I've used mine for replacing shoestrings, replacing a weapon sling, building shelter, building hidden observation posts, tying up fenders on boats, etc etc. Everything you'd need a piece of rope for. I prefer synthetic ropes to natural ones because they won't rot. But why paracord instead of other synthetic ropes? No real reason. It's strong and comes in matte colours.

It's good for miscellaneous random uses. In most applications, there's something better that you should have instead. But if a need comes up, you won't have that cord, and paracord is usually good enough.
Paracord is the best generic rope. It has flaws but comes in handy in so many situations that it's good to have with you. At least until they invent something better.

You can. You just have to braid it into a thicker rope first.
I use it as a filler when installing aircraft windows. if you put enough 550 cord in the gap then you don't have to use 3 tubes of sealant per window, and it makes it a hell of a lot easier to get all the sealant out if you have to replace the window again. just dig down enough to find the cord and pull.
