion: "IT'S A SWORD!! O_O uuuhh swing swing ... now where do I get a scabbard or it... another $500 WTF!"

That thing looks like someone tried to forge a sword with the intent of making people only familiar with padded larp toys and no knowledge of history happy.

HEMA is trying to recreate historical effective fighting styles, blunted tips are necessary, but the equipment used (attached picture) is built to simulate the weight and feel of a real weapon.

II no longer consider them an option.. as in my case it took even longer, was 2 pounds heaver than ordered, and this weight was at the tip, as had no distal taper...

they trade historical accuracy on some of their swords for wider audience appeal, but they are still wonderful battle ready swords.
>>
>>28294557

About two or three year ago, It was Lutel handycraft.
You can see the lack of taper in some of the product pictures, like the tip of this one being a rather fat blob:
http://lutel-handicraft.com/?p=productsMore&iProduct=79&sName=Sword-12028

It likely won't be as much of an issue on some blade types that have a lot of lateral taper ...

http://lutel-handicraft.com/?p=productsMore&iProduct=92&sName=Rapier-14003

but I'd generally I would consider them a manufacturer of something that will certainly look good and won't break like a cheap wall-hanger, but might handle like one.
>>
>>28295147
The main thing bugging me about Darksword is that they ended up making a pattern welded "Elite" line.. that mainly features sword types that historically wouldn't have had a visible pattern.
But don't sell a viking era sword with such a blade that would have actually made sense...
>>
Would buy a Nordic sword or a rapier if I thought they were functional and not LARP shit.

The problem with these internet retailers is that they'll say their sword is "battle ready" but will snap off quicker than your butthole after taco night if you actually use them for their intended purpose.

This is why I stick to machetes and chink blades. Because if they break, I'm down $15. Oh well.
>>
>>28293736

Translation:
>49 year old Dias Costa suffered a home invasion in his house in Cordoba, Argentina. Once inside the house, the three criminals armed with two handguns, started hitting Mr. Costa and his wife. When they tried to enter his son’s bedroom, Mr. Costa grabbed a katana sword he had hanging on a wall and attacked the criminals, cutting them in their hands, arms and face. The fleeing criminals left in a vehicle along with an accomplice that was waiting outside but the driver crashed shortly after due to blood loss. The four criminals continued their escape on foot, but the blood trail was so big cops only had to follow it to a nearby house to capture the attackers.

I'm thinking on getting a sword, but I'm stuck between getting a long sword, or an arming sword (one handed) and a shield.

That is not for a long ways away though, my first melee weapon will be a Tomahawk.
>>
I took a piece of 1/8 in thick steel.
Used a shear at work to cut a 1 1/2in wide strip off the end. Cut it to 3 ft long.
Then ground it and filed it sharp along one edge.
I don't know much about heat treating. But it was high carbon steel to begin with.
Will it function as a decent sword.

> I love arts and crafts on company time.
>>
>>28298966
People will tell you that you absolutely need high carbon steel that is heat treated for swords, but the fact is people used swords made of softer metals, bronze and iron mostly, for thousands of years, and they worked just fine. Just test it on some tree branches or something. It will likely bend, and won't hold an edge well, but it will most likely function.
>>
>>28292426

Only not wanted by a particularly vocal segment of the gun-autists who are obsessed with the gun, to the detriment of anything else.

As long as you're a normal person who knows that swords are an obsolete weapon in modern war (ie, dont go around claiming they're the greatest weapon ever, etc) the more people interested in them, the better.

>>28298966
>Will it function as a decent sword.

it will function, yes.

will it be decent? unlikely. There's a lot more to a good sword design than just making a sharp edge.
Aside from the obvious - the whole heat-treatment to ensure its sprung, neither too brittle nor too soft, there's a whole load of subtle details that make a decent sword - stuff like distal taper - a blade might well start 3/16ths, 1/4 of an inch thick at the grip, but by the time you reach the point it might well be only 1/16th of an inch thick - that takes out a lot of mass, without it being too flexy. a good pommel for a western hilt, a good hilt for oriental, good bindings, all those sort of things are what make a sword a sword, and not a machete.
>>
>>28293298
If you think you can effectively carry a sword for self-defense, then you'll need a fedora, a trench coat, and a diet. Yes, it's a lethal weapon. No, it's not one you can carry concealed in most any state. The police will have every reason to arrest you and book you into a mental health facility.
>>
>>28293736
>And how much should I expect to pay for one I can actually take to HEMA/SCA/Medival Combat Beating-the-Shit-Out-Of-Each-Other?

about three-fifty.

No, seriously, about 350. Pounds, Dollars, Euros, doesnt matter which, that's a good benchmark to look at for most countries.

about the 350 mark is where its going to be good enough to trust. You can get cheaper, a bit - a Regenyei feder for HEMA is about 250 euros, if you're in the US, expect to pay about 300 with shipping.

Generally, if its under 200 it will be shit, and will likely come apart on you. between 200 and 300 is a bit of a risk, but most are ok.
over 400, you're looking at either overpriced, or really high-end stuff.

Can strongly recommend Regenyei, Ensifer, or Marco Danelli for hema swords.

I don't particularly like guns either, OP. Range time is a chore, and my police surplus .38 k-frame is the used Honda Civic of guns. You need to perform a decent cut to get through clothing.
Most are not double kills even if it looks like it.
This one shows the forms in more idealized fashion:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohmLaZHStmI

And if you know you'll be in messy fight and probably get hit you'll dress appropriately.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hlIUrd7d1Q

Techniques to get past it will be different, and show why many of the late medieval swords are narrow with a stiff reinforced tip.

Aside from literally every country's definition of modern warfare, hunting, skeet shooting, and self defense, yeah you're totally right.

That being said, I appreciate good steel when I find it. Especially innawoods.

It's kind of sad watching bladed weapons become less and less practical over the years. That kukri just fills me with bad thoughts. Then again I'm not even enlisted, so my perspective isn't valid.

There was someone on this board that told the story of an Army Ranger who hacked an Iraqi apart with a Tomahawk after they grabbed his rifle or something in a doorway. That's some Valhalla worthy shit. I wish I could screen cap it but I can never find it.

Why would you want a sword as a weapon tho? Unless you have training, a knife seems more practical imo.

Where would one go online to get a blade or something for actual use? Like a spear or something for hunting.

Depends on the context,
in the most likely, a self defense context in your home, a sword (unless too large to use indoors) will give you more reach and be almost impossible to defend against unless the opponent has something to effectively parry with.
Even if an untrained person is slashing about randomly.

Knife (unless it's a sword sized one one):
You need to move into grappling distance to do any damage that would stop the opponent.

Sword:
you can remove a persons arm at a distance the opponent won't even be able to touch you with a knife.
>>
>>28292426

Shouldn't matter as long as you don't go around tipping your fedora about how you think swords are for REAL men or go on some autistic rant about katanas.

I personally like

I've gotten the privilege of getting to hear him speak on sword design and geometry (the old USA Bladesmith Association, back when it was just a forum). That man is passionate about his craft.

That's Dave Delagardelle's work. It's good, solid sword making, possibly some of the finest in this country. His works are both wall-worthy and fight-ready. (HEMA legal, too, last I checked). But Dave's stuff is SPENDY. I'm talking " ranging from new sports car to custom Holland and Holland pistol" prices here. You wouldn't catch me actually USING it outside of absolute desperation or as a bragging piece.

That is a Patrick Barta. Guy's a genius at pattern welds, though I'd say he's not as artistic about it as J. Arthur Loose.

Kinda off topic, but I was wondering about getting a spear.

I went to Kult of athena and I'm thinking about a 'arms & armor Celtic spear'
http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AA800&name=Arms+%26+Armor+Celtic+Spear

Would this model be good for both melee and throwing, or would it be better to get a thrusting spear and a javelin separately?

No, he's got a point. A nugget or equivalent rifle is a shitty HD gun, too heavy and chunky for hunting without a stand, outdated, etc. We buy things like that because they're awesome.

Actually, plain edges are preferred innawoods because it makes carving considerably easier (like feather sticks). Serrations are more useful for utility, like cutting zipties or other plastic items, aswell as fabrics like nylon webbing. That's the new USMC issue bayonet by Ontario btw.

The MiaoDao is more similar to a Katana.

Basket, and no. It might bend somewhat if it takes a strong direct hit, but it will keep your hand safe.

Unless it's poorly made of course.
>>
>>28306850
The sword is basically the ideal sidearm, that fares ok against any other melee weapon.

It's a jack-of-all-trades that trades the offensive power of polearms for portability and is defensively great (it's balanced better for parrying than say a mace or axe, and it's got waaay more reach than a knife).
