Which branch are you enlisting/enlisted/considering?

Ask questions, answer questions, bitch about Air Force recruiters. Just keep it contained to this general

Let's say you're a weakling, lazy, scrawny, and just all around useless and directionless.

Can the military fix you? Is one branch better than the others at doing that?
>>
>>28279785
How do you mean?
>>
>>28279837
the military can help, but you also need the drive to want to fix yourself

navy would be my recommendation

Gotta work on that one first yourself. Nothing external can fix that problem, it can only come from within.

It'd be nice to have some of the better known trips have their qualifications(though I know a lot of you guys don't necessarily want to be verified) in the OP so when ya'll answer questions we have an idea where that knowledge is coming from.

Let's answer the question once and for all:

Enlist BEFORE or AFTER college?

>>
>>28280029
Enlisting after college just meant I had more medical hoops to jump through. Broke a lot of small bones in those four years.
>>

Im biology psych double major, "focus" in neuroscience.

Im not tryna be an officer though, Is there a program for enlisted? I just dont want to get stuck with more than 4 yrs commitment cause I want to go to med school, but dont quite have the grades right now.
>>
>>28279980
HPSP is easily the best if you can handle becoming a doctor.

The only bad part is the summer training is sort of stupid, but the bonus was nice in 2003 (no idea if it is now).
>>
>>28280204
can i do that hpsp shit once im in as an officer
like lateral transfer to that
>>
>>28279937
Oh I see, as far as I know the only trips that post here are me and occasionally Ranger Ricky. So I don't think there would be much to put down.

>>28280009
It's definitely going to suck, but you probably won't be the worst person there if that helps. Where are you going for basic?
>>
>>28280228
Yes, you can go to medical school under the HPSP or another program that I forget once you are in, but HPSP dose commit you to being a army or navy doctor for a while. That's fine though, as you are legally untouchable and when you figure in insurance and shit you make as much money in the Navy as you do in the first years of private practice.

I bet you're a trump supporter too, you fucking bigot. grow up.
>>
>>28280645
No, I made it through MEPs with stretch marks (lost a shit ton of weight before though). The only way you may get disqualified if some mongoloid government contract shitlord gets a wild hair up their ass that the scars may be from you cutting yourself.

Also, just generally be aware that all MEPs employees are complete and total assholes for absolutely no reason. Seriously, not even the admin people during reception were as terrible. It's like the legitimately hate themselves more than they want to have a job

>>28280755
MEPs was worse than reception and basic for me, if only because those assholes knew they could make or break your military career and they acted like it.

>>28280751
Shit dude, 15 minute three mile is awesome. If you can do it without wrecking your body before you leave, do it. You can only help yourself if you get serious about running. I never ran more than a 9 minute mile in highschool, and I got my time down to a 14 minute 2-mile on my final test
>>
>>28280783
So once you get disqualified at MEP's it's game over for life or how does that system work?
>>
>>28280783

I could always get sub 5 min miles, and that was before I started really trimming down recently. I practice 3.2 miles as though it were 3 miles, my goal is to push down from ~16 mins to 15. I figure if I max that out, max out ASVAB, and max out push-ups it will help me work past a weak but passing swim score.
>>
>>28280810
There are things that get you DQ'd for life and things that will make you wait a certain time until it clears up or for you to come back with a doctors signature saying the condition won't effect you in a negative way during your training and military career. There was a dude I was in MEPS with, super cool, 98 ASVAB scores, was gonna be a medic. Got DQ'd for life for having scars all over his forearms that they said were suicide attempts and he said they were from working construction. Shit happens

>>28280834
Your ASVAB (outside of your GT score for specialist trainging) will not affect a single thing after you pick your MOS. If your PT scores will prevent you from getting your MOS of choice, work on your weak points over your strong points.
>>
>>28280856

My ASVAB is solid.
>>
>>28280867
ASVAB has nothing to do with your training. Get your swim up if you're at all in trouble of getting sent home for it.
>>
I have been summoned?

>>28280324
Yes, I am right. Avoid security forces, unless you don't care about receiving meaningful training that can get you into a decent job, let alone any job on the outside, and you only want to PRETEND to do cool things.

>>28280401
Somewhat true, we also get a taste of the fuck fuck games and being treated like a child in a way not experienced by the rest of the air force, without the added benefit of actually being something cool.

a bit. if anyone notices, have a good prepared lie, like "oh I was attacked by a huge cat when I was like 7, and it left scars on my arm." how many are there? how deep were the cuts? make your cover story believable. military doesn't like the idea of taking in people with a history of mental health issues, even if it was just "I cut myself once and didn't like it."

what, you don't think that in our currently rising sjw "muh feelings" culture that being open about hating a specific demographic will be looked down upon and vocalizing your narrow-minded dogmatism won't be punished? you think suddenly it will become acceptable to discriminate against a select group of people simply because you're uncomfortable with the idea of people having a brain that functions differently than yours? I can't imagine how fulfilling of a life you must lead with a mind that runs in reverse and is incapable of allowing its host to realize when it's wrong. like I said before, have fun in the 21st century.

All the lifts that guy listed are good, and he's right that those should be your main workouts. Also work the shit out of your core, do a lot of situps, planks, side planks, leg raises, etc., 8-count bodybuilders are pretty good for a general calisthenic exercise as well. I would suggest adding some tricep pushdowns and reverse curls to your routine, and make sure you SQUEEZE THE SHIT out of the bar when you lift. That will help build your triceps, for pushups, and the back of your wrist and forearm/bicep for grip, respectively, and because there's no reason not to do a few curls while you're at it since normies won't think you're /fit/ unless you have big arms.

Also, some anon asked for me in the last thread about whether running would help his gains, but I didn't see it before it archived.

Running will definitely help your gains, because it makes you more efficient in the gym and the higher endurance you develop lets you lift heavier weights for longer, as well as reducing your recovery time. Running being bad for gains is just a /fit/ meme, it's pretty much the best thing you can do. If you were to choose just running or just lifting, just running would be easily superior.
>>
>>28283357

I'm kind of at a loss right now with my life. About to turn 28, and my business I started years ago is about to be shuttered early next year. I have a useless film degree from a tech school but I'm very fit. I've lifted for years and decent cardio from gym and club rugby.

What are some good resources to look at my military options since I would be enlisting in my late 20s, with a high school diploma. Like I said I'm very fit and strong. The only valuable knowledge I have outside of my previous work (online sales) is automotive. Worked in service and have restored and built a couple cars. I'm just in a shitty place, especially trying to keep it together during the holidays knowing what's inevitable and trying to find out what would be available for me in the military.

I've got 6 weeks of bct left when leave is over, then ait obviously. I know my pay grade (e3 kek) but is there any chance of getting more money for going somewhere "dangerous?"

I know one girl who left her unit in the guard to go somewhere in trashcanistan and she was mouthing off about 150k (+hazard pay?) for her deployment, no taxes. I'm not a medic like her, but everyone says they need mechanics (91bH8) fucking everywhere. What are my options to get that money?
>>
>>28280867

if you're gonna be a STO, you need to take the AFOQT. also you basically talk to the community, they decide that you'd be a good fit and addition to the community, then they give you an OTS slot. works a bit different from the usual rated board/nonrated board OTS system.
>>
>>28284776
They don't care about the language really, as long as you can pass the ASVAB they figure it's good enough.

For me, if I were enlisting at that age, I'd need some real motivation. Really real motivation, you know? It sounds like you're in a rut. Being in a rut isn't a good reason to make such a big commitment, and yes, it is a huge commitment. There's a reason the uniformed services make up only 1% of the population.

If you enlisted the way you are now, you'd be a fuzzy private, you'd be disillusioned by week 2 of basic because your platoon guide will be a decade younger than you, then your squad leader will be even younger, you probably won't stick out as a PT stud or excellent shooter, so there's no satisfaction there, you're going to be hard to train (no offense) because you're fully developed but have no military bearing (jrotc/rotc) and are you ready to get 50 dudes smoked because you forgot to curl your fingers while marching?

Add to that, you're joining because life sucks where you're at, so where's the motivation to continue? Either way, life sucks a lot more when you're in bct, and doesn't really get better when you're in permanent party.

Hella fun in ait though, fuck I wish it was longer.

Just think about it though.

Was she an officer? (more pay) Was she married? (sep pay) Was she a flying medic? As for the proper joining criteria, which I likely have around 9 months to a year to prepare for:

Day One
>level 13 20 metre bleep test
>60 press ups in two minutes
>85 situps in two minutes
>16 pull ups
Day Two
>Tarzan Assault Course
>"timed run" around course (couldn't find any real details on these)

Day Three

Try the programs onehundredpushups and twohundredsitups for your pushup/situp counts, they seem reasonably effective to me. You can supplement with bench press, chest flies, leg raises, planks, etc. for variety and to develop all the muscles. Tricep pushdowns can help if you struggle with bench or pushup count, most people have a stronger chest than triceps. Once you get stronger dips are good as well. For pullups try rows of any kind if you're not yet strong enough to do pullups, and lat pulldowns are exactly the same motion. Try C25k+B210k, pic related, for running. Once you finish c25k you can add intervals for speed work.
>>
>>28286003
Also, you need to be working out at least 3 times a week to see much progress, and you can easily do every other day if you still with bodyweight/calisthenic exercises. Try maybe doing your workouts for pushups, pullups and situps on the same day, followed by a moderate run, and on rest days do a full cardio workout.

i've done them. they're shit. nsw program is probably better for that guy. either that or a good iron man/triathlon program. he would have limited use for weights and unless they're weightlifters or powerlifters, pro-athletes usually reserve heavy lifting for the off season (if at all) and the rest of the time it's maintenance or rehab/prehab. the sport takes priority and you only have limited recovery time.

why the fuck you're recommending chest flies to a mil candidate i have no idea.

>lat pulldowns are exactly the same motion.

they're not. especially how they're usually performed in a gym.

http://main.poliquingroup.com/ArticlesMultimedia/Articles/Article/1161/Why_You_Must_Do_Chin-Ups.aspx
>>
>>28286441
Chest flies and tricep pushdowns isolate the chest and triceps, the two main groups used in pushups, to help you get better faster. If you do only pushups/bench you may be held back by overworking your triceps/chest and underworking the other if one group is stronger than the other (and in most people, the chest is much stronger). Sure, the way a lot of people do them, lat pulldowns aren't the same, but with good form and the correct handle it is the exact same motion as a wide-grip pullup.
>>
>>28286441
>>28286488
Also, it sounds like the guy isn't in great shape right now, and the NSW program will probably start off too hard for him to get much out of it yet. I do agree that it is an excellent program, though.

>>

>Chest flies and tricep pushdowns isolate the chest and triceps, the two main groups used in pushups, to help you get better faster.

you mean they train muscles in isolation that are required to work in co-ordination with other muscle groups. this is the single worst idea for anyone who is not a body builder. de-coordinating, which is what you're doing, is a great way to get injured, especially because as a royal marine he will not have the option of backing off or taking it easy, and he will be worked for hours with no rest. so issues will only get exacerbated. so unless you're a body builder in which case it doesn't matter. or you're a powerlifter and you need to bring up the strength in a particular lagging muscle group that you've identified by say, failing the lockout (not likely with a naval service press up), which is only used in a strict range of motion which you are then replicating as closely as possible.

>you may be held back by overworking your triceps/chest

if you're held back by overworking your triceps then why exactly would you then do more work for your triceps in the form of tricep pushdowns.

>lat pulldowns aren't the same, but with good form and the correct handle it is the exact same motion as a wide-grip pullup.

if they're not the same, how can they then be the same? and it's not, not in the least because the body position of a dead hang changes the forces on the shoulder joint dynamically through the range of motion. hence the link i posted.

sorrry m8, mil, especially for units like the royals, isn't really gym. weights have limited utility for what this guy wants to do, and isolation exercises even less so. unless he's rehab/prehabbing an injury, his recovery time is best invested elsewhere

>>28286508
the nsw program is scaled to your current performance based on how you test, and includes back-off and substitution options for periods where you're highly fatigued. it's a good start for all levels short of morbidly obese.

I never said for him to exclusively use pushdowns/flies in place of pushups, I said that they were good supplements. And if you're overworking your triceps on bench, obviously you're not going to just add more triceps work on top with no change, you fucking mong. You're going to reduce the amount of time you spend on bench and do some accessories for a couple weeks to help the imbalance. And then you jump right into "the military won't let him rest, so why should he rest?" The military is far from flawless, especially with their exercise programs. That same logic is the stuff that convinces people on /k/ that it's a good idea to go out and explode their knees by doing 40 pound ruck runs when they can hardly even run a mile.

Maybe I have weird form, but in my experience the motion for a lat pulldown and a wide grip pullup feels exactly the same in my back/shoulders. I'll admit that that's pretty anecdotal.

I never told him "lift heavy and GOMAD!" I told him to focus primarily on pushups, pullups, core work, and running. All of the lifts I suggested were for if he has shortcomings or difficulties making progress, but you're jumping to attack the supplements I suggested when he won't even be doing most of them, or often, and none of them if he's lucky.

>>28287971
>you fucking mong.

really now. gloves are off are they?

>And if you're overworking your triceps on bench, obviously you're not going to just add more triceps work on top with no change

how exactly is a rank beginner going to know that he is even over working his triceps on the bench press. i doubt you would even be able to pick it if you were. because you sure as hell don't sound like you have a clue.

>>28286488
>Chest flies and tricep pushdowns isolate the chest and triceps, the two main groups used in pushups, to help you get better faster. If you do only pushups/bench you may be held back by overworking your triceps/chest and underworking the other if one group is stronger than the other (and in most people, the chest is much stronger).

the carry over of chest flys into the bench or major pressing exercises is precisely fuck all. it's use is to rehab/prehap the pecs and anterior deltoid for powerlifters (low weight, straight arm, high reps to stretch under load) or to pump for bodybuilders. isolating the triceps is only of value is you're a powerlifting blowing the lockout. this guy is a royal marine candidate, he'd be better served switching out to dips if he's plateaued on press ups, or simply varying his hand postions. which is incidentally advised in the nsw program you've never read.

>And then you jump right into "the military won't let him rest, so why should he rest?"

yes, you stupid cunt. because it demonstrates that instead of posturing in front of a mirror like a faggot he needs to build endurance and work capacity to a very high level. are you that fucking stupid. it doesn't matter if the military is imperfect, because they are the keyholders, and the royal marines will actually fail people out if they don't meet the standard. it's not the us army and it's not the queens own bumfuck rifles.

>That same logic is the stuff that convinces people on /k/ that it's a good idea to go out and explode their knees by doing 40 pound ruck runs when they can hardly even run a mile.

that is not at all the 'logic' here. my advise has been to train to the demands that will be imposed, what the bulgarians called specific adaptation to imposed demands (SAID). specifically the imposed demand will be a VERY HIGH WORKRATE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, BECAUSE HE WILL BE COMMANDO ROLE NOT FUCKING AROUND IN THE MARGINS. i have never advised him to over-extend himself when he is not ready, so you can take that strawman and fuck yourself up the ass with it. you're the guy who is actually sending him off on a fucking tangent and setting him up to fail.

He was actually 25, they got his age wrong in American Sniper.

Still older than most of the people here though. And 28 isn't that far off.
>>
>>28288951

24* sorry, not 25

I am senpai. What have you been doing to prepare for selection? What MOS are you shooting for?
>>

>retard
Hey I'm joining as an officer, I just also happen to have a massive rape fetish.
>>
How many people go in with an 18X or Option 40 contract, wash out of Special Forces Selection/RASP and spend the rest of their enlistment as bitter and resentful 11Bs?
>>
>>28288951
>tfw saw that and had hope I could do something with myself if I didn't get to where I want to be
>realise they got it wrong and he's only a couple of years older than i am now when he joined

ffs
>>
>>28289442
all of them.
>>
>>28289442
the contract like that within the australian defence force has a washout out of 90%+
>>
>>28288345
nowhere

>>28289442
Most of them. The 82nd Airborne is literally solely comprised of bitter washouts who only passed jump school.
>>
>>28288536
not that guy, but there really is a difference between endurance training and not letting yourself recover
>>
>>28288896
Requirements wee pretty simple. Top secret security clearance (almost a joke), 20 years or older, ASVAB GT 107 or higher (got a 141), and passing some extra bs at MEPS. My recruiter had to call in to make my contract available, but otherwise it's not so hard to get. I ship late March to Benning.
>>
>>28289492
What are your physical stats? APFT, lifts etc
>>
>>28289004
My man! Where you from and when are you shipping breh? I've been doing Push-ups, Pull-ups, Sit-ups, and squats every other day. I run five times a week 3-5 miles depending on the day. I also hit a heavy bag and do hill sprints twice a week. What's your prep been like?
>>
>>28289490
never said there wasn't.
>>
>>28289521
My scores aren't a perfect 300 yet, unfortunately.
Push-ups: 63
Sit-ups: 92
2-mile: 13:20
I do some extra lifting and cardio, too
Pull-ups: 16
Squat 5-rep max: 245
I also climb a 25 ft Manila rope.

>>28288430
He will know his triceps are being overworked because his arms are much more tired than his chest and he is making poor progress.

And again, even though I only suggested chest flies as a potential supplement, you continue to act like I recommended he make that his only chest exercise. I did, in fact, recommend that he also do dips.

Maybe I misinterpreted you, but it really sounded like you are suggesting that rest is just a show of weakness. You will progress so much faster if you allow correct recovery time, instead of going "oh well army guys ruck 10 miles, so even though I haven't built up to 10 miles yet, I'm going to do it too." Endurance training is definitely the most important area for military fitness, but endurance training != wearing yourself out every day and making zero progress because you think it's what you're supposed to do.

I was very lazy typing out my reply to that guy's post because I had to ask him like 3 times to get all the information I needed, and you have shown me that I should have worded my reply more clearly. I typed it out from the standpoint that he/you could just intuit things that I already know. I will explain myself more thoroughly in the future.

I ship out February-ish, and pretty much same workouts as high school track and combined with lifting.

Trying to get my 5K back under 18 minutes and my pushups/situps above 60 by the time I ship out. It's like 18:20 now so it's pissing me off.

Doing a lot of rucking too, got a surplus backpack that I fill with cinderblocks and waterjugs. There's a sand-forest near me that's like a Fort Bragg simulator so it's a sick workout.

When's your ship date? It'd be cool/horrifying to go through the pipeline with a /k/ommando.
>>
>>28284089

Similar. 13DXB.
>>
>>28288422
>Wanting a 68W+op40 contract
>If I went to a recruiter tomorrow with a 10 minute mile, 30 pushups, 35 situps would I be able to max APFT by the time I finished DEPS+BCT+AIT?
Fuck it, I'm just gonna go to a recruiter tomorrow.
>>
>>28289692
Damn, I'm a little jealous of the rucking simulator. I'm not a tried and true /k/ommando, but you won't have to going through the pipeline with me. My ship date isn't until late March. I helped my stalling on running by utilizing some nice, hilly trails that are near my town. Best of luck to you, man. We'll both need a little before selection is over.

What should I do if I want to get to selection?

I'm an airborne pog in an SF Group, when I usually ask the team guys they just say ruck/get used to having a ruck on your back. Anything else I can do?

I usually just workout a lot and do a shit ton of cardio. Since we don't do PRT.

Also what's the best ruck to use during training? I have an Alice pack/Multi cam ruck/ and a high speed Spear bag.
>>
>>28289575
damn playa, step your game up. i'm in the AF and am an officer who's not quite as trim as he used to be, and i do more pushups in one minute than you do in 2.

also my historic 1 rep squat max is 315 (though it's probably a bit more, did it at the end of a workout and i had gas for another rep)
>>
>>28289692
what 18 series job interests you the most?

I like 18F or 18C.
>>
>>28289807
Congratulations? It's definitely a work in progress for me. I have three more months to get where I need to be and I'm training as well as I can.

Just heard the news and am starting to rethink joining, because if I didn't hate females interfering before, then I loathe them now for what they are about to do now: neuter the Armed Forces with 'muh special needs crap'. This is the worst thing political-correctness has done yet, and I don't want my job or my life put in jeopardy because of these cunts. All they have to do now is spout bullshit if they want you on their shit list about you raping them, and they get their way. In the field they will make life harder than it needs to be because they bleed, and most aren't strong. My fucking god this is a travesty. I will not placate to these bitches. FUCK THE POLITICALLY CORRECT!!!
>>

Best advice is to follow whatever they say.

A bunch of neckbeards and teenagers on a Malaysian Basket Weaving Forum ain't gonna help much
>>
>>28289820

18D for sure. It's a year of extra training but he payoff is you're like halfway to being a physician's assistant credits wise. Take some online classes and bam, you're Ex-SF, highly trained with at least 3 years in trauma medicine, not to mention your clearance. Makes you a real promising candidate in pretty much any job interview.

Also rest of the family if was Army Medical Corps during WW2 and Vietnam so it's in my blood.
>>
>>28289941
Wow a fucking depper that understands already.
>>
>>28290020
Same man. Granddad was an Army medic back in WWII and jumped into Normandy.

I got my 68w/Opt40 because I gotta continue that shit despite my dad not enlisting.

I heard from a former Ranger that since you have a skill set of a PA, might as well use your GI bill after the service to go to civilian PA school and make bank.
>>
>>28289762
use whatever ruck you're going to use on selection. you'll probably be issued one so find out what it is and use that.

maybe take up tramping

learn to swim. it's good and if you don't feel like running then you can still get shit done.

and what the other guy said, talk to them about what they did to get in.
>>
>>28289941
You are literally never going to be in a life threatening situation unless you drive back to the base drunk.
>>
>>28290059

Hell you might as well use tuition assistance while you're still active to get your full Bachelors and use the G.I. Bill to go for your Masters in something else like Anesthesiology or something.

Instead of spending that 4 years post-Army in school you'll be able to jump right into your career.

>He will know his triceps are being overworked because his arms are much more tired than his chest and he is making poor progress.

or maybe he's actually weaker in the triceps and needs to give them more attention? maybe he's dropping the lift on the lockout and also needs a new shirt as well? conjugate training is really only useful if you'e putting up numbers. does he need to do any of this? i'm sorry he doesn't. it's not productive, especially if he can only do low double digit pressups.

>And again, even though I only suggested chest flies as a potential supplement, you continue to act like I recommended he make that his only chest exercise. I did, in fact, recommend that he also do dips.

why you would reccomend them to anyone other than a bodybuilder or the injured is what i am getting at.

>you will progress so much faster if you allow correct recovery time

well that's disingenious, never did i say that he should not allow appropriate recovery time. what i said was not to waste recovery time on superfluous bullshit like chest flies and faggotry. do you not realize that when you're talking about recovery time, you're actually talking about the exercises you are having to recover from? i think perhaps you don't.

>but endurance training != wearing yourself out every day and making zero progress because you think it's what you're supposed to do.

when did i say it was. but i don't think you actually comprehend the level of endurance required to get through something like commando course. you can't start at zero and expect to do the 30 miler (never said you could), but the prelim test alone (before you even get in) is back to back 1.5 mile runs. and that's the easiest part of the whole course. the entry requirements are similar to royal navy mine clearance divers, and i've talked to guys that simply recommend daily 10k runs. you don't get to stop and rest on these courses, which i don't think gym guys comprehend.
