What does /k/ think/know about Green Berets?

Do you know any?
Stories?

I spoke to my local Army Recruiter and will go see him sometime next week.

Anyone know if the 18x enlistment option still a thing?

Also operator thread. Post pics, talk shit, discuss.
>>
18X is still a thing. I hear the Q-course is brutal if you don't have prior military experience, though.
>>
>>28284355
Thanks for the info. What kind of brutal?
Physical or mental?
I'm honestly most scared of the land navigation rucks to be honest. One of the few things you have to do alone and if you lose any equipment you get recycled. Sounds high stress.

I'm really drawn to how unique they are compared to other special operations forces.
Learn a new language, try to establish friendly terms with locals, training locals in guerrilla warfare, experience other cultures in an intimate manner.
Not your usual "operating".
Pretty cool stuff they get to do.

>one guy in my platoon knew from day 1 he wanted to be a Ranger officer
>first chance he got he went out for Ranger Challenge, this giant PT/FTX event to select candidates for Ranger school
>he actually gets in and is super fucking gung ho about it
>every thing he says is "Ranger this ranger that did you know I'm training to be a ranger bla bla ranger"
>platoon sergeant gets super fucking annoyed at him
>finally tells him that whenever he leaves barracks he has to sound off with "Rangers lead the way"
>every day hear him scream "Rangers lead the way" and officers laugh and heckle him
>one day hes leaving as one of our professors walks by
>professor is a retired Green Beret
>Recruit Ranger leaves the building and yells "Rangers lead the way" as usual
>professor throws him on the ground
>"Rangers don't lead the way, dumbass! Rangers drop in after the Green Berets have been there for two months!"
>roars of laughter all across the parade ground
>recruit drops out of Ranger Challenge about a week later
>find out the other candidates got so sick of him they gave him the soap-in-sock treatment
>also find out that green beret professor has hated Rangers ever since the day a Ranger killed one of his buddies in a friendly-fire incident
>he has been relentlessly fucking with Ranger candidates since his first day at the college and the administration just looks the other way

To be honest, if you're this unprepared, you're not gonna make it. I'm telling you this because if you really want to do SF, then you'll spend 3 months or so training for SFAS, and then you'll spend a good amount of time thinking if you want to go through the year long (or longer) training process.

Don't go into SFAS without knowing land navigation and without being able to score a 300 PFT EASILY. You should be able to hike with a 70lb ruck at 12 minute miles, and they'll make you do 200 miles over the 3 weeks. In addition to running. And being soaking wet and cold as fuck. And on minimal sleep. And even then, you're doing the bare minimum.
>>
>>28284373

>What kind of brutal?

From what I was told, the difficulty is that the Q-course wasn't designed to take a new guy and make him special forces material so much as it was designed to take an already experienced soldier and build on his prior knowledge. I'd imagine that means there's going to be a lot of information and new shit being thrown at you that's not going to be as daunting to the guys who've already been in the military for a while as it will be to new guys.

Thanks for the critique guys.
I'll definitely be overhauling my physical training.
I also know a good handfull of SF both active and retired. I'll see if I can start working out with one who I know is a PT freak and see if they can give me any kind of advice and pointers.

It's the most operator jobs in the Army. Of fucking course it's going to be difficult. Those courses can afford to be difficult because they are going to be highly selective. No matter what the global situation there are ALWAYS going to be lots of people who want to be Special forces. This is why I get a kick out of /MEG/ threads where people are like "Ay yo, I just finished C25K, time to try out for 18x." It's like being the best flagfootball player on your block and expecting to get drafted to the NFL.

>>28284419
Sounds like a choad. Rangers do their thing, Green Berets do the other thing. Often they overlap. Different jobs will give each other shit, but only choads take it beyond fun & games.

>>28284335
Worked with some former Green Berets/Delta who went and became DoD personnel. Basically they kept doing what they had been doing before, but without rank being an issue they were able to even further step on problematic conventional officers. Dudes completely retaught me how to use a handgun, and one of them was a turbo geek about building rifles that I'd get into long conversations with where he'd explain all kinds of finer details of building them. Funny enough, he wasn't a total snob about having da most operator rifle ever to operate with, and his setup weighed less than almost of the /k/ tripfag rifles.

i'm the owner of a small Security firm one of my employees is a former Green Beret. I officially employ him as a manager and trainer, sense he has a bunch of training dealing with people who are complete numbnuts, but he is most valuable as a vulnerability detector.

here is basically how it goes down in the industry, we do an audit on a place which is where we think places are vulnerable. write up how much it will be to fix and pitch it to the company. if the company wants to move forward, we do a "wet run" of the place. basically, our Green Beret tries to break into the place and steal abunch of shit. every single wet run he has been able to completely clean the place out of hundreds of thousands of dollars of info and merchandize. one time he stole a 3 copy machine right out from right under the noses of a paper company cause their janitors didn't have any security passes and if anyone stopped him he said he "was going to be a replacement on x floor". another time he stole 300 gigabytes of user data, files, social security information by paying off one of the IT guys. another time he stole trade secrets from one company because they kept it in an unbolted strong box in the bosses office (who wasn't there half the time) by paying a small black kid to start a diversion on one side of the building, sneak in through the window, steal the box, and walk out the front door like it was nothing.

they are slick motherfuckers, he is worth every single penny i pay him.
>>
>>28284462
I'd refrain from laughing at Rangers until you've actually made it to a position where you've done some shit.

Too many MEG posters/in-person DEP fags act like hot shit because they merely signed up for some dream job.

If you encounter a Ranger, or even a tab-Ranger in real life, you would be wise to listen and learn from them.

What's the pros and con's to hiring for former SF for Private sector work?

I don't have much of an interest in applying for SF, but I'm interested in the PT suggestions in this book. On a scale from 1 to 10, how would you rate the PT guidelines that this book outlines? I need to get back into shape for reasons, and I'm assuming that a book like this would a great guide to do PT without a gym membership.

Be aware, be SUPER aware of what that 18X might mean if you wash out of qualification. It might mean you become "needs of the Army". You might become a cook, or a water filtration specialist, or an ass hair waxer. Ask the recruiter what might happen if you dont make it through selection.

Second, selection will be the single hardest thing you will ever do, I don't give a fuck what other people say. Ive never been through it, only talked to people who didn't make it through. Their hips broke, or their feet broke, or their knees collapsed. They are broken FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES, at the age of like, 20. They can't run anymore, can't hike, or do any cool innawoods stuff, or any fitness stuff. Knew one guy, made it to NCO as commo, wanted to BE ALL HE COULD BE. Went for selection, he fucked his arm up so bad he can never lift weights again, he has like a 10 pound limit before the titanium screws keeping him together rip out. He is less that thirty, he is more fucked up physically than your "Ive fallen and I can't get up" granny.

It will be a challenge that might destroy your body, might ruin you forever.

Join the Air force. Get a nice job in a nice building filling out nice paperwork. Get some nice money, some nice vacation time. Get two nice government funded education bills, and get out. Or, dominate your little air force unit in PT and be the big PT stud in the little Airforce pond and slay Airforce slag pussy. Whatever, dont ruin yourself because something looks cool.

dont have a heart attack, hydrate as much as you can

/fit/ will just tell you to run and lift, but the military is more cardio and endurance based, not "hurr durr, bug gainz"

>How do you get contracts like that with only one specialized employee working for you?

Greenie subcontracts other workers, and he is our only full time wet runner. Employing wet runners full time is not sustainable so we contract it out to other white hat criminals depending on what our client wants (cyber security we have whitehat hackers we call up, physical security we have Greenie, logistical security we have a friend company).

Greenie's main job is security training and assistant manager, which is the only reason why i keep him around full time instead of having him on retainer.

>What's the pros and con's to hiring for former SF for Private sector work?

Pros: autonomous worker, every single SF i've worked with pretty much fire and forget, and they work till the job is done. they also work really well with other SF personal.

Cons: they don't work quite so well with Civs, he has had afew scuffles with office politics and it doesn't really get out of hand, but i got to keep on people to keep the peace. they also sometimes forget what is and isn't legal and revert back to their training, like one time he got started an officer fire in the break room of to cause a distraction, and the fire department was called. nobody suspected us but he lost his commision check for that contract.

honestly if i could i'd hire more SF personal, but they are diamonds and hard to hold onto.

On the Manhattan project, Richard Feynman reported that the safes they were using were unsafe and that he could get the combination when they were left open. Something that happened a lot, because people would take out all their paperwork to work on & leave the empty safe open.

Instead of making sure they used safes that were secure, they sent a memo saying all safes were to be kept locked even when empty.
Of course the scientists didn't give a rats ass and Richard Feynman ended up with a list of almost every safe on the base.
In the end, he even picked the base commander's -special- safe. It turned out that it was left on the default configuration as shipped from the factory if I remember correctly.

That's on the military led MANHATTAN PROJECT.
If they're that sloppy there, think about how secure most private companies are.
