Just spoke to a recruiter today, got a 95 on the AQFT. No lines scores, because it wasn't the actual ASVAB. Will a high score help me get the option 40 with my chosen MOS or is that just a matter of waiting?

The recruiters are partially responsible for whom they send and where. If you, as a recruiter, keep sending completely unqualified recruits to RASP, they're going to check to see if you're even doing your job.

Recruiters actually have a very shitty job. When some fuck who's spent way too much time thinking Cawadoodie is real wants to enlist, but only as a super-elite operator, the recruiter is the one that has to stomp on his dreams, but not so hard that the kid doesn't want to join at all. After all, the recruiter's still got quotas to fill.

I was a recruiter for the Navy during a shore duty and it was surprisingly hard and shitty job.

If they have the scores and they're fit enough, then they are qualified. In my case it was SEALs, not Rangers, but the idea is the same.

The problem is when you get kids who are borderline. If they JUST pass the tests and they can JUST get to the physical minimums, they expect to hear, "Great! You're good to go." In fact, they are typically just the first to wash out, when they realize that making the minimums will make them the single weakest candidate in their class.
If they do really well in one part, and just barely pass the other, then they might make it, since they only have to worry about one thing, not two.

Truth be told, it's the women who make the easiest enlistees. They usually need help with their fitness, but they are far less picky about their MOS. They are willing to take the clerical jobs that guys would only do if they had no choice.

I had this one kid, to whom I suggested "Mess Specialist" (he got the scores for it) get really fucking pissed at me, and started railing at me and the whole Navy.
(And here is the hardest part of the recruiter's job.)
I had to sit there with a calm, serene smile on my face while he explained to me how everything in the world worked.

If they were going to try for SEAL (or SWCC) and they weren't obviously unqualified, I would test their athleticism and commitment at the same time.

I would have them meet me at the local high school's track at the ass-crack of dawn. We would do a workout together (for my own benefit) and then I would give them a run/situp/pushup/pullup test. If they were willing to do everything I asked and never complained, I'd have a pretty good idea if they wouldn't be a complete waste of a BUD/S spot.

Most of the time, kids didn't even show up. If they came back to me later, we would have to have a serious talk about the importance of commitment.

After their "warmup" if they could manage 50+ pushups, 60+ situps, 10+ pullups and do a sub 6-minute mile, I'd be willing to give them their shot.

I say "kids" but we're actually talking people in their early 20s usually.

Some are better, some are worse. It's like any job.

So much of it depends on the recruit themselves. If they show real dedication and drive, I want to go out of my way to get them whatever they want. If the recruit just wanted a job, well, "OK, fill out these forms."
I was never the super-stoked, super-motivated hard sell guy. Nearly all of the Marine recruiters were like that, though my own recruiter in the Navy was as well. If the recruit wanted to think about it, I let them think about it. I didn't feel the need to call them up or anything.

The part I really hated were high school visits because my Marine colleagues and I would go together. They'd be wearing their dress blues, I'd be wearing my crackerjacks. Their pitch to the students was "Boys, want one of these uniforms? No? Ask the girls how I look in mine."
Whereas my pitch was, "You'll almost never have to wear what I'm wearing right now. Also something about learning valuable skills and paying for college."

If you're not as smart or not as fit, but you show no reaction in even the most stressful situation, you're born to be Special Forces.

ISA is an SMU.

CI Agent is an MOS, and since ~2006 it's no longer an IET (Initial Entry Training) MOS. Which means you have to be an E4 promotable and put in a personnel request for the MOS, or more likely reenlist as an E4p.

I imagine for the Navy CI is the same.

So if you want MI and want to steer towards CI you've got 35F (all source, honestly I would say go this route because you'll get an understanding of the intelligence process, how it works, why it's important, why intelligence is important, what predictive analysis is and how to do it, analytical tools like linch pin analysis and analysis of competing hypotheses, etc.) or 35M (HUMINT collections, you'll work on a THT, do detainee operations, or be deployed as support for combat and SOF units, but any MI MOS can be support for SOF).

No, the medical records are protected. There is no giant vault they can go to to look up your records. If you don't mention it, and it doesn't have any scars showing, they won't know.
NOW, since you mentioned allergies, I do have to ask what are some other shit you've had. Everyone has wisdom teeth and tonsils, or maybe a hernia when they were young. That shit don't matter (though tonsils are obvious if they check the throat). But other allergies you REALLY should think of telling them about them. And any major surgeries you've had you really need to consider that as well, as depending on what it is it might cause problems in basic.

Different branches have different requirements for UAV pilots. The Air Force, for example, requires you to be an officer, but the Navy and Army do not, if I remember correctly.

This. POG is a meme for grunt Marines when they're at home. In reality, there's inside the wire and outside the wire. Motor T units have seen more combat than they deserve, because their trucks have IED magnets installed. Arty forward observers and cav scouts put themselves at risk. Tankers are just fucking awesome anyway.

No matter what your MOS is, if you've been shot at, you are in select company.

On the other hand, if you're a UAV operator or have a cushy desk job, that's different.

If you're a certifiable dumbass on the ASVAB, recruiters try to browbeat you into taking whatever job they're having a hard time selling. ~30 AFQT guys get nervous and are more inclined to become mop inspectors than guys with a more competitive score.

Inversely, recruiters themselves get nervous when they have to deal with a 90+ score, since applicants like that often shoot for jobs that need more work on the recruiters' part. My recruiter was visibly pissed when I told him I wanted a 15X series. And he was equally relieved when I told him I didn't want to wait 2-4 years to take the SIFT.

I have been told that 13Fs and 18Ds are basically the surest way to "operate" for lack of a better term. (So few people actually make it into a Ranger Battalion they might as well not count.)

13Fs, particularly ones that are attached to artillery companies, are routinely sent out into the field in small teams to direct fire. 18Ds are routinely sent out in small teams to observe and report.

As much as it's nice to be able to say, "I served in the Army/Air Force/Navy/Marines, went to war and saw combat," that's simply no longer realistic. Wars are no longer that organized. Dedicated combat units will patrol for months and never catch a whiff of the enemy. Support staff will be overrun. Actually seeing combat is like winning a strange lottery.

The only units that are pretty much guaranteed to have enemy contact are Special Operations units, or the French Foreign Legion (and the less said of them, the better). Anything else relies on chance.

So if you're thinking of joining any service for the express purpose of getting shot and and shooting back, it's time re-evaluate, because you're pretty much guaranteed to spend your four year term being bitterly disappointed or downright indignant when your unit is called upon to clean up after a hurricane hits Mississippi.

Also the other advantage to starting out working All Source is that you get to see all the other INT disciplines and work with them in the capacity of creating a finished intelligence product and conducting predictive analysis.

As an example, I did a CI Analytics course at CENTCOM in MacDill with an Air Force OSI instructor. So I got specific training on working CI as an analyst, and it was good training. Also got to meet some Naval Special Warfare IS guys. Cool as fuck and made me contemplate reenlisting into the Navy before I decided to go to college.

You can also get experience watching HUMINTers work doing detainee operations. Part of the All Source skill set includes debriefing so you can end up working detainee ops with HUMINTers.

How do I run without fucking myself up? I don't understand. I've read so much shit about running now. I land on the balls of my feet, I try and be springy and light or whatever the fuck. I keep my arms at my sides and don't cross in the middle or slouch.

I don't know what the fuck to do. I can ride my bike for 20 miles now at a 12 mph pace (with lots of hills in my route, too), not fantastic, but it's at least decent I would think and translate at little bit. But I can barely run for 6 minutes and whenever I do my calves get fucked up and I can't do shit for the next 3 days. I don't understand. How the fuck do I run? How the fuck can I train myself to run better?

I don't know what my shoes are specifically if that's the issue, they're just some white reebok I got from Walmart awhile ago. They've got a flat bottom, is that it? I don't have any money, would I be better off trying to run barefoot?

I'm 5'10 180 pounds, still relatively fat but not completely fucked. I don't know how to fucking run without screwing myself up. As far as I know I don't have any diseases or anything, no allergies or any medical history at all. I don't fucking get it.

I can walk without issue also, I generally walk for 3-4 miles every day with my dog, uphill downhill whatever.

It is as bad as you make it. The classes are long and for some people they are hard. If you go into being a nuke wanting to be one, it is better than those here who didn't really know what nukes did and just took it for the cash. You will spend lots of time in the building studying, you won't have much free time outside of the weekends, and honestly it's this command's irritating policies outside of classes that are the hardest part.

But if you can deal with that, it's a fair deal. The stuff you learn is interesting and you'll have a sense of superiority over non-nukes trained into you. You'll also get to rock rank at a young age.

You don't get to really pick what rate you'll be though. You put ina wishlist at boot camp and you'll almost certainly get your #1 or #2 choice. A friend of mine wanted MM and he got ET. I wanted EM originally and got MM (Though now I wouldn't change anything about that, I like being an MM) so keep that in mind.

Ha, no. You'll make rank fast, but you're still getting the same enlisted pay as everyone else. If you go subs you'll get an extra 80 dollars a month once you finish the pipeline and you'll eventually get an extra bit for special duty pay, but it's not a lot. The enlistment bonus doesn't come as quickly as you'd like it, you spend a minimum 10 months before you see the first third of it. The reenlistment bonuses are nice, but if you don't intend to do more than your 6 years (minimum nuke contract time) you won't see it. Officers will still make mountains more than you and be treated better than you (as you'll see from the officer students which go to class just like you do).

You could have a top notch dude who knows how to make an efficient group of guys, or you could get a guy who runs every day because he's hardheaded and is too insecure to do something that other people would do better than him at.

How does one apply to join specific units within the military once you're in? I've always wanted to be in the 10th Mountain ever since I saw Fire on the Mountain as a kid, but I don't know at what stage you get put where.

I figure no one ever wants to go to Fort Drum, so that might help.

Does anyone have insight into how the economic background of individual soldiers affects how they perform in the military? Everyone's perception is that the military mostly attracts poor kids with no other options, but apparently that hasn't been the case since at least the 80's. It honestly seems like a shame to me, if the military is supposed to be an honest reflection of American society.

Nowadays it tends to fall along job lines. This is why, for instance, different parts of the Army are so culturally different. Some parts of the military attract middle class kids with some college who are looking to use the military to maximum benefit and move on, while other parts tend to attract those who are trying to escape their civilian life and cling to the military as long as possible.
