So I read that in the Army soldiers who drive Bradleys and Strykers are just 11b's trained to operate them. How do you get into that job? Can you be guaranteed it or do you just get to pick your MOS and you get assigned what your specific job is?
>>
When I go back to MEPS day of shipment, for secondary physical exam, do they have you do the duck walk and other shit again?
>>
>>28290387
Nah you just do height and weight and they ask you if anything came up I think
>>
>>28290335
Be 11B and get orders to a Stryker/Mech unit or battalion. You can't control the orders.

Just spoke to a recruiter today, got a 95 on the AQFT. No lines scores, because it wasn't the actual ASVAB. Will a high score help me get the option 40 with my chosen MOS or is that just a matter of waiting?
>>
>>28296593
It's just a matter of waiting, as long as you get the 110 GT score or higher. My opt 40 was luckily the last one available so I got mine right away.
>>
>>28292921
I am plenty flexible, I do martial arts and other active stuff. The reason it was such a huge problem for me was that they have you walk heel to toe, and I have always walked ball of the foot to heel so it really made me look like I couldn't control shit on my balance.
>>
>>28296593

It seems like as long as you get above 90% the recruiters are pretty willing to make it happen for you.

Source: Recruiter was kind of wishy washy on giving me OP40 68W until I got a 92, then he was hyped to do it.

>>
>>28297561
The recruiters are partially responsible for whom they send and where. If you, as a recruiter, keep sending completely unqualified recruits to RASP, they're going to check to see if you're even doing your job.

Recruiters actually have a very shitty job. When some fuck who's spent way too much time thinking Cawadoodie is real wants to enlist, but only as a super-elite operator, the recruiter is the one that has to stomp on his dreams, but not so hard that the kid doesn't want to join at all. After all, the recruiter's still got quotas to fill.

I was a recruiter for the Navy during a shore duty and it was surprisingly hard and shitty job.
>>
>>28297780
What exactly makes a candidate completely unqualified for RASP? If you have the scores and aren't a complete tub of lard, by the time RASP rolls around you should be able to physically pass the standards(especially if you have the willpower, which is what they want anyways, no?).
>>
>>28297843
If they have the scores and they're fit enough, then they are qualified. In my case it was SEALs, not Rangers, but the idea is the same.

The problem is when you get kids who are borderline. If they JUST pass the tests and they can JUST get to the physical minimums, they expect to hear, "Great! You're good to go." In fact, they are typically just the first to wash out, when they realize that making the minimums will make them the single weakest candidate in their class.
If they do really well in one part, and just barely pass the other, then they might make it, since they only have to worry about one thing, not two.

Truth be told, it's the women who make the easiest enlistees. They usually need help with their fitness, but they are far less picky about their MOS. They are willing to take the clerical jobs that guys would only do if they had no choice.

I had this one kid, to whom I suggested "Mess Specialist" (he got the scores for it) get really fucking pissed at me, and started railing at me and the whole Navy.
(And here is the hardest part of the recruiter's job.)
I had to sit there with a calm, serene smile on my face while he explained to me how everything in the world worked.

The Marine recruiter (we shared storefront space) came up to me afterwards stifling a laugh.
>You really should get your blood pressure looked-at. How bad did you want to chuck that little shit through the plate glass?
>So bad I could taste it.
>>
>>28298002
What is considered fit enough, for those spots? I mean, you don't exactly need to be a top athlete going in, that's what BCT and their AIT is for, yeah? I mean you can fix physical deficiencies pretty easy, its hard to fix stupid and weakwilled

>I had this one kid, to whom I suggested "Mess Specialist" (he got the scores for it) get really fucking pissed at me, and started railing at me and the whole Navy.
Yikes, he thought we was gonna be a uber obberator I'm sure
>>
>>28297843
RASP isnt for kids who "aren't a tub of lard."
Going in you better be athletic, and even then you're just the bare minimum.
>>
>>28298197
12 minute 2-mile time, 12 minute/mile ruck time, easily get a perfect PFT score (100 pushups/2 minutes and 100 situps/2 minutes.)
>>
>>28298197
If they were going to try for SEAL (or SWCC) and they weren't obviously unqualified, I would test their athleticism and commitment at the same time.

I would have them meet me at the local high school's track at the ass-crack of dawn. We would do a workout together (for my own benefit) and then I would give them a run/situp/pushup/pullup test. If they were willing to do everything I asked and never complained, I'd have a pretty good idea if they wouldn't be a complete waste of a BUD/S spot.

Most of the time, kids didn't even show up. If they came back to me later, we would have to have a serious talk about the importance of commitment.

After their "warmup" if they could manage 50+ pushups, 60+ situps, 10+ pullups and do a sub 6-minute mile, I'd be willing to give them their shot.

I say "kids" but we're actually talking people in their early 20s usually.
>>
>>28298197
>Yikes, he thought we was gonna be a uber obberator I'm sure

That kid came back two days later with his mother. I was thinking to myself, "Ah shit, now I'm going to have to deal with a mother whose special snowflake doesn't get to be Solid Snake." but she made him apologize to me and the entire office for his outburst.

Turns out she'd served in the Navy in the 90's.

The three of us had a good talk about what junior could expect from the Navy.
>>
>>28298311
are all recruiters as good as your?
>>
>>28298426
>are all recruiters as good as you?
Some are better, some are worse. It's like any job.

So much of it depends on the recruit themselves. If they show real dedication and drive, I want to go out of my way to get them whatever they want. If the recruit just wanted a job, well, "OK, fill out these forms."
I was never the super-stoked, super-motivated hard sell guy. Nearly all of the Marine recruiters were like that, though my own recruiter in the Navy was as well. If the recruit wanted to think about it, I let them think about it. I didn't feel the need to call them up or anything.

The part I really hated were high school visits because my Marine colleagues and I would go together. They'd be wearing their dress blues, I'd be wearing my crackerjacks. Their pitch to the students was "Boys, want one of these uniforms? No? Ask the girls how I look in mine."
Whereas my pitch was, "You'll almost never have to wear what I'm wearing right now. Also something about learning valuable skills and paying for college."
>>
>>28298311
My recruiter has turned down or crushed 6 kids at my high school for wanting to do SO. Why is he supporting me so much when I have an 85 on the asvab and am in average shape? I mean I'm definitely commited I'm just genuinely curious what his thought process is. My father was stationed with SW too and he tells me I have the mind for it.
>>
>>28298268
>>28298288
>>28298311
I really didn't mean "tub of lard" literally.

In any case, I've got 6 months at the very least before the tattoos they want gone are gone. That gives me time to max the PT for sure.

>serious talk about the importance of commitment.
And that's why I will max the APFT before enlisting. I know commitment, I worked my way through college full time, running a $15,000/week budget at a local grocer. Which, ironically, killed all athletic ability I had. It's returning quickly, thankfully.
>>
>>28298643
Truly, I can't say. There could be any number of reasons. Maybe you interview really well. Maybe he just thinks that promising you the chance to operate will get you to sign on the dotted line.

Recruiting is part coaching, part evangelizing, part psycho-analyzing. Everyone does it a little differently.
>>
>>28298778
Recruiters interview you? I walked in, told them why I was interested in the military and mine offered the give me the practice AQFT and after told me I qualify for basically anything. Sort of like >>28298643 I'm in average shape but they said I could have the opt 40 if it popped up, barring the actual ASVAB of course.
>>
>>28298863
Interview's the wrong word, probably. Interpersonal skills, maybe.

I always asked recruits why the wanted to join, what they hoped to get out of it, what they felt their personal strengths and weaknesses were. So much of success in the military depends on mindset, it's good to get a sense of it.
If you're really smart and really athletic, but have a brittle personality, you'll be a mess.
If you're not as smart or not as fit, but you show no reaction in even the most stressful situation, you're born to be Special Forces.

Makes perfect sense. Hard to train stress reactions until your actually in a stressful situation. Any tips on that one? I think the only time I've been truly stressed was being robbed at gunpoint, mostly cause it was so out of the blue. Being questioned over lies and shit never really got me.
>>
>>28297590

>>
>>28298311
It's fine, you can call them what they are because they sure as hell aren't adults, they're forever children.
>>
>>28299137
>Any tips on that one?

Part of your personality. Some people turn into a blubbery mess, some people turn off the emotional part of their brains. It's really nothing you can work on. It's just how you're built.

Incidentally, this is what the real point of SEAL, Ranger, Special Forces, etc etc training is all about. Smart people are easy to find, fit people are easy to find. They put you through hell just to see how much you can take before you can't take any more. If they think you can take enough, then congrats, you're in.

>Being questioned over lies and shit never really got me.

Don't lie to recruiters.
>>
>>28299225
>Incidentally, this is what the real point of SEAL, Ranger, Special Forces, etc etc training is all about. Smart people are easy to find, fit people are easy to find. So, they're essentially testing you on your reaction to stressful situations?
>>
>>28299275
>So, they're essentially testing you on your reaction to stressful situations?

Basically, yes. How stressful and chaotic can your surroundings be before you cease to function effectively? Honestly, what really separates the Rangers from a regular soldier who gets the same PFT and ASVAB scores? The Ranger never loses the ability to think and has a scroll on his shoulder to prove it. The soldier? Who knows? no one has bothered to find out, so no one WANTS to find out.
>>
>>28299225
>Don't lie to recruiters.
Why the fuck do people keep saying this?
Lie your fucking ass off, the recruiters don't actually care, the military doesn't care, and you don't care.
You have literally nothing to lose by lying. I want this meme to stop.
>>
>>28299331
You don't lie for two reasons.

1. Honor. All militaries are big on it. "Do the right thing, even when no one's looking." Does that sound familiar? Your military career starts when you first step through the recruiter's door. Don't start it by lying.

2. In the event you are found out, you get a dishonorable discharge for a fraudulent enlistment. Good luck ever getting a job with one of those on your record.

>you can't get go to airborne school if you need a waiver for anything
>>
>>28297345
>what MOS or rating would allow me to join ISA, or CI agent?

ISA is an SMU.

CI Agent is an MOS, and since ~2006 it's no longer an IET (Initial Entry Training) MOS. Which means you have to be an E4 promotable and put in a personnel request for the MOS, or more likely reenlist as an E4p.

I imagine for the Navy CI is the same.

So if you want MI and want to steer towards CI you've got 35F (all source, honestly I would say go this route because you'll get an understanding of the intelligence process, how it works, why it's important, why intelligence is important, what predictive analysis is and how to do it, analytical tools like linch pin analysis and analysis of competing hypotheses, etc.) or 35M (HUMINT collections, you'll work on a THT, do detainee operations, or be deployed as support for combat and SOF units, but any MI MOS can be support for SOF).

>>
>>28302100
>Will they shift through the other shit and find my past records?
No, the medical records are protected. There is no giant vault they can go to to look up your records. If you don't mention it, and it doesn't have any scars showing, they won't know.
NOW, since you mentioned allergies, I do have to ask what are some other shit you've had. Everyone has wisdom teeth and tonsils, or maybe a hernia when they were young. That shit don't matter (though tonsils are obvious if they check the throat). But other allergies you REALLY should think of telling them about them. And any major surgeries you've had you really need to consider that as well, as depending on what it is it might cause problems in basic.

Also, where the fuck is everyone? There ain't another /meg/ thread, I wake up and there's like 4 new posts.
>>
>>28304177
>Also, where the fuck is everyone?
I guess they don't want RASP workout tips, at least not from /k/. Having seen pictures of the meetups on /k/, I can't say I blame them.
>>
>>28304198
Nobody is actually joining, MEGs are roleplay threads.
>>
>>28304204
I think that's why the threads about non-operator jobs are more useful. The odds of anyone here actually making it into the Special Forces is slim to nil, but when a guy comes on and talks about being a Geospatial Engineer in the Army or something, that's useful. It's a job people can actually get and it's one they probably didn't know about ahead of time.

>Cavalry Scout is still a POG, despite having a ridiculously dangerous job, and thus gets respect. Safely in the rear with the gear is REMF.

This. POG is a meme for grunt Marines when they're at home. In reality, there's inside the wire and outside the wire. Motor T units have seen more combat than they deserve, because their trucks have IED magnets installed. Arty forward observers and cav scouts put themselves at risk. Tankers are just fucking awesome anyway.

No matter what your MOS is, if you've been shot at, you are in select company.

On the other hand, if you're a UAV operator or have a cushy desk job, that's different.

Nothing is wrong with it unless you use the phrase "basically like" when describing your job and comparing it to something that's far more awesome.

Even grunts do this. (Actually they're some of the worst offenders.) Every grunt is "basically like a recon Marine" or "basically like a Ranger".

If you're a certifiable dumbass on the ASVAB, recruiters try to browbeat you into taking whatever job they're having a hard time selling. ~30 AFQT guys get nervous and are more inclined to become mop inspectors than guys with a more competitive score.

Inversely, recruiters themselves get nervous when they have to deal with a 90+ score, since applicants like that often shoot for jobs that need more work on the recruiters' part. My recruiter was visibly pissed when I told him I wanted a 15X series. And he was equally relieved when I told him I didn't want to wait 2-4 years to take the SIFT.

I have been told that 13Fs and 18Ds are basically the surest way to "operate" for lack of a better term. (So few people actually make it into a Ranger Battalion they might as well not count.)

13Fs, particularly ones that are attached to artillery companies, are routinely sent out into the field in small teams to direct fire. 18Ds are routinely sent out in small teams to observe and report.
>>
>>28305664
19D, not 18D. 19D is Cav Scout.

Am I making some grave mistake or will it all be okay?
>>
>>28306070
>Am I making some grave mistake or will it all be okay?

Every single water dog enlisted the Marines as a Combat Engineer. The odds of getting an EOD job are very slim. You are most likely making a grave mistake. If you want to work in construction, get a job with a construction company and get paid better.
>>
>>28306070
I wouldn't worry about it.
>>
>>28306196
Truthfully, it was more about getting a more authentic marine experience (combat) without having to be just a normal grunt. But if it is that shit, I'll find something else. Thanks.
>>
>>28306265
Motor T actually has the highest rate of seeing combat. Something about riding in slow-moving, poorly-manned, unarmored trucks that are loaded with valuable supplies.

If you want to see combat, there you go, but you won't be a 03XX and, thus, a pogue. Then again, Combat Engineers are pogues as well.
>>
>>28306299
I see now that I was coming from a much more superficial standpoint.

I want a non-POG MOS and that's that really. I don't care too much for "civilian life translation", I just want to have a unique experience in my life.
>>
>>28306359
>I want a non-POG MOS
>considering enlisting in the Marines as a Combat Engineer

wait...what?

Non-POG is grunt and all grunt MOS start with 03. (i.e. 0311 - Rifleman, 0331 - Machine Gunner, 0317 - Scout Sniper)

Engineer is 1371. POG. Cool POG, but still POG.
>>
>>28306359
>I just want to have a unique experience in my life.

Joining the Marines in any capacity will give you that. It will be some the strangest four years of your life.
>>
At this point, I'm not sure that marines are the right branch if combat is your goal.
>>
>>28307053
As much as it's nice to be able to say, "I served in the Army/Air Force/Navy/Marines, went to war and saw combat," that's simply no longer realistic. Wars are no longer that organized. Dedicated combat units will patrol for months and never catch a whiff of the enemy. Support staff will be overrun. Actually seeing combat is like winning a strange lottery.

The only units that are pretty much guaranteed to have enemy contact are Special Operations units, or the French Foreign Legion (and the less said of them, the better). Anything else relies on chance.

So if you're thinking of joining any service for the express purpose of getting shot and and shooting back, it's time re-evaluate, because you're pretty much guaranteed to spend your four year term being bitterly disappointed or downright indignant when your unit is called upon to clean up after a hurricane hits Mississippi.

Also the other advantage to starting out working All Source is that you get to see all the other INT disciplines and work with them in the capacity of creating a finished intelligence product and conducting predictive analysis.

As an example, I did a CI Analytics course at CENTCOM in MacDill with an Air Force OSI instructor. So I got specific training on working CI as an analyst, and it was good training. Also got to meet some Naval Special Warfare IS guys. Cool as fuck and made me contemplate reenlisting into the Navy before I decided to go to college.

You can also get experience watching HUMINTers work doing detainee operations. Part of the All Source skill set includes debriefing so you can end up working detainee ops with HUMINTers.

How do I run without fucking myself up? I don't understand. I've read so much shit about running now. I land on the balls of my feet, I try and be springy and light or whatever the fuck. I keep my arms at my sides and don't cross in the middle or slouch.

I don't know what the fuck to do. I can ride my bike for 20 miles now at a 12 mph pace (with lots of hills in my route, too), not fantastic, but it's at least decent I would think and translate at little bit. But I can barely run for 6 minutes and whenever I do my calves get fucked up and I can't do shit for the next 3 days. I don't understand. How the fuck do I run? How the fuck can I train myself to run better?

I don't know what my shoes are specifically if that's the issue, they're just some white reebok I got from Walmart awhile ago. They've got a flat bottom, is that it? I don't have any money, would I be better off trying to run barefoot?

I'm 5'10 180 pounds, still relatively fat but not completely fucked. I don't know how to fucking run without screwing myself up. As far as I know I don't have any diseases or anything, no allergies or any medical history at all. I don't fucking get it.

I can walk without issue also, I generally walk for 3-4 miles every day with my dog, uphill downhill whatever.

How do you define cool shit? I did have to treat battlefield casualties, but that was more scary than cool. No one died on my watch, though. I got to pull the lanyard on an M198 155mm howitzer. That was incredibly cool.

It starts to become routine. The human mind is very adaptable and anything can become routine.

The first time I deployed, I was scared shitless of everything and I was constantly on the verge of heatstroke. When on patrol, every piece of garbage on the road was a potential IED. Every knee twinge on one of my joes was an ACL tear.

The fourth time? Whelp, it's still hot as hell. Looks like someone blew up that cafe I liked. That's a shame. Hope the owner survived. What's that, private? Your feet hurt? Is it a blister? Fuck, private, don't come to me with every little boo-boo, I'm trying to do my job, here.
>>

I knew some of the Special Forces medics stationed at Bragg, but honestly, it's a huge place. There were around 35,000 people stationed there when I was in, and everyone was constantly going in or out.
>>
>>28308818
Another question. If you go Airborne with your 68W do you get the SF medical training or just the regular 68W? I only ask because if you go option 40 you get the SF training
>>
>>28308983
For Option 40 medics it goes like this:

Basic
AIT
Jump School
RASP
SOCM

If you get an Option 4, you can always ask for a spot at RASP and there's a good chance you'll get it since you're already booked for Jump School anyway.
>>
>>28308983
In addition >>28309044
(Sorry, I didn't read your whole question.)

No, you do not get SOCM with a basic Airborne contract. The difference between 68w AIT and SOCM is the same difference between an 11B and a Ranger.

>>
>>28316559
I'm glad you asked, as it turns out I am a nuke MM (Still in the pipeline).

It is as bad as you make it. The classes are long and for some people they are hard. If you go into being a nuke wanting to be one, it is better than those here who didn't really know what nukes did and just took it for the cash. You will spend lots of time in the building studying, you won't have much free time outside of the weekends, and honestly it's this command's irritating policies outside of classes that are the hardest part.

But if you can deal with that, it's a fair deal. The stuff you learn is interesting and you'll have a sense of superiority over non-nukes trained into you. You'll also get to rock rank at a young age.

You don't get to really pick what rate you'll be though. You put ina wishlist at boot camp and you'll almost certainly get your #1 or #2 choice. A friend of mine wanted MM and he got ET. I wanted EM originally and got MM (Though now I wouldn't change anything about that, I like being an MM) so keep that in mind.

Squatting will only affect your knees if you have god awful form. Stretching and doing stability exercises like balancing on one leg might help.
>>
>>28321040
>I think I can handle more schooling.

It is different than any schooling you've had up to this point. Not necessarily harder, but different. You will be expected to both understand a concept while also being able to repeat it verbatim as you are taught it.

>What are the irritating policies exactly
It's hard to put into words, you really have to go through it to know what I mean. Unreasonable hours and hair-trigger mastings scratch the surface.

>and is the cash as good as the rumors (more than officers)?
Ha, no. You'll make rank fast, but you're still getting the same enlisted pay as everyone else. If you go subs you'll get an extra 80 dollars a month once you finish the pipeline and you'll eventually get an extra bit for special duty pay, but it's not a lot. The enlistment bonus doesn't come as quickly as you'd like it, you spend a minimum 10 months before you see the first third of it. The reenlistment bonuses are nice, but if you don't intend to do more than your 6 years (minimum nuke contract time) you won't see it. Officers will still make mountains more than you and be treated better than you (as you'll see from the officer students which go to class just like you do).

When we aren't in the field we are constantly sitting around waiting for something to happen. If your unit isn't dildos that means you can probably just sleep or play videogames or something, if your unit is like mine that means "bettering yourself" (sleeping in your bathroom beccause that is the only door that can be locked during the work day and playing shit you can easily alt tab from over to marine net courses). Our corporals like to randomly bust into our rooms when they get bored to give us shit about arbitrary things (like playing videogames during the work day).

Not him but no. Usually doing a routine set up by the fitness instructor (a contractor) so its a mixture of old fashioned lifting and warrior athlete type shit.

You can have a hooah platoon and run a lot, theres definitely a chance for that. But that doesn't help you do anything but run long distance without gear on, so that is a poor training plan.

The military experience as a whole completely depends on the leadership that dictates your daily routines. You could have a top notch dude who knows how to make an efficient group of guys, or you could get a guy who runs every day because he's hardheaded and is too insecure to do something that other people would do better than him at.

I've been considering CG for a while now. I'm really liking a lot of the stuff I'm reading, especially with some of the more science oriented rates like MST. There was a CG guy who answered some of my questions here a few weeks ago. Might be worth trying to summon him

Do you know anything about being a nuke officer? Is it significantly more intense than being an enlisted nuke? Or does it just replace A-school with officer training?

I dunno if this is the right thread for this, but how is the National Guard, relative to the other branches?

I know you can live civilian life along side it, but that's about it.

Follow the rules anally.

Hydrate as much as possible.

If you aren't tired as fuck that day or need to be fully rested for something, go to the gym, or do a calisthenics routine.

Max your PT score with someone grading you like a prick.

Tie down your shit to your ruck and FLC.

Make a checklist when you pack.

Get a milkshake at Bruster's every now and then. Treat yourself dumbass, you're using a lot of calories.

Eat a well rounded meal at the DFAC, carb heavy if needed.

Don't suck at shooting and battle drills.

Don't get lost in the woods.

will i be staying in dorm like rooms or open bay barracks for ait at fort sill for AIT? From what ive been told they have just built a brand new building for ait people to stay in so hopefully it will be nice.

180 pounds is definitely not too fat to run. There are plenty of guys who are heavier than that and are decent runners. More likely it's his fucking walmart shoes.

How does one apply to join specific units within the military once you're in? I've always wanted to be in the 10th Mountain ever since I saw Fire on the Mountain as a kid, but I don't know at what stage you get put where.

I figure no one ever wants to go to Fort Drum, so that might help.
>>
how old would you say is too old to join the military with some sort of hands on role in mind?

i'm turning 23 in a month but if my current plan for life doesn't work out then i'd strongly consider the military. I had basically no chance of being accepted prior to this year due to an allergy that i've since had dealt with, but its severity would have had me instantly turned away. i'd like to say i'd consider SF but i'm assuming literally everyone says the same thing so i won't bother wasting time going through that.
>>
>>28332662
I started applying at 23, and after some medical shit, now I'm 25. Still planning on doing combat arms.

It's weird that soldiers today think they're expired in their mid 20s. I'm not really sure where that comes from.
>>
>>28299462

>honor

Lmao thats the least dishonorable thing you're going to do in your military career
>>
>>28332662
A buddy of mine just finished battle school and got posted to 3VP at like 48 years old. While the job is easier when you're younger, there's not some magic number in your 20's where you're suddenly too old to join combat arms.
>>
>>28332628
You won't be able to until your time is up at your first post (3 years usually). But there's no guarantee, chances are you'll have to reenlist to guarantee it, and...yeah.

Overall, you can't 'control' your orders for non-Airborne and non-SOF units.
>>
>>28330075

It's all the shitty things about the Army crammed into two days a month with no time/budget to do the cool shit.

Good idea if you want the bennies, but don't expect to do your job much. One weekend a month is just enough to keep up on mandatory "don't rape, don't drink, don't kill yourself" training.
>>
>>28332662

With no prior experience? Probably around 30. You have to remember that the most badass military dudes are often in their 30s anyways. Once you're at a good level of fitness, experience is way more valuable than youth.

Is there a marine equivalent of combat engineer?
>>
Does anyone have insight into how the economic background of individual soldiers affects how they perform in the military? Everyone's perception is that the military mostly attracts poor kids with no other options, but apparently that hasn't been the case since at least the 80's. It honestly seems like a shame to me, if the military is supposed to be an honest reflection of American society.

Does it come up often?
>>
>>28333488

Nowadays it tends to fall along job lines. This is why, for instance, different parts of the Army are so culturally different. Some parts of the military attract middle class kids with some college who are looking to use the military to maximum benefit and move on, while other parts tend to attract those who are trying to escape their civilian life and cling to the military as long as possible.
>>
>>28333488
One big reason for this: higher standards to join the military mean that being poor is almost a disqualifier.

Single parent? No military. Experimented with hard drugs? No military. Got a criminal record? No military. Didn't graduate high school? No military. Shit nutrition growing up caused you to get fat? No military. Already wallowing in debt? You might be able to get in but you might not be allowed to get a cleared job.

If you grew up poor and make it to age 17 without fucking up your chances to join, you're beating the odds.
>>
>>28333105
yes combat engineer is the marine equivalent of the army combat engineer
>>
>>28333488
MOS with actual job skills / civilian applications are attractive to poor people. This is why Army sustainment MOS are mostly minorities.

MOS with no job skills / no civilian job prospects are attractive to spoiled middle class white kids who have never had to worry about money or think about taking care of themselves of their family in the future. This is why combat arms MOS are primarily white.
>>
i want to get TS clearance but i don't even have 3 nonfamily members to put on application, what should i do?
>>
>>28329291
Officers don't go to A-school, instead they go directly to power school.

I hear the course is harder, and you learn a lot about all three nuclear rates. You're held to a very high standard, and every nuke officer has a face-to-face interview with the head of reactors, currently Admiral Caldwell.
